He attended Abilene High and then went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in religion and music from George Pepperdine College in Los Angeles. Coffman graduated in 1944. While he was there he met and became friends with M. Norvel Young. While there he met and married Dott Forsythe in 1943. He worked for five different congregations throughout Southern California for seven years. In 1946 M. Norvel Young, who was now the Preaching Minister for the Broadway Church of Christ in Lubbock, Texas, wrote Coffman asking if he would be interested in the Associate Minister position there at the Broadway Church. Coffman accepted and he and Dott moved to Lubbock in October of 1946. During his work at Broadway Coffman served under many different ministers. M. Norvel Young, Bill Banowsky, and Joe Barnett are only a few of the preachers and evangelists he assisted with the work in Lubbock. Horace was involved in all phases of the work at Broadway including counseling, personal work, visitation, benevolent case studies, Bible school teaching, funerals, weddings, and all music activities. The wedding chorus he organized in 1947 sang for over 60 weddings a year and about 70 funerals a year. He led many singing schools throughout Texas and other states at various churches and taught at every Lubbock Christian College music camp since its inception in 1957. He also appeared as a speaker at various lectureships and gospel meetings. Coffman’s legacy at Broadway is one of a healer. The innumerable lives he touched and counseled through times of grief and pain as well as joy and life are a testimony to his work both in the church and in the city of Lubbock. He and Dott had three daughters and one son. They served the Broadway church until 1999, a total of 53 years of continuous service at one Church of Christ. This is the longest known relationship of a single minister with the same church in the Church of Christ fellowship. 1 Late in life Horace was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. He suffered with it for several years before finally passing away on December 8th. 2006. Joe Barnett performed the funeral Coffman is buried in Resthaven Cemetery in Lubbock, TX. Series IX, PRINTED MATERIAL, contains books, periodicals, bulletins, tracts, programs, awards, certificates, pamphlets, brochures, clippings, songbooks, song sheets, church directories, LCU and ACU materials and Broadway ministry material. • Great Instrumental
I grew up during the heyday of pop instrumental music in the 1950s and the 1960s (there were 30 instrumental hits in the Top 40 in 1961), and I would listen to the radio faithfully for the 30 seconds before the hourly news when they would play instrumentals (however the first 45’s I bought were vocals: Bimbo by Jim Reeves in 1954, The Ballad of Davy Crockett with the flip side Farewell by Fess Parker in 1955, and Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford in 1956). I also listened to my Dad’s 78s, and my favorite song of those was Raymond Scott’s Powerhouse from 1937 (which was often heard in Warner Bros. cartoons). and to records that my friends had, and that their parents had - artists such as: (This is not meant to be a complete or definitive list of the music of these artists, or a definitive list of instrumental artists – rather it is just a list of many of the instrumental songs I heard and loved when I was growing up - therefore this list just goes up to the early 1970s): Floyd Cramer (Last Date and On the Rebound and Let’s Go and Hot Pepper and Flip Flop & Bob and The First Hurt and Fancy Pants and Shrum and All Keyed Up and San Antonio Rose and [These Are] The Young Years and What’d I Say and Java and How High the Moon), The Ventures (Walk Don't Run and Walk Don’t Run ‘64 and Perfidia and Ram-Bunk-Shush and Diamond Head and The Cruel Sea and Hawaii Five-O and Oh Pretty Woman and Go and Pedal Pusher and Tall Cool One and Slaughter on Tenth Avenue), Booker T.

Film Score Blogs [Blog # 45] Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at 5:48 pm Max Steiner’s Since You Went Away (1944) is now available thru SAE: http://www.screenarchives.com/title_detail.cfm/ID/17580/SINCE-YOU-WENT-AWAY- 2CD/ This is a 2-cd set for $24.95. It is likely I will decide to also purchase this item once Tribute finally releases The Adventures of Don Juan/Arsenic & Old Lace. Quite frankly I am at the moment too aware of the nature of the music in SYWA. I know I was not too enthusiastic about that movie. And generally speaking I prefer the latter era of Max Steiner output from the late Forties to retirement in the Mid Sixties…..[7:15 pm]: Did a few chores and had dinner…. SYWA sounds (from the clips available online) a bit sweet syrupy, which is not uncommon for early and some mid-Max. Some is fine but too much is a bit much! So there is an element of “sweet nothings” here in this total score. So far it is not particularly distinctive and grabbing. It’s basically “light stuff.” In the first half of the Forties my favorite Steiner score is Desperate Journey perhaps (and a fine, entertaining war movie). They Died With Their Boots On had some very fine moments (I researched the written score but never had the chance yet to do Desperate Journey). Now, Voyager and of course Casablanca are excellent scores. If you include 1945 then San Antonio was really fun, and I also liked Saratoga Trunk.
