9 NATIONAL TITLES // 19 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS // 93 ALL-AMERICANS // 2 HOBEY BAKER AWARD WINNERS November 10 vs Minnesota HOT OFF THE PRESS: Wolverines in the News Goaltenders reflect on beginning of season Anna Marcus | Daily Sports Editor Wednesday, November 8, 2017

A year ago, Jack LaFontaine and Hayden Lavigne had just begun their collegiate careers as goaltenders for the Michigan hockey team.

For the sophomores, a lot has changed in one year.

Now, after the Ferris State series, the two have each started four games, have guarded the net during an overtime performance and have taken on leadership as the sixth man despite still being underclassmen.

This new experience and increased playing time has given the netminders an opportunity to reflect on their performances early on in the season.

“On a personal note, I am so far happy, but not overly satisfied with my performance,” LaFontaine said. “I think there’s some tweaks I need to work out right now, but I’m working towards that on and off the ice. I think I haven’t reached my max potential, and I’m hoping with a little hard work I can meet that.”

Lavigne reiterated this sentiment of a desire to improve, naming that he wanted to hone in on cadence behind the net.

“These games where we are only giving up 25 or (around) 20 shots, I kind of tend to doze off,” Lavigne said. “And that’s one area where I need to work on — being able to dial it in and eliminate those bad timing goals.”

The goaltenders have combined for five wins, and a solid goals-against average of 2.365. Though their amplified roles this season add more pressure, the two have realized the benefits of having a two-man rotation, as opposed to three.

“With a two-man rotation, you really get to stay in the game,” Lavigne said. “You know what it feels like from week to week, you know what you want to improve on from week to week, which actually makes it a lot easier.”

Added LaFontaine: “Having a two-man rotation is a little bit easier. You can catch more of a groove physically.”

Eight games in, Michigan coach Mel Pearson is looking to have a go-to man set in goal. This starter may even emerge in the Wolverines’ upcoming series, which would result in a change to this rotation.

“We’ve had a pretty good sample size of where they are at,” Pearson said. “They’ve both played well, so at this point you’re not going to bury one guy. At the same time, if one guy gets hot, then he’s going to have the opportunity to play consecutive games.”

With this in mind, LaFontaine and Lavigne still view themselves as a unit that works in cohesion.

“I wouldn’t say it’s much of a competition, as much as we are a team,” LaFontaine said.

Hughes Shows Skills on Both Ends

The youngest player in NCAA Division I hockey has already started making his mark on the Michigan team.

Freshman defenseman Quinn Hughes had a breakout performance in Thursday night’s Ferris State rout, which Pearson deemed the blueliner’s best perfor- mance thus far this season.

“He doesn’t surprise me anymore. That was his best game,” Pearson said after the game. “When he’s on the ice, I tell people you’d pay to watch him. You really would. He’s a special player.”

In the game, Hughes got off a shot in the first period and three in the second — the most launched by a defenseman in the outing. In addition to his offensive contributions, Hughes stood his ground in the defensive zone.

“He didn’t have any blatant turnovers (Thursday),” Pearson said. “He seemed to be on the right side of the puck, he picked his places where he could jump in and try some things offensively.

“I thought he was real good. I thought in both games (of the series) he was pretty good, but Thursday stood out to me.”

The expertise of balancing offensive playmaking with staying back on defense did not come automatically for Hughes.

In earlier games, Pearson noted that the freshman struggled more with turning the puck over and getting trapped when attempting to shine offensively.

But following the weekend, Pearson believes that these kinks have been ironed out, and that Hughes now knows how to choose his offensive spots wisely.

“He was trying to do a few too many things offensively, and put himself in sort of a bad position defensively,” Pearson said. “And I think he’s really grown and learned from that over the course of the last few weeks.”

Wolverines maintain third-period intensity yet inconsistent in execution Benjamin Katz | Daily Sports Editor Tuesday, November 7, 2017

Following a dramatic, come-from-behind win against Vermont on Oct. 21, Michigan hockey coach Mel Pearson said his skaters had started to establish them- selves as a “third-period team.”

The next Friday at No. 19 Penn State, the Wolverines (5-3-0) had two one-goal leads in the final period, only to allow two Nittany Lion equalizers to force over- time and eventually secure a 5-4 Penn State victory. But the subsequent night was a different story, as Michigan scored two goals within 74 seconds early in the third, winning the game 5-2 and splitting the series.

Last Thursday, the Wolverines reverted to their new, self-proclaimed identity against Ferris State. What initially looked like a nail-biter over the first 40 minutes — with the Bulldogs one breakaway from tying or leading the game — quickly turned into target practice for Michigan come the third period.

After sloppy play on both sides of the puck — including being outshot 11 to nine in the second period — and a 1-1 stalemate after two periods, the Wolver- ines finally broke loose early and often in the final stanza. Michigan controlled possession time within the offensive zone, put 26 shots on net and scored four unanswered goals, sealing a 7-2 routing.

However, the next night again showcased late-game inconsistency. With a chance for its second straight home sweep, the Wolverines outshot the Bulldogs 12 to five and scored on a power play in the same frame. Nevertheless, Ferris State responded with the tying goal and eventually left Ann Arbor with a 3-2 overtime triumph and shocking series split.

Through eight games, 13 of Michigan’s 28 goals have come in the third period. But the squandered late scoring opportunities have slowly started to equal those capped off by goal flurries.

Despite the similar feel of yet another third period dominated by the Wolverines, the results were starkly different in the stunning loss to the Bulldogs. Pearson faults an inability to capitalize on quality chances in the third period as a major reason for a disappointing end to the series.

“When you look at the shots and shots attempted, I think we did a pretty good job taking the play to them,” Pearson said after Friday’s loss. “I think the shots were 22 to 12 and the ‘grade-A’s’ would be maybe six or seven to one, so I liked our third period.

“We were a little soft in our zone on their second goal, the tying goal, defensively. We have to engage a little bit harder, a little bit more aggressive, but we didn’t. And then they got a quick pass and a goal. But I liked our third period — I can’t tell you we had a poor third period — but we just have to finish. We had great chances and it’s going to bother me watching the game back and watching the missed opportunities.”

Though the team failed to execute Friday, Pearson holds confidence his team will continue to play with high energy down the stretch. He cites the presence of experienced upperclassmen as a catalyst for a recent, locked-in focus in the final period.

“I think our leadership is really good,” Pearson said last Thursday. “They’re doing a good job of keeping the team in the moment. We can as coaches ask them to do that, but we’ve got some real good leaders and extends to our coaches in the locker room. Just calm everything down, there’s a certain way we need to play to have success in the third period and we document that. Short shifts, manage the puck, play with discipline, a lot of things and if we can do that, we’re going to have success in the third period.

“We’ve got enough guys who can score. If you play on the right side of the puck, check the other team, you’re going to get your opportunities, especially when they have to start pressing. For the most part we did a good job, but we still have to get better. I know we’re only seven games in and I expect this to be in midseason form, but lots of really good things going on.”

Junior defenseman Luke Martin agrees with Pearson about the importance of veteran leadership, but doesn’t see his approach and composure change from period to period.

“I’m a solid steady presence back there,” Martin said. “I think I just continue to bring that in the third and hopefully be a little bit of calming influence on some of the younger guys. We just keep going forward and playing every shift like it’s going to make or break the game. And I think that’s just an important mentality in the third.”

Closing out games in dominant fashion starts and ends with prevailing on defense, an area that still needs to be improved, Pearson and players concur — es- pecially with No. 4 Minnesota (7-3-0) and its high-octane offense traveling to Ann Arbor this weekend.

The Wolverines allowed just five goals in the third period this season, but all came at precious times and some off avoidable defensive miscues. They ultimately cost Michigan two straight sweeps against Penn State and Ferris State.

Even with the hot Golden Gophers in town, the Wolverines expect to post impressive third period showings, stemming from a re-energized spark Pearson be- lieves his team possesses late in contests. But it’s a matter of exploiting scoring chances that will be the difference between a sweep for either team and a split against one of the Big Ten’s — and NCAA’s — best.

Michigan’s defensemen strive for consistency Jacob Shames | Daily Sports Editor Monday, November 6, 2017

Wherever Mel Pearson goes, offense follows.

When Pearson became the head coach at Michigan Tech in 2011, the Huskies were coming off a 4-30-4 campaign in which they averaged just 1.97 goals and 24.9 shots per game. But after only one season, the Huskies were outshooting opponents and scoring nearly one more goal per contest than they had the previous year.

As the head coach of the Michigan hockey team, Pearson has worked similar wonders. The Wolverines have gone from 51st in the country in shot attempts in 2016-17 to fourth this season and are tied for 10th in scoring.

Pearson’s teams have always been quick to grasp his up-tempo brand of hockey. While watching sophomore forward Will Lockwood blast down the ice or the first line of seniors Dexter Dancs, Tony Calderone and junior Cooper Marody work in perfect harmony, it’s easy to forget all about last season.

For Michigan’s defense, however, the learning process hasn’t been quite as smooth.

“We’ve got to buy in and make a total commitment to team defense,” Pearson said after the Wolverines’ 5-4 loss to Penn State on Oct. 27. “We’ll score goals; we’ve got enough guys that can score goals. But we’ve got to play a lot better defensively.”

Michigan allowed three goals in the third period and overtime of that contest, as well as 54 shots on goal. The following day, Pearson and the coaching staff arranged a longer-than-usual video session, which involved watching the game’s last five minutes and identifying defensive mistakes. This paid off, as the Wol- verines rebounded with a 5-2 win over the Nittany Lions to split the series.

“The last three goals in last night’s game, we had the puck possession and we just gave it away. Just poor puck management,” Pearson said after that game. “We (watched video) not to be overly critical or to pick on anyone but just as a learning process going forward, so when we get in a tough game somewhere down the line, we can play with that composure.”

But giveaways in the defensive zone have still plagued Michigan. Against Ferris State last Thursday, the Wolverines allowed just two goals, and both came as a result of avoidable turnovers — junior defenseman Nicholas Boka slipped and lost control of the puck, and Ferris State forward Lucas Finner stole the puck from sophomore forward Jake Slaker to score the Bulldogs’ second goal.

Pearson understands that eliminating what he terms “unforced errors” won’t happen overnight, and that one strong performance doesn’t mean that process is complete. On Thursday, he chalked many of the Wolverines’ defensive lapses up to the competitiveness of the blueliners in always wanting to make an out- standing play, even if one isn’t available.

“Just watched an NHL game this weekend and those defensemen, (if) they don’t have a play, they just gotta get it out and live for another day,” Pearson said. “I think that’s one of the big things. We have to just understand the situation.”

The Wolverines do have defensemen with the ability to contribute on offense — freshman Quinn Hughes, junior Joseph Cecconi and senior Sam Piazza have all tallied at least four points.

But priority number one still lies in the defensive zone, as Pearson has used statistics as motivation for the unit to perform.

“You call them together as a group to take pride in our statistics nationally,” Pearson said. “It’s a good reflection on your defensemen, your goals-against. ... We want to encourage them to do some things offensively but we want to be rock-solid defensively.”

Sophomore defenseman Luke Martin — one half of Michigan’s top defensive pairing, along with Hughes — also stressed developing a rapport with other defensemen as a unit is key for improvement.

“It’s a lot in practice and a lot in preparation, but the big key for me is communication,” Martin said. “Always talking with your partner, always dissecting shifts or plays and whatever it is and just getting on the same page and getting used to the way people play. Quinn and I — we’ve been talking so much and I think it shows that our chemistry and our togetherness. It’s gotten so much better and I think we still have so much left to build on.”

The aspect of chemistry has been hugely important to Pearson as well. While the Wolverines may lack experience or veteran presence in many areas, defense is not one of them, and Pearson has taken advantage of this, going as far as seating underclassmen next to upperclassmen in the locker room to aid their de- velopment.

“A lot of these guys won the Big Ten championship a couple years ago,” Pearson said. “So they’ve been through it, they understand what you need to do to have success and win championships. They have it, they experienced, it, they earned it. They understand what it takes. Even during the game, most players, they’re sitting right next to each other, they can add some advice to them or even in the locker room between periods and all these practices.”

Michigan’s transformation into one of the most dynamic offenses in the country took place quite rapidly. Building consistency behind this attack, however, has taken a bit longer. But through communication, video sessions and a strong focus on the defensive zone, Pearson and the Wolverines believe that stability will emerge in time.

Roos’ winding path leads to perfect fit with Wolverines Jacob Shames | Daily Sports Editor Thursday, October 12, 2017

If everything had gone as originally planned, Alex Roos would have already finished his senior season of college hockey. Instead, he’s spending his last year of eligibility over 1,000 miles away from where he started.

As a freshman forward at Colorado College, Roos was a key contributor, ranking second on the team with 10 goals. But before Roos’ sophomore season, the Tigers hired a new head coach, Mike Haviland. As Haviland remade the program with his own recruits, Roos’ playing time dwindled, and he scored just five goals combined during his sophomore and junior seasons.

“By the time my senior season came along, the coaches had decided to go in a different direction with the team and didn’t see me fitting into their plans,” Roos said. “I figured it would be best for me and the team that I pursue another opportunity.”

So Roos spent last spring in the classroom instead of on the ice, focusing on earning his economics degree. But by no means was he done with hockey.

“I took maybe a couple days off to kind of figure everything out,” Roos said. “(Then I) got right back into the gym and made sure I was staying in shape, skating, working on my skills. Really made sure that I used that time to not only stay in shape, but to get even better.”

Having graduated from Colorado College, Roos was free to play his final season as a graduate transfer for any program he chose without having to sit out a year. He settled on Michigan, where he had visited while in high school and was familiar with several members of the coaching staff — including current head coach Mel Pearson, who was then an assistant under Red Berenson.

It wasn’t only the prestige of Michigan’s hockey program that brought Roos to Ann Arbor, though — part of the appeal was his desire to earn a masters degree.

“Obviously knowing some of the staff here helped just with familiarity — them knowing me, me knowing them,” Roos said. “Also the school itself — I wanted to pursue my master’s degree at the business school, so getting into that program was a large part of it as well. And then just being a part of this tradition of being a Michigan Wolverine was something that I was really interested in, really excited me.”

The youth of the Wolverines’ roster also attracted Roos, as he saw an opportunity to contribute veteran leadership to the group. Pearson himself describes Roos as a “really good person” who “communicates well.” However, Roos has tried to balance his role of elder statesman with that of being a newcomer to the team.

“Being a new guy but also having experience, I haven’t really tried to force my knowledge on any guys,” Roos said. “Just kind of letting them know that if they ever need help or have any questions, I’m here. Hopefully show them by example by leading the way on the ice and showing the proper way to play. Just anything I can do to help.”

Despite this expertise on and off the ice, Roos has had to deal with his own share of new experiences. This includes the drastic change in environment from Colorado College — a liberal arts school with an enrollment of just over 2,000 — to Michigan, a university nearly 20 times as large, and having to fit in as a graduate student without an incoming class.

According to Roos, his teammates have made this transition as smooth as possible.

“The guys have been more than inviting and welcomed me with open arms, so that was really nice,” Roos said. “Just the overall feel of being in a bigger town, bigger school was definitely a little bit of a culture shock, but I feel like I’m adjusting well and really enjoying myself.”

Roos certainly does appear to be enjoying himself on the ice. He got started on the right foot in his first game with the Wolverines, scoring a goal and adding an assist in an exhibition victory over Western Ontario, and also found the net in Michigan’s official season opener at St. Lawrence last weekend.

“It had been a while since I’d scored a goal,” Roos said. “But it was definitely exciting and nice to get one in the first game and get that feeling and adrenaline rush of scoring.”

The Wolverines’ youth and difficulties scoring were both well-documented last season. And while Roos might not be able to fix these problems by himself, he’s given Michigan just what it needs in both of those areas.

“You have to earn your experience,” Pearson said. “You can’t win it in a lottery. Someone just can’t bang their magic wand and give you experience — you have to acquire it. I think that really helps when you’re dealing with younger people and being able to help them go through some of the things he did.

“He just adds to that senior class because he’s been through it. He’s spent four years in college already so he understands the ups and downs, the grind of col- lege and the academic balance with the athletic balance. He’s a great addition.”

9 NATIONAL TITLES // 19 CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS // 93 ALL-AMERICANS // 2 HOBEY BAKER AWARD WINNERS November 10 vs Minnesota HOT OFF THE PRESS: Wolverines in the News Pearson, Wolverines look to benefit from extra practice time Ben Katz | Daily Sports Editor Tuesday, October 10, 2017

There’s a common phrase often heard around the Michigan hockey team’s practices.

“When the time to perform has arrived,” says coach Mel Pearson, “the time to prepare is long gone.”

Following a split in their first regular season contests — a 3-1 win Friday against St. Lawrence and 3-0 loss Saturday at Clarkson — the Wolverines are looking to take full advantage of fall break and a bye week to prepare for their first home series next weekend against Vermont.

“I’m really looking forward to this week and next week,” Pearson said. “We get nine quality practice opportunities and it’s a ‘get-better week.’ We have to ap- proach each and every opportunity to get better, and we will.”

During the preseason, coaches were allowed just two hours weekly to lead practice, leaving players to finish drills on their own — which Pearson believes may have contributed to a “drop-off” in speed and concentration near the tail end of practices. Before its trip to upstate New York, Michigan had merely four standard practices.

But with the regular season now underway, coaches have begun running practices for up to 20 hours weekly, a valuable teaching and learning opportunity for the new staff.

“You can do a lot more coaching, which is nice,” Pearson said. “You can take your time in doing drills. You don’t have to just rush, rush, rush. Now you have a little bit more time. If you need to slow it down, you can. We want high-tempo practices, but at the same time, we can stop drills and correct them. I felt that in two hours it was hard to do that because you have to go right to the next drill because of the limited time.

“I think the players really feel good about that too. They want to be coached. They want to play at a high level and a high pace all the time. As much as you think they can do that on their own, they still need that leadership or that direction, so now we’ve been able to provide that, which is good.”

A blended team of newcomers and veterans, the Wolverines are still grasping new systems under Pearson. In his first three games — including the 10-1 exhi- bition victory Sep. 30 over Western Ontario — Michigan experimented with new formations in game speed.

The next nine practices will focus on further developing and executing those schemes.

“A lot of it is new and a lot of it will be a little bit to adjust to,” said sophomore forward Will Lockwood. “But I think it’s going to help us in the long run for sure.

“(The coaches) give us all the tools to succeed on the ice and in the games. And now it’s up to us to prepare and to be ready going into the weekend.”

Pearson is confident his team, specifically the freshmen, will start to grow into a routine of efficiently preparing each week for upcoming series. After focusing mainly on defense one week to puck protection and penalty killing the next, the Wolverines will have ample time to assess and enhance many aspects of their game — especially the power play, after a disappointing 0-for-8 showing against Clarkson — before hosting the Catamounts.

“Well, we’re going to have to continue working on our special teams, especially five-on-threes,” Pearson said. “We haven’t had a lot of opportunities to work on those … but those are huge momentum swings in the game, and if we can score one on that, then we’re right back in.”

So, when it’s time to perform and win games and the time to prepare is indeed long gone, Pearson hopes his motivational maxim will resonate with his team.

HOT OFF THE PRESS: Wolverines in the News MiStory: Dream BIG (by Cooper Marody) Cooper Marody | MiHockeyNow.com September 29, 2017

As long as I can remember I wanted to be a Wolverine. Growing up, I was obsessed with Michigan sports and went to many games with my dad. I had my eighth birthday party at Yost. I had a Michigan-themed bedroom. Every day I woke up to an amazing “view” of the Big House.

Even though it was just a mural of Michigan Stadium on the wall next to my bed, it did inspire me to dream BIG – so much so that in my fourth grade yearbook I wrote the following:

“When I grow up I want to play in the NHL. But before that I have to go to college. I will go to college at Michigan and I will play hockey there.”

While my 10-year-old self thought this was a realistic plan, my 11 to 15-year-old self had some serious doubts about it. As a kid I was a late-bloomer with a “terrible hockey birth- day” – Dec. 20.

All the other guys on my team shot past me on the growth chart. I got cut from my AAA team. Then when I started high school I got cut from the varsity team at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. I even got cut from the USHL team that drafted me a few years later. I am living proof that if you have a dream and are willing to work hard and overcome adversity, there isn’t anything you can’t accomplish, but sometimes that was a difficult thing to tell myself during my youth hockey days.

Two years into my high school hockey career at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, I had to make a big sacrifice to pursue my hockey dream. At 16, I moved away from home to play hockey in the United States Hockey League – our country’s only Tier I junior hockey league. At the time I was a fairly shy person, but it’s safe to say moving away got me out of my shell. Playing in the USHL requires you to live with a host family, change schools and be away from home. I had to mature very quickly.

A few months into the season I got “shoe checked.” What does it mean to get shoe checked? Usually at team dinner at a restaurant, if one of your teammates marks your shoe with something without your knowledge, you have to stand up in front of the entire restaurant and sing a song. I was absolutely petrified; I barely knew my teammates, let alone anyone in this restaurant. I stood up and sang “With You” by Chris Brown. Although I was scared, it turned out pretty good. I thought I had a decent voice when I was singing along to my favorite songs alone in my car, but this was totally different. After my first live performance, I wasn’t exactly committed to being a singer, but I did enjoy it and kept practicing in my car.

While playing in the USHL, my dream of playing for Michigan became a reality, too. When they offered me, Coach Berenson said to take some time and think about it and let us know. I surprised him by committing on the spot. I explained to Red that I had been literally thinking about this my whole life and didn’t need to contemplate it for another minute.

The following hockey season I helped lead my Sioux Falls Stampede team to a USHL Clark Cup Championship. A few weeks after that I moved another step closer to my even bigger dream of playing in the NHL when I was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers. The draft was a surreal experience and very humbling. It was a true honor to be drafted, but in reality it means the hard work to fulfill that NHL dream was just beginning.

One summer night up north before my freshman year at Michigan, my dad gathered my family in the living room of a vacation home and said he had a surprise for us. He explained that he bought a guitar a few months back and had been secretly practicing. Then he played a Luke Bryan song. Although he was only playing four basic chords, I was in awe and was instantly inspired. If my dad’s guitar weren’t left-handed, I would have been up all night learning. So the next morning I drove to downtown Cheboygan and I was able to find an inexpensive acoustic guitar. No one, including me, would have ever dreamed that I would be playing guitar and singing. A hockey player can’t do that, right?

By the time I moved into my dorm my freshman year at Michigan, my guitar skills had improved to where I was able to play basic chords and sing along with them. As I got more confidence, I started playing and singing for friends in the dorms. I didn’t want to annoy my roommate and teammate Joseph Cecconi with my guitar playing, so I would go to one of the dorm’s music rooms. Each music room also had a piano. So after going to class, hockey practice, and finishing my homework, I went to one of the music rooms, practiced guitar and started teaching myself how to play piano. After getting tired of just playing piano and guitar covers, I started writing my own songs, too. Since then, my skills in piano, guitar, singing and songwriting have come a long way (at least in my humble opinion).

My teammates have been very supportive and encouraging, which has been awesome. They have played my songs in the weight room and recently asked me to bring my guitar to our team retreat so I could play some of the songs around the campfire that I have written.

While my childhood hockey dreams are starting to come true, I also realize that I am more than just a hockey player. As my wise youth hockey coach (he also goes by ‘Dad’ in the Marody residence) told us every season, “Be a fine young man that happens to play hockey.” Coach Berenson also echoed this mantra. Red always focused on who you were as a person not just a hockey player. On my recruiting visit, he could have easily impressed me by mentioning all the superstar players Michigan advanced to the NHL; instead, the former players he proudly talked about first were now military men, entrepreneurs, doctors and neurosurgeons. He fostered an environment of being a ‘leader and best’ on the ice and off. That’s why I think so many former Michigan players have pursued entrepreneurial and philanthropic interests in addition to or after having NHL careers.

It’s not just Red who fosters this. I think Coach Pearson is exactly the same way. In fact, this is a common theme at Michigan as further evidenced by Associate Athletic Director Greg Harden.

One day I was watching a documentary about one of my idols on YouTube called, “Inside the Mind of Tom Brady.” I was surprised to learn that Tom Brady’s champion mindset was developed with the help of Harden. The documentary describes in fascinating detail Tom Brady’s challenging path to greatness. However, what resonated with me the most was when Harden said, “My job was to convince Tom Brady that with or without football he was going to be great. And once he seized that, he had no limits. I expected him to be good at everything that he did…everything.”

After hearing that, I was compelled to seek out Greg Harden. From the first meeting I had with Greg, he told me to plant the mindset into my head that, “With or without hockey, you will be great.” He told me to work to be great at everything I did, including hockey, music, school, everything.

So what does this ‘with or without’ mindset really mean? It is certainly not taking away your drive or commitment to being a professional athlete. It is doing the exact opposite. It’s fostering your drive by freeing your mind and encouraging you to avoid putting all of your self-worth into solely being an athlete. It allows the athlete to see that they are a multi-dimensional human being. To be truly successful, it is crucial to focus on not only striving to be a great hockey player, but also striving to be a great man in all aspects of your life. Professional success would mean nothing to me if I were not also a great husband, father, and role model someday.

It all goes back to what my dad preached to me from a young age.

“Be a fine young man that happens to play hockey.”

I am so excited to start a new era of Michigan Hockey this season with our new coaches and Team 96. This year in Ann Arbor, I am living in a 12th floor apartment. There is a win- dow right next to my bed and every morning when I wake up, I have an amazing view of the actual Big House. And just like when I was a kid, it is still inspiring me to dream BIG.

Pearson brings confidence, now Michigan needs to back it up Mike Persak | Daily Sports Editor Tuesday, September 19, 2017

It’s an unenviable task to take over a coaching job from the greatest coach in the history of a program.

That’s exactly what Mel Pearson is doing with the Michigan hockey team.

For Pearson, though, taking over for Red Berenson — the Wolverines’ coach for the last 34 seasons — isn’t as enormous an undertaking as it may seem. He served under Berenson in different capacities for 22 seasons before taking his first head coaching job with Michigan Tech in 2011. Pearson knows Ann Arbor, and he knows Michigan hockey.

He’s surrounded himself with people he’s familiar with, too. Associate head coach Bill Muckalt won two NCAA Championships as a player with the Wolverines while Pearson was behind the bench, and he was an assistant coach under Pearson with the Huskies. Assistant coaches Brian Wiseman and Steve Shields were each recruited by Pearson to play at Michigan, and they coached with Pearson once their playing careers were finished.

For one, Pearson and Muckalt have a tenure of turning around struggling hockey programs. They did it together with Michigan Tech, bringing them from a cellar-dwelling team to two NCAA Tournament appearances in just five years, and Muckalt won a Davis Cup with the USHL’s Tri-City Storm for the first time in the franchise’s history.

But whether or not they can turn around a Wolverines team that was the third-worst in the country in Corsi-percentage remains to be seen. Additionally, there are the highly-touted freshmen, who look like they’ll make immediate, positive impacts. Namely, forward Josh Norris — a first-round NHL draft pick in 2017 — and defenseman Quinn Hughes — a projected first-round pick for the upcoming 2018 draft — were picked by Pearson as first-year players who have impressed him.

Even their contributions aren’t a sure thing yet, though.

Still, at Michigan’s Media Day on Tuesday, players and coaches alike repeated that there’s a greater sense of optimism this season.

“I think it’s just an excitement of everybody having a fresh start,” said senior forward Dexter Dancs. “I don’t think Red and Mel’s coaching styles are too different but it’s just the excitement of having a new guy and having a clean slate.”

Added sophomore forward Will Lockwood: “Mel’s bringing a lot of energy, and we have a lot of new guys, and everyone fits well. I think a lot of the chemistry between guys is great which has brought the mood in the locker room up too.”

This talk of positive feelings came the day after the Big Ten Preseason Coaches’ poll predicted the Wolverines would finish second to last in the conference. Many of the Michigan players shook it off as something they try not to pay attention to, but all of them knew about the poll, and some of them let on that it will be used as motivation.

“We don’t try and look too much into that,” Dancs said. “But it’s obviously a little bit of an F you, I guess you could say, to us. We’re excited to prove everyone wrong.

“It was a little bit of a topic of conversation, but, you know what, we’re not looking too much into it. But it will definitely be in the back of our mind when we play every team this year.”

That type of language ran up and down the team. Whether it was sophomore goaltender Hayden Lavigne saying the Wolverines will “come out as the underdog and finish on top,” or Muckalt saying the beauty of the game is that it isn’t on paper, everybody relayed a feeling of confidence that this will be a successful team. And if you want to know where the confidence comes from, look no further than the new head coach.

“I’m not a forecaster, but if I had to pick, I’d pick us to win the league,” Pearson said. “We’ve got all the things we need to be successful, but you’ve got to go out and execute. You’ve got to go out and prove it.”

And therein lies the challenge. Despite all the talented young players, the grizzled veterans who have been through the ups and downs of the last few seasons and the new head coach with a seemingly magic touch, Michigan still has to perform on the ice.

The Wolverines have talked the talk. Now, when the regular season begins on Oct. 6, they need to walk the walk.

Defensive performance part of Pearson’s master plan Robert Hefter | Daily Sports Writer Monday, October 2, 2017

The Michigan hockey team’s 10 goals against Western Ontario on Saturday night was a spectacle of an offensive performance. What many overlooked, though, was how pivotal the defense was in securing those goals.

Senior defenseman Cutler Martin’s snipe past the opposing goaltender for the Wolverines’ eighth goal against the Mustangs was evidence of such. “We have to understand and get in the habit of moving the puck up quick,” said Michigan coach Mel Pearson. “We want to be a quick transition team and try to go from our defensive zone to the offensive zone as quick as we can.”

Pearson’s sentiment is consistent with the way the Wolverines’ blueliners performed in their first exhibition match.

“I think that coming back — this is going to be my fourth year — the defense has a good footing on what we need to do,” Martin said prior to the exhibition Saturday. “We need to play defense first, have that mindset, be aggressive, be mean on the ice.”

And mean they were.

Immediately at the onset of the matchup, sophomore defenseman Luke Martin fired off a shot from the blue line that found its way into the net off a deflection from senior forward Dexter Dancs.

Throughout the night, the defense simultaneously protected the Michigan net while forcing a plethora of scoring opportunities for the offense, giving the whole squad a weapon behind the blue line.

In the second period, Martin assisted fifth-year senior forward Alex Roos, and junior defenseman Joseph Cecconi assisted senior forward Tony Calderone. Then, in the third period, Luke Martin assisted junior forward Cooper Marody, junior defenseman Nicholas Boka assisted Martin, Cecconi assisted sophomore forward Jake Slaker and Boka again assisted sophomore forward James Sanchez.

In total, the Wolverines’ defense racked up nine points, proving just how multi-faceted the team may be this year.

From the crisp passing to the multitude of scoring opportunities from every point around the ice, the Michigan offensive effort — which includes the defense in this scenario — seemed cool, composed and deadly.

“I think it’s guys just buying into the system,” Calderone said. “I think a lot of guys are starting to hold onto the puck more, getting more confident.”

In a game that most regard as an easy matchup, the Wolverines certainly showed that their aggressive mentality works.

And while some might argue Saturday’s outburst came in a meaningless exhibition game, one would only need to look back at last year’s exhibition for a sign of growth. Against Windsor, last season’s Michigan defense recorded zero points. This much of an improvement in a year’s time shows that Pearson’s master plan may result in a higher-powered attack from both ends of the ice.

5 things to know about the hockey team George Sipple | Detroit Free Press Tuesday, September 19, 2017

New coaches, new players and a new foe were among the biggest topics at Michigan hockey media day at Yost Ice Arena this afternoon. Detroit Free Press sports writer George Sipple looks at five things to watch as U-M hockey moves into a new era after the retirement of coach Red Berenson.

1. New head coach Mel Pearson: An assistant under Berenson from 1998 to 2011, Pearson took on a big challenge when he returned to his alma mater, Mich- igan Tech, and turned that program around. Now he’s tasked with replacing a legend and proving that he was the right choice for one of the coveted jobs in college hockey. Pearson has assembled a rock star coaching staff of former U-M players. He retained Brian Wiseman and volunteer assistant Steve Shields, then hired Bill Muckalt, his former assistant at Michigan Tech.

“I’m excited,” Pearson said. “We’ve only been on the ice for a couple weeks, for two hours per week. So it doesn’t give you a lot of time, but in those two weeks I’ve seen some great improvement and obviously some great enthusiasm on the ice. We’re excited. We just want to start playing some games.”

2. The Wolverines aren’t happy that they were picked to finish sixth in a preseason poll by Big Ten coaches. “That’s how they view us and that’s their opinion,” Pearson said. “We’re out to prove them wrong. Whether you’re picked to win the league or picked to come in last in the league, you have something to prove. So we’ve got a lot to prove, but we’re not concerned by what the coaches think. We’re concerned about how we play and getting better every day. That should be just a little extra motivation.”

Pearson said he’s not a forecaster, but “if I had to pick, I’d pick us to win the league.” He’s certainly not trying to temper expectations in his first season. “We should be disappointed in that,” Pearson said of the poll. “You don’t want to put a lot of stock on polls, obviously, but still, we get it. We understand where people think about us. We have some work to do.”

3. Forward Josh Norris and defenseman Quinn Hughes are going to be fun players to watch. While Pearson’s fellow Big Ten coaches didn’t give the team love in the preseason poll, they did select Norris and Hughes, as well as returning forward Will Lockwood, as preseason players to watch.

Norris, from Oxford, and Hughes, are expected to be major impact players this season for the Wolverines. Norris was drafted 19th overall by the Sharks in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. Hughes is considered a top prospect for the 2018 draft.

“I think I’m going to have to take a picture and send it to him today,” Norris said when asked what his father, former Michigan State forward Dwayne Norris (1988-1992), thinks about him finally wearing maize and blue.

4. Pearson and his staff need to get more out of returning players. Nobody really expected Tony Calderone to lead the Wolverines with 15 goals last season. Will Lockwood dealt with a shoulder injury last season and should improve on last year’s totals: eight goals and 12 assists for 20 points in 30 games. A full season for Cooper Marody should result in a lot more offense for the Wolverines. He was academically ineligible for the first half of the season, but finished with five goals and 10 assists for 15 points in 18 games. The Wolverines need more from Dexter Dancs (one goal) and Brendan Warren (three goals).

“It’s a fresh start for everyone,” Dancs said. “It’s no secret I haven’t had the best three years here. Haven’t played as well as I’ve wanted to or the coaching staff wanted me to.”

5. The Wolverines are looking forward to the addition of Notre Dame as a Big Ten opponent this season. The Wolverines visit South Bend in early January and host the Fighting Irish in mid-February. “That adds another four tough games to our schedule, but we really look forward to that,” said Will Lockwood. “Hopefully the outcome is in our favor.

“Right away the rivalry will kind of show itself…. I think of every Big Ten game as a rivalry game. We’re going to take it as that. I think the atmosphere and the speed of the game will show.”

Michigan hockey coach Mel Pearson looking forward to picking Jim Harbaugh’s brain Ryan Zuke | MLive Tuesday, September 19, 2017

Michigan’s Mel Pearson isn’t afraid to bounce ideas off other prominent coaching figures. It didn’t take long for the Wolverines’ first-year head hockey coach, who was hired in April to replace legendary Red Berenson, to begin picking the brains of other Michigan coaches.

Speaking at Michigan hockey media day inside Yost Ice Arena on Tuesday, Pearson said he has had brief interactions with enigmatic football coach Jim Har- baugh since his hire, and he is looking forward to more in-depth conversations.

“Me and coach Harbaugh and coach Don Brown (defensive coordinator) one day got talking,” Pearson said. “I am looking forward to having more interactions with him (Harbaugh), just picking his brains, too. How he manages his team.

“I think it is so important this day and age to be able to manage young people, from how you let them use their cell phones and different things on the road. There are so many things we can talk about.” Pearson, 58, is no stranger at Michigan. He coached under Berenson for 23 years prior to spending the past six as the head coach at Michigan Tech.

Pearson developed a strong relationship with men’s basketball coach John Beilein when Pearson previously was at Michigan. The two have stayed in touch, and Beilein has been a valuable resource for Pearson. “It’s always nice to be back and see John,” Pearson said. “(He has been helpful with things) from travel to managing teams, and since I’ve been back, a lot of little things. There are a lot of different things that have happened in the last six years, with time management things with our student-athletes. Just to talk about general things such as managing your team has been most important.”

The most impactful resource for Pearson, other than his current coaching staff, has been Berenson. Although Berenson retired in April after 33 years behind the Michigan bench, he remains involved with the university as a special adviser to athletic director Warde Manuel.

Pearson and Berenson communicate on a regular basis, which has helped expedite the transition process.

“We talk quite a bit,” Pearson said. “I just saw Red this morning. Probably daily we cross paths or are on the phone, which is great. We share a lot of different ideas. He is a great resource to help me understand some of the players and maybe what they need to work at, which I may not be as familiar with here.

“He is such a great hockey guy, has such a great hockey mind. It is good to bounce things off him. It is nice to have someone here like him that you can go to. He called me the other day and said, ‘Hey, do you mind if I come over to practice?’ That is the way he is. I said, ‘Red, the door is open. You can come whenever you want. You are always invited here and we’d love to have you here.’ I don’t think he wants to get in the way, but I don’t think he could ever get in the way.” Pearson will make his Michigan head coaching debut Sept. 30 in an exhibition game against Western Ontario at Yost. The Wolverines open the regular season Oct. 6 at St. Lawrence.

“I’m excited,” Pearson said. “We only have been on the ice a couple weeks for two hours per week, so that doesn’t give me a lot of time. But in those two weeks I have seen some great improvement and some great enthusiasm on the ice, so we are excited. We just want to start playing some games.”

HOT OFF THE PRESS: Wolverines in the News U-M Hockey: Pearson Says He’s Ready – Thanks To Red – To Take Over Wolverines Terry Jacoby | We Love Ann Arbor Monday, October 9, 2017

Before the collegiate hockey season began Mel Pearson’s phone rang. It was former Michigan coach Red Berenson, calling his former assistant coach and the guy taking over for him after 33 years behind the U-M bench.

“Yeah, he wanted to know if it would be OK if he came to practice,” said Pearson, who returns to Michigan after six successful seasons as head coach at Michigan Tech. “I just told him the door was always open and he’s welcome anytime. I am just so fortunate that he’s still around and we can talk hockey. And he’s been great with the transition, giving me some insight on players, academics, travel and the Big Ten. He wants to help but also doesn’t want to get in the way.”

Pearson returns to Ann Arbor following an impressive six-year stint as head coach at Michigan Tech where he led the Huskies to two NCAA Tournament appear- ances in the last three years while winning a WCHA regular-season title and a WCHA Championship in that span.

Pearson, 118-92-29 overall as head coach, including a 75-34-14 mark over the past three seasons, was a U-M assistant coach from 1988-89 through 1998-99 and as associate head coach to Berenson from 1999-2000 through 2010-11.

He played an integral role in developing the Michigan program into one of the most successful in the country. During his tenure, the Wolverines posted a 667- 243-71 record while capturing 11 Central Collegiate Hockey Association regular-season titles, nine CCHA Tournament crowns, two NCAA championships (1996 and 1998), and making 11 NCAA Frozen Four appearances.

Pearson, who took over in April, says things are “settling into a routine” just a few days before the Wolverines opened the season this weekend in upstate New York.

“It’s nice to get our season underway,” he said. “I’m all unpacked and it’s been a very smooth transition. Being here before certainly helps. I know the area and the surroundings and many of the people here in Ann Arbor.”

Pearson is a few months into his new position but it’s going to take some time and at least more than a few games until he fully understands the cards he has in hands.

“I have some prior knowledge on most of the players from either coaching against them or recruiting them so that certainly helps,” he says. “But until you get with them on a daily basis and see what they can do in games and pressure situations you don’t have a full picture of what you have. A lot of that comes from learning who they are as people. And that’s a big part of coaching. It’s managing people and young men and it will take some time to figure out what makes them go. A few games in we will know a lot more.”

“It was a tough decision, but it wasn’t,” said Pearson, who became the ninth head coach in University of Michigan hockey history. “What made it difficult was how well I was treated at Michigan Tech from the president to the athletic director to the community. They embraced me and my family. What makes it difficult is not where you’re going but what you’re leaving. Even when I left Michigan six years ago it was a great opportunity to be a head coach but I was leaving be- hind some quality people and relationships.

“Michigan Tech is just a great place to be. The people there let me do my job and the community really supported us and what we were doing.”

But Michigan is Michigan and no one understands that better than Pearson.

“I had a number of offers over the six years from professional hockey to head coaching jobs at Division 1 schools but I said many times that the only place I would consider would be Michigan and I’m very honored, privileged and thankful for the opportunity to come back.”

While Pearson doesn’t need a Sat Nav to find Yost Ice Arena some things have changed in Ann Arbor since he wore the Maize and Blue colors.

“Well, there is the new south campus complex and some new faces here,” he said. “Jim Harbaugh was obviously not here when I last coached here but I know him and it’s good to see him here. The changes have been mostly subtle. It’s good to come back and it’s been a good homecoming.”

Pearson was a standout high school player for Ikola (1952-54) at Edina East (Minn.) High School, while playing his collegiate career out at Michigan Tech under John MacInnes (1946-50), one of college hockey’s legendary coaches.

The new Michigan coach owes quite a bit to the former Michigan coach and that relationship has caused not only for a smooth transition but similar expecta- tions and the understanding of Michigan’s hockey tradition.

“Just his whole approach to not only the game but how he treats people away from the rink,” he says. “And his expectations not only for the hockey program and the University of Michigan but for our young men whether they are playing today or former players or on the ice or off the ice.

“One of the biggest things he taught me was how you constantly have to stay after it and you can never let your foot off the pedal and relax even after you win a National Championship or had a lot of success because as soon as you do there is someone there to pass you by.
