He represented King's in IN THE VAULT OF THIS CHURCH the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick from 1785 to 1816. He was born in Boston, the son of Nathaniel Coffin and Elizabeth Barnes. Coffin entered the British Army and fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill. He became a major in the Orange Rangers in 1777, serving in New Jersey and New York, and later transferred to the New York Volunteers, which saw action in Georgia and South Carolina. In 1781, he married Ann Mathews. Coffin became a major in the King's American Regiment in 1782. In 1783, he was placed on half pay and brought his family to what is now New Brunswick. Coffin acquired a large estate from Beamsley Perkins Glasier, where he built a grist mill and a sawmill. He also sold fish, lumber and rum. Coffin was named a justice of the peace and a judge in the Inferior Court of Common Pleas. In 1812, he was named to the New Brunswick Council. Coffin raised the New Brunswick Fencibles during the War of 1812. In 1819, he was given the rank of full general. In 1817, Coffin moved to England but he retained his position on the New Brunswick Council until 1828. He later returned to New Brunswick and died in Westfield Parish.

From Founders’ Day Address Thu 6 Mar 1958 by W Stewart McNutt, Professor of History, University of New Brunswick: JOHN COFFIN Easily the most colourful and certainly the most martial of our memorialists was John Coffin, a sea-faring lad of Boston who volunteered for service with the royal forces on the day of Bunker Hill. On the ascent of that fire-swept slope his conduct was so fearless that he was awarded a commission on the field and throughout the remainder of the war he was famed as one of the most redoubtable of the cavalry commanders on the British side. At Eutaw Springs, at the head of seventy of the King’s American Dragoons, he shattered 300 of the enemy in an open fight, losing only three of his own men and killing Draft 1b 24

St Saviour’s, Bath – Memorial Inscriptions

Names Inscriptions Notes sixty Americans – all with swords, for in the precipitation of the charge he had scorned to order his men to fire. Following the battle the rebel General Greene, though placing a price of $10,000 on his head, publicly pronounced upon his valour. When Charleston was occupied by the rebels he made an entrance to the city in order to visit the lady to whom he was betrothed and, according to a well-authenticated tradition, when his rendezvous was interrupted by a wary American patrol, he escaped capture by concealing himself beneath a hooped skirt though he was a man of six feet, two inches. Awarded a handsome sword by Lord Cornwallis in token of his distinguished services, he was a member of the advance guard of the provincial regiments that came to the Saint John River and superintended the clearing of land on the west side of the harbor of Saint John. Unlike most Yankees of his time he had a reverence for ancestry and tradition. On the banks of the Nerepis he purchased the estate of Beamsley Glazier and called it Alwington Manor, the name of a residence constructed by a Norman ancestor in Somerset on the shores of the Bristol Channel. . . . Like a good member of the English squirearchy he believed in the settled, ordered life of villages and when he died in 1838, a full general in the British Army, he was, after the fashion of a good English landlord, buried in the parish church at Westfield.

From the form for placing a General Officer’s Widow on the Pension List, dated 16 Jul 1838: I Ann Coffin of No 18 Alfred Street in the City of Bath in the County of Somerset do solemnly and sinceely declare, that I was lawfully married at Charleston South Carolina on the . . . day of October 1781 to John Coffin late a General in Her Majesty;s Serivce who died at St, John New Brunswick on 12 May 1838 that ever since his decease I have contnued a Widow

“AT REST.”

From a history of The Old Dulwich Burial Ground by The Dulwich Society: "Robert Stone was one of the Justices of the Peace for Surrey, and lived in Effra House, Brixton (Gents Mag).Between 1791 and 1806 he bought the Heathrow Estate in four parts; it was then known as Effra Farm. It comprised some 70 acres south of Coldharbour Lane on the east side of Effra Road and the north-east side of Dulwich Road. The value of the land was greatly enhanced by the layout of Effra Road in 1810 by the Lambeth Inclosure Commissioners, and again a few years later by the building of St. Matthew's Church. Stone divided the northern part of the area into plots and granted long leases. A few detached houses (none of which now survives) were then built. Robert Stone died in 1820, leaving a widow and seven children, all minors. His estate was so heavily burdened with debts that his executors refused to act, and his affairs were finally settled under Chancery supervision by a private Act of Parliament."

St Saviour’s, Bath – Memorial Inscriptions Crypt

Access to the crypt is by an external door at the eastern end of southern side of the church. Steps lead down to an area with boilers for the heating. There are lights. The burials are arranged between the vaulted supports which run west to east with 5 places at floor level and then three shelves, with two of these having 5 places and the topmost three, sometimes five. Each grouping therefore has the potential for 20 places. Each burial place is 2’ (60cm) high and 30” (75cm) wide although those at the top are smaller because of the curve of the vaulting. The covers have incised inscriptions of between two and seven lines. Some inscriptions have deteriorated but many are legible. At various places there are gaps which lead to an area which might have further burials. This was not explored.

The burials do not extend to the walls of the church and, in gaps, it is possible to see the void between the tombs and the walls. There is no ready way of accessing the voids without finding a gap on the shelves. It possible that there may be further burials there. Not all spaces are filled.

For numbering, given that the top row may contain differing numbers, I have taken the bottom left-hand side as number 1, with the bottom row as 1-5, the next row up 6-10 etc. The bays are numbered 1 in the south-eastern corner (the first on the left-hand side) up to 4 on that side, and then 5-10 with 10 opposite the stairs.

The form of the names n the monument are, as with most such, as initials and surname. This monument, however, doesn’t given rank and regiment.

In order to establish the full names of the individuals the lists of those who died in WWI, in particular the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and references in the Bath Chronicle, have been consulted. In most cases this has been successful.

The late Bill Hanna, who documented many war memorials in Bath, has pointed out that the process of putting together the list of names for the war memorials tended to be an informal one and depended on names being submitted and people recollecting the names of people they knew had died. So the Bath Chronicle of Sat 15 Sep 1917 has a sub-heading of ‘Larkhall Soldier Killed in Action’ and refers to Private George Albert Lockyer, of the Gloucestershire Regiment, but his name does not appear of the memorial at St Saviour’s.

Distinguishing between ‘C’ and ‘G’ on the memorial requires particular attention.

Name on memorial Name Notes From the Bath Chronicle of Sat 2 Nov 1918 p16: Lance-Corporal Tom Batten, Dorset Regiment, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Batten, of the Grosvenor Post Office, is reported to have been wounded on the night of October 12th. . . . Lance- Corporal Batten was formerly in the Somerset Light Infantry, and is an Old Edwardian.

From the Bath Chronicle of Sat 9 Jan 1918 p10: Mr. and Mrs. J. Batten, of Kensington, had known for some days that their elder son, Lance-Corporal Thomas Frederick Batten, Dorset Regt., became a casualty in night operations on October 11th, and now they have received officially the sad intelligence that upon that date he made the supreme sacrifice. Lace-Corporal Batten joined the Somerset Light Infantry very soon after the outbreak of war in 1914, saw active service with the Dorsets, and went to France for a second time in August of this year. . . From a letter written by a comrade in hospital it appears that the company of which Lance-Corporal Batten was an N.C.O. came under machine gun fire while carrying out a reconnaissance, and it was hoped, at first, that he might only have been wounded. He was educated at King Edward’s School, and his name is yet another addition to the sadly long list of Old Buys who have fallen in the war.

From the Bath Chronicle of Sat 30 Jun 1917 p7 with a sub-heading ‘Larkhall Mother Receives Good News’: Another of those instances, alas too rare, in which a soldier mourned as dead has been heard to be alive, has occurred locally. Mr. and Mrs. C. H. G. Morris, of 5 Salisbury Road, some time ago, received an official notification from the War Office that their son, Sergt. Herbert Morris, of the Lincoln Regiment, was killed in action on April 28. From this he returned to succeed Mr. Noad as headmaster of St. Saviour’s School, where his short period of tenure had been very successful. Soon after the outbreak of war Mr. Strong went to India with the Somerset Light Infantry and after twelve months passed his qualifying examination as an officer, and returned to England to take up his commission. For a time after returning, he was stationed near Plymouth and for six or eight months he was at Bovington Camp, near Dorset. At his own request he was then sent to Nigeria, being posted to the Nigerian Regiment. He left England in October last, and proceeded at once with his regiment to take part in the campaign in German East Africa, where he has now made the supreme sacrifice. Since his departure his parents have only received one communication from him, a postcard which arrived a week ago. He has two brothers in the Army, Sergt Edgar Strong, R.A.M.C., now stationed at a hospital in London, and Bombardier Arthur Strong, R.F.A., who has been serving in France for two years.
