College is a good time to start building your credit. Unfortunately for many students – and adults, too – they don’t use credit cards properly and end up doing more harm than good. Here are a few tips for getting started the right way: Don’t Be Afraid of Credit: Staying away from credit cards won’t help build a strong credit profi le. Because a large portion of your credit score is determined by your credit history, the earlier you establish lines of credit, the better. Get Added as an Authorized User: It’s nearly impossible to get approved for a credit card if you have no income and/or are younger than 21. However, it’s easy to be added to a parent’s credit card as an authorized user. Mom and Dad can help monitor your spending to help teach budgeting. There’s also no credit inquiry and your credit report will refl ect the same credit utilization rate as your parents. Use Your Card Wisely: It’s important to realize that your credit card bill should be paid off in full every month. Treat your credit card like you would your checking account and don’t ever spend more than you can afford to pay back immediately. Review Your Credit Report: You should check your report at least once a year from each of the three credit bureaus to ensure all of the information listed is correct, and dispute it if it is not.
