Role

Characters fill roles within a story. They can play a major role as a central element to the story or play a supporting role. Below is a description of common types of characters.

 Protagonist – the main character. The plot revolves around him or her. The protagonist is often the hero of the story.

 Antagonist – the character who opposes the protagonist. He/she is often the villain. In some stories, the antagonist is not a person, but a force of nature, an animal, etc.

 Major – the main characters who dominate the story. They are involved in the major plot events and help shape the story.

 Minor – the characters who help tell the major character’s tale. They interact with major characters to revealing their personalities, situations, stories. They are usually static (unchanging).

 Static/Flat – a character who is unchanged throughout the story. Their personality and nature are consistent. Although they may experience physical changes, there is no internal transformation.

 Dynamic/Round – a character with depth who experiences internal change or growth. Their transformation is often a response to events or other characters. The transformation may not always dramatic or physical.
