ANNUAL REPORT 2018 25 YEARS

Dear Friend,

2019 will mark Bethany Hill Place’s 25th year of providing safety and opportunity for hundreds of individuals—adults and children alike. This report celebrates and commemorates our beginnings in the early 90’s and the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston’s courageous step 2017/2018 into a new realm, providing housing and education to those most in need. Board of Trustees Capturing some important moments in time, we hope to offer you proof of our success and also exemplify the durability of the CSJ charism that guides our Tiffany A. O’Connell, Chair programming and community strength—both hallmarks of Bethany Hill Place. Peggy Cross, Vice Chair Even in Bethany Hill Place’s earliest days, the Sisters knew it would be Leslie A. Bishop, Secretary/Clerk important to widen the circle and involve others in this unique mission. They enlisted many lay leaders to partner with them and carry their dream forward. Daniel Barnard Over a quarter century span, nearly 100 dedicated Board members have Mark Chistolini answered the CSJ request and risen to the occasion, offering their passion and commitment, innumerable volunteer hours, professional expertise and Laura Elkayam financial support to ‘care for the dear neighbor without distinction.’ We are Brenda Forry, CSJ very grateful to these dedicated individuals! Rebecca Gallo Kathleen Hagerty, CSJ A special group of past Board Chairs has maintained an extraordinary Lorretta Holloway connection with Bethany Hill Place. Nicknamed the ‘Justice League,’ this Judith Javidpour group of former and current chairs continues to gather periodically to share Barbara Loud, CSJ the impact Bethany Hill Place had on them and to watch over Bethany Hill Place, offering guidance, connections, and advice for the organization’s long Marie Therese Martin, CSJ term sustainability. With the idea of reducing reliance on the Congregation, Joan McNamara the Justice League recently established the Leadership Fund, a fund of Courtney O’Regan major gifts intended to secure the long term needs of Bethany Hill Place. Peggy Sullivan, CSJ Five former Board Chairs—Donna Gallo, Catherine Mesner, Paul Connolly, Donna Hale, Marianne McLaughlin—and current Chair Tiffany O’Connell have ‘seeded’ the Leadership Fund with more than $70K, above and beyond their annual and Gala giving.

Everyone reading this is an important part of the Bethany Hill Place community. Please join us this year in celebrating the beginning of our 2nd quarter century! Save the evening of Thursday May 2nd 2019 for a special event at the Historic Village Hall in Framingham to recognize this important milestone and laud those who paved the way for resident accomplishments and Bethany Hill Place’s success.

Together, we are ready for the next 25!

Tiffany A. O’Connell Trish Appert Board Chair Executive Director

ANNUAL REPORT 2018 · 2 1994-2019

While he was serving time in prison, Angel’s sponsors sought to help him navigate his reentry into society. Growing up in what Angel describes as a tough environment in Puerto Rico, he at first didn’t know what to make of their encouragement: ‘you can do it – its up to you. Make a plan and stick to it’. They also urged him to apply for housing at Bethany Hill Place. He followed their advice, and came to live in one of our studio apartments soon after his release from prison in 2011.

“You arrive there with no hope. But if you take advantage of their resources and can accept the support, you can move on with your life.” He worked diligently to earn and save money, and the community at Bethany Hill Place helped him to be less isolated, breaking down the insecurity learned in prison. Within three years, he was ready to move on from Bethany Hill Place.

Four years later, Angel is married and he owns a thriving landscaping business. He counts the joys of his life, among them financial stability, home ownership, a business, and a wonderful family. In Angel’s own words “Bethany Hill Place gave me the start I needed.”

“BHP is not just a nice place to live. If you want change in your life, it is not easy. But it is worth it. My wife and I feel blessed. We feel like we can help others.” Angel is still in contact with his former sponsors, as well as some of his former neighbors at Bethany Hill Place. He has hired two young men who grew up at Bethany Hill, becoming a mentor and role model himself.
