TUESDAY, MARCH 31, 2020 HARDBOOT VALUES HAVE PARX TRAINERS TRYING TO HANG IN THERE DURING SHUTDOWN by Bill Finley LASTING IMPRINT Turn the calendar back to February and Joe Taylor could not have been doing better. He had been the leading trainer at Parx THROUGH NUCKOLS Racing in 2019 and was again on top of the standings in 2020. Racing for lucrative, slots-infused purses, he won 107 races last year at Parx for earnings of $3,160,143. Now, he=s just trying to stay in business. AMy hope is that I can get myself into a situation where I=m just treading water, not making or losing money and can pay my bills,@ he said. AIf this thing goes on another two months, I have no idea what the answer will be. It=s a scary situation.@ Taylor last started a horse at Parx Mar. 10. That was the last day the track held racing, shutting down afterwards because of the coronavirus threat. Parx was among the first tracks to close down and, three weeks later and with the resumption of racing nowhere in sight, trainers are trying to figure out how to ride out the storm. A longshot 6 3/4-length winner on debut going seven furlongs at Meydan on Dec. 17, Mnasek had to settle for second, seven lengths behind Saturday=s Saudi Derby contender Soft Whisper (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}), after missing the break in the Listed UAE 1000 Guineas up to a mile on Jan. 28. Away much more smoothly up to 1900 metres on Thursday, Mnasek broke on top from the rail but soon dropped back to allow Jumeirah Beach (Ire) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) to take up the running. Fourth and about three lengths off the lead rounding the first bend, jockey Pat Dobbs made a deliberate move to put the filly on the outside midway down the backstretch and she was poised ominously four-wide rounding Summer Romance | DRC/Erika Rasmussen the bend. Shooting to the lead as they straightened, Mnasek By Kelsey Riley drew clear effortlessly to crush her overmatched opposition by Summer Romance (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) was named a >TDN 6 1/2 lengths. Nayefah (Super Saver) made eye-catching Rising Star= on debut when winning a Yarmouth maiden by two headway late to be second, while Last Sunset (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) lengths in June of 2019, and she followed that effort up was third.

  • Precisionist Gulch Prized Black Tie Affair Fraise Eldaafer Amazombie
Precisionist Fraise Gulch Eldaafer Prized Amazombie Black Tie Affair And many more... Official 2015 Old Friends Breeders’ Cup Program Welcome In 1984, under a sunnier sky than anything the Beach Boys ever evoked, I was at Hollywood Park waiting for the gates to spring open revealing the greatest idea in the history of horse racing—the Breeders' Cup. For the uninitiated, the Breeders' Cup is like the World Series, NHL and NBA all in one day. And you might as well toss in the Super Bowl. Over the years, I've attended a dozen Breeders' Cups. I saw Precisionist win the 1985 Sprint at Aqueduct, and Fraise nip Sky Classic in the 1992 Turf at Gulfstream Park, and Black Tie Affair’s dominating victory in the 1991 Classic at Churchill Downs. Now, they are all buried at Old Friends. And, while their exhilarating athleticism in front of a grandstand exploding with screaming fans still gets my heart pumping, it's their last days, with just a handful of us, that I remember the most. They all showed the same intelligence, grace and courage at the end as they did at the beginning. As we await the 31st running of the Breeders' Cup at Keeneland, I can walk around the farm and feed carrots to Sprint winners Gulch (1988) (he needs his shredded) and Amazombie (2011), and Marathoner Eldaafer (2010), and dozens of others who participated, including Silver Charm, Hidden Lake, Affirmed Success, Tinners Way and Game on Dude. I'm even more thrilled now than I was then. Proof, once again, of the eternal value of the Thoroughbred.

  • 2018 Northern California Yearling & Horses of Racing Age Sale
2018 NORTHERN CALIFORNIA YEARLING & HORSES OF RACING AGE SALE Tuesday, August 14, 12:00 Noon Alameda County Fairgrounds, Pleasanton, CA ©Benoit Calif. Incentive Program_Cat CALIFORNIA’S INCENTIVE PROGRAM IT PAYS TO BREED AND OWN A CALIFORNIA-BRED In 2017, the breeders and owners of California-bred Thoroughbreds and the owners of California-based stallions received over $12M in premiums through the California Incentive Program. In addition, special racing opportunities afforded California-breds in 2017, provided more than $20M in purses for races restricted to California-breds. As a result of legislation recently amended in 2009, total monies available for incentive awards are distributed as follows: 10% to the California-bred race fund; 15% to the Maiden Bonus program: 20% bonus on the winner’s share to the owner of a California-bred Thoroughbred horse conceived by a registered eligible Thoroughbred stallion that finishes first in an open qualifying race, and a 10% bonus on the winner’s share to the owner of a California-bred Thoroughbred horse that finishes first in an open qualifying race that was not conceived by a registered eligible Thoroughbred stallion. The tracks are adding an additional 10% for Cal-bred winners of allowance races making the bonus 30%. A qualifying race is all non-claiming races excluding stakes with a purse of at least $15,000, as are open non maiden claiming races with a claiming price of $40,000 or greater in Southern California and $20,000 or greater in Northern California. After these deductions, 75% of the remainder to be paid as breeder awards, and 25% of the fund to be paid as stallion awards.
