1804 1/2C PLAIN 4, NO STEM PCGS MS63BN C-13 B-10 R.1 Thoughts on "The Forbidden Fruit" of ... and Russian Humor... and a Punk Rock Band

I was reading an article on the trip home from a coin show recently. It reminded me (surprise!) of coins.

The article was a review of a just published book. This book was written to help foreigners planning a visit to Russia to understand the subtleties of Russian culture.

OK - I'll admit it. On the surface that doesn't seem to have much to 1793 WREAT 1C LETTERED do with numismatics. And truthfully, it doesn't. EDGE PCGS AG03BN CAC S-11b or S-11C But the article quoted a favorite joke of the Russian people. This joke (cant see all of the edge in the is supposed to help illustrate the tenacious world view of the typical slab) Russian citizen.

And here it is (by the way - the Russian word for joke is "anekdot". And you thought no one learns anything from reading our newsletter?).

How do you make a Russian jump into the Seine River? Tell him that swimming there is forbidden.

And while you wipe away the tears of laughter from your eyes, I will tell you why that joke makes me think of coins. That bold Russian 1793 WREAT 1C VINE AND attitude about exploring "The Forbidden" also permeates the thoughts BARS ED PCGS GEN S-6 R.3 of many/most/all numismatists.

Think about it. Here are some of the most desired and desirable coins in US numismatics. They are also illegal to own:

1933 1964-D Peace Dollar. 1974 Aluminum Pattern Lincoln Cents Certain "non-accidental" spectacular error coins 1793 WREAT 1C VINE AND You could probably throw other coins like 1804 dollars, 1913 Liberty BARS ED PCGS GEN S-5 R.4 nickels, and even patterns into that group as well, as they could arguably have been on the "confiscation bubble" ( a term I just made up) at one time or another in our history.

The Most Dangerous Blob of Metal in America

Everyone knows that when you tell a little kid that the freshly made cookies cooling on your kitchen counter are for guests only, and not for them, they will think of nothing else until they can get their sticky little hands on them. It is a characteristic of most if not all humans, and something we probably never grow out of. 1859 1C PCGS PR64

The most egregious example of this coin-wise is the situation with the 1933 $20 gold pieces. In case you haven't been keeping up with coin news over the past few years, here is a summary (with my own unbiased views carefully concealed):

The US Government, in its wisdom, decreed that its citizens may possess any date of $20 gold piece that you wish to. Obviously. It is your right as an American.

Er, as long as it is not dated "1933".

No - we wouldn't want that. No sir-ee. We will bring down the full wrath of the most powerful nation on earth to anyone who would dare to possess a $20 gold coin with the date "1933" on it. 1877 1C PCGS MS65RB CAC

What about if I want a ten dollar gold piece dated 1933, you ask? Well, those are perfectly fine, of course! Enjoy them with your friends.

But woe to you who dare to possess the 1933 $20's. Why - the future of this great country would be imperiled. Somehow. Or some such nonsense.

In all fairness to the US Treasury, who these coins that we love so much, it is alleged that the 1933 Saints were stolen and that my friends 1909-S VDB 1C PCGS is a horse of a different color. None the less the coins exist and I MS65RB CAC suggest that the coins be sold into collectors' hands and the proceeds go to charity, thus legitimizing this treasured and forbidden fruit.

Perhaps I should mount a quixotic quest to make those 1933 $20's legal. Or instead of doing that -- I could just grab a beer and watch the final season of Breaking Bad on Netflix. Hmmm; tough choice.

Speaking of a Ban on Ownership...

During the gold confiscation in the 1930's one way to keep your gold from being confiscated was to become a coin collector. Astute banker 1909-S VDB 1C PCGS and businessman Louis Eliasberg did just that, and it eventually led him MS65RD CAC to build the greatest collection of US coins ever formed.

So I guess we collectors do have something in common with your typical Russian citizen. In addition to enjoying those hilarious jokes they tell, we share a desire to possess the Forbidden Fruit.

Once again - another installment of:

"Dave - what else do you have in stock right now that is really neat?" 1864 2C SMALL MOTTO PCGS MS64BN CAC Here are some coins I hand selected from our inventory that will make you sit up and take notice:

1864 2C LARGE MOTTO PCGS MS65BN CAC FS-1901

1793 WREATH 1C LETTERED EDGE PCGS AG03BN CAC

A wonderful Wreath medium brown in color with the date showing, 1884 3CN PCGS VF20 though weak. Finding affordable Wreath Cents that have been approved by CAC is difficult. How difficult, you ask? Well, this coin is the only Lettered Edge Wreath Cent that has been approved by CAC in AG03. In fact, CAC has only approved 14 Lettered Edge wreath cents in all grades. This is either a Sheldon 11b or S-11c; we cannot see all of the edge in the slab to be certain. CAC Approved!

1850 1C PCGS MS65RB N-10 R.1

A large amount of mint red on a date that traditionally has been quite difficult to find as such. The 1850 is much less frequently seen with lots of mint red than some of the other large cents dated in the 1850's, 1806 50C POINTED 6, NO ST but it is available at the same price. 1937-D 5C 3 LEGS NGC MS64 1798 $1 LARGE EAGLE PCGS XF40 BB-124 R.2 This is one of those coins that most collectors who start as kids want to have - along with such other key coins like the 1909-S VDB and the 1877 cents, and a 1916-D mercury dime. And this is a wonderful example in a perfect grade for many folks; after all, circulated coins cost nearly $2000 and the next grade up costs more than triple what this near-gem is priced at.

As you can see from the shattered reverse die, die steel and coining/engraving expertise were scarce, and took a back seat to simply getting the product out the door and into the hands of the citizens of our new nation. 1859 $1 PCGS PR63CA

1871-CC $1 PCGS F12

1827 50C SQUARE BASE 2 PCGS AG03 O-148 R.6+

With about 15 or so specimens known in all grades, this well worn bust half is among the rarest of the die varieties we have in stock at the moment. 1911-D $2.50 STRONG D PCGS MS61

1849 $1 PCGS VF35 CAC

A perfect example of what some collectors have started to call a "Circ Cam". For those unfamiliar with the term, it refers to a crusty, original coin with deeply toned fields and lighter toning on the devices. It has somewhat of a "cameo" look - thus a new term was "coined". A lovely coin for those who value originality. CAC agrees, and you are 1927 $2.50 PCGS MS65 likely to as well.

1923 $1 PCGS MS65 CAC

Do you realize how difficult it is to find wildly toned Peace Dollars? No one is quite sure why, but they appear only a tiny fraction as often as their Morgan dollar counterparts do. Here is a lovely gem uncirculated example, and it sports a CAC verification sticker too.

1799 $10 LARGE STARS OBVE PCGS VF25 BD-10 R.3

Early gold coinage is one of the holy grails of US numismatics. Everyone wants to add a piece to their collection, with the cost is often prohibitive. This coin, which is more worn than most other gradeable specimens but otherwise wholesome, might fit the bill. These early $10's are large - roughly the diameter of a $20 gold coin. And the "magical" date in the 1700's completes the picture for folks 1904 G$1 LEWIS AND CLARK who might want just one. PCGS MS65+

This particular RedBook variety is characterized by the stars on the obverse being so close they almost touch, the highest curl being light due to relapping, and the double punching of the 6 in two spots. Another neat characteristic is the giant die lump that starts on the I in AMERICA and ends in the center between the I and C. HLRC iPhone/iPad Website Icon

Many of our images are from the in-house services of PCGS & NGC. The only surprises you'll get when they arrive in the mail will be pleasant ones.

We also offer special discounts on tier grading. Call our main office in Norfolk for details.

We will work hard for your business. Give us a try and you'll see for yourself.
