Plant Health Clinic 2013 Summary Report

The Plant Health Clinic has received 2934 plant samples in 2013. Numbers were 17.6% below the previous year, due to a decrease in turf samples. Turf samples had spiked to an all time high in 2012 due to some training classes given by Extension to professional turf people. The largest number of samples in 2013 was for the category Trees/shrubs (31.3%), followed by Turf (20.4%), Vegetables (19.7%), Fruit/Nut (13.5%), Perennials (6.1%), Field Crops (5.1%), Annuals (2.0%), Other (0.8%), Weed (0.4%), Unknown (0.4%), Forage (0.3%). Note that Unknown are samples, either plant or insect that come into the lab to be identified. The Other category is comprised of samples, usually of ambiguous material that neither the grower or county agent can identify.

The Plant Health Clinic significantly impacts both Arkansas growers and Extension personnel through our diagnostic services, training sessions, and public outreach. The Clinic serves as a valuable aid to county agents in solving problems connected with Extension clients and shareholders. The Clinic partners with the Southern Plant Diagnostic Network, the National Plant Diagnostic Network, and the Arkansas State Plant Board to alert and train shareholders about developing threats to the agricultural and horticultural industries. Additionally, thousands of homeowners are benefitted through our diagnostic services, and one-to-one personal attention to their problems.
