JEREMIAH CLARKE (c.1674-1707)
Clarke was a chorister in the Chapel Royal between about 1685 and 1692, when he became organist at Winchester College. In 1695 he returned to London and found work as a composer for the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. He succeeded Isaac Blackwell as organist at St Paul’s Cathedral in 1699 and the following year was sworn as joint organist of the Chapel Royal with William Croft. He composed a considerable number of odes and other music for Court and State occasions, but continued with writing music for the theatre. Unhappy in love, he committed suicide on 1 December 1707. The principal works about Clarke are CLARKE-T1 and CLARKE-T2. He left many compositions for keyboard, a number of which were published as arrangements of pieces written for the theatre. These are listed in KEYBOARD-H and KEYBOARD-W. Works for the theatre with instrumental movements include the following: Titus Andronicus, 1687 (or by William Croft?) A Wife for Any Man, (lost play, 1695-7) Anthony and Cleopatra, (revival,1696?) The World in the Moon (with Daniel Purcell), 1697 The Island Princess (with Richard Leveridge and Daniel Purcell), 1699 All for the Better, 1703 Some other music comes from unidentified plays.
