6 Dear friends, Harvest Festival Harvest is from the old English word hærfest, meaning "autumn". Later it came to refer to the season for reaping and gathering grain and other grown products. I believe one of the pleasures of living in this part of the country is to see the seasons in all their glory, and we surely can’t miss the fields of grains swaying in the wind, and the fruit crops ripening on the trees and in the hedgerows, in gleeful anticipation of when they will be gathered in, or in other words harvested. And why festival? A thanksgiving and celebration to God for all his wonderful bounty and that everything had been safely gathered in. An early harvest festival used to be celebrated at the beginning of the har- vest season on 1st August and was called Lammas, meaning 'loaf Mass'. Farmers made loaves of bread from the fresh wheat crop and these were given to the local church as the Communion bread during a special service thanking God for the harvest. Nowadays, the main festival is usually held at the end of harvest, and churches celebrate the festival on different Sundays in their villages. In September and October, our churches will once again be celebrating harvest and will be decorated with flowers and produce and special loaves. Many in the congregation, and wider community, will also bring along gifts of food that form part of the decoration and which are then distributed locally, to those less fortunate. Harvest time is the main food collection time of the year for Deal Food Bank to replenish its stocks, and our churches will once again be supporting this project. This year, we would welcome as many gifts of tinned and packet food as possible (with long use-by dates, please) so that we can support the wonderful work they are doing. I know many of you already support the Food Bank by leaving gifts in the church or using the bins in the local supermarkets – and I do thank you for your support and generosity. If the Food Bank is something you keep meaning to support and haven’t quite got around to it, then can I please encourage you to do so now at this harvest time. There are collection boxes in the churches and I often find gifts just left on my doorstep. So at this harvest time, let’s not only say “thank you” to a truly generous and bountiful God, but really make a difference to the lives of those who are struggling just to survive, because in Jesus’ words “whatever you do to the least of my brothers or sisters you do to me”. Yours in Christ Cathy

8 ST JOHN’S HERITAGE ASSOTATION

We are now six months old and continuing to make progress towards raising money for YOUR local church to try to ensure that it is here for generations to come and that it becomes one of the central buildings in the village. Most people think of the church as only being there for somebody else and not them, and that it is used only on one day per week! However, we would like to see it used for a wide range of community activities such as music concerts and art exhibitions. But to do this, and to maintain its fundamental purpose of spreading God’s word, we do need to protect and improve the fabric of the building. To make this happen we do need more members and donations and I would ask that you give some serious thought to joining us, so please complete and return a Membership Form. If you can’t find a form locally, i.e. from the back of the church, then please contact me to have one sent to you either by e-mail or ‘snail-mail’! In addition, I am pleased to announce that the Association now has a Secretary, Mrs Cathy Cremin, who kindly volunteered to join us. We are also seeking a couple of additional volunteers to join the Committee as we try to put together a programme of events to raise money. We have had some interesting ideas, such as a Christmas Market in November (date to be confirmed) and a quiz in January/February, but it would be good to get some new ideas from YOU! If you are interested and would like to know more then please contact me, Norman Gilliland (Tel:- 381 589 or [email protected])

Volunteers needed

PA/Admin Assistant and Treasurer

Have you some spare time that you would be able to give to the church? If so, we are looking for two volunteers.

1. PA/Admin assistant to help Cathy with essential tasks across the benefice which includes working regular hours in the office at The Rectory in Kingsdown, maintaining systems and taking phone calls etc. for the four parishes.

2. Treasurer for Kingsdown PCC. Someone who can maintain financial records and look after the day to day accounts of the parish.

If you feel that you do have some spare time and are able to give a few hours to the church on a regular basis, please contact Cathy on 01304 373 951 for further information or an informal chat about either position.

Ringwould Rummage! Ringwould was buzzing with people on Saturday 3rd August, with over 20 stalls set up around the village selling everything from buns to bicycles. The sun shone all morning and it was lovely to see so many people really enjoying a stroll around the village and also admiring the beauty and special atmosphere in St Nicholas church, where there was a very brisk business selling tea and cakes. A really big thank you to everyone who supported this event. £400 was raised for the Friends of St Nicholas fund, and several villagers have reported that they made some good profits too, so everyone was a winner. If you are interested in becoming a Friend of St Nicholas, a group which raises funds to preserve the fabric of the church, then you will find information in the church and on the website http://www.ringwouldchurch.com/ringwouldstnicholas.htm Sarah Spanner on behalf of Friends of St Nicholas

VILLAGE BARBEQUE 3pm 10th August. Turnout was disappointing with only 30 adults and a dozen children. The weather was kind and the kids enjoyed games and the fancy dress. Or what happened to the village during the War, as it stood facing the Germans across the Channel? When was mains water and electricity installed here, and how did everyone manage before? What sort of shops and schools were there? When were all the new houses built? All these questions, and many others, are answered in a new CD called Memories of Kingsdown, specially produced for Kingsdown Con- servation Group by David Harding. The cover illustrations are taken from paintings by Don Arnold, Kingsdown's oldest resident. About a dozen local people (two or three no longer with us) offer first-hand reminisces of the days gone by. It's nostalgic, yes, but it's also historic. And it's evocative, vivid and fascinating. Everyone who loves our village is sure to want a copy. They can be obtained at any of the shops in Upper Street, price £10. Those living further away, who want to recall halcyon days by the sea, with the sun shining on the French cliffs just above the horizon, can order a copy by contacting Kingsdown Conservation Group either by post or e-mail. Bus Services 541 – Reducing Kingsdown’s chronic isolation A big opportunity for RKPC and KCG to increase Dover connections for Kingsdown KCC’s social subsidised 541 route for pensioner’s card holders and the public costs KCC £7 per passenger. This is due to low take up. Probably because residents are mostly unaware of the Regent Coaches service timetable as below. The 541 subsidised Deal service competes with the hourly 82. Why? The Dover service of 541 is uniquely valuable as it is the only public service to Dover. Steve Benjamin at KCC Integrated Transport [email protected] (01622 605 085) says that if Parish Council and Conservation Group can provide demand by signaling/ promoting it to the public, some 541 Deal services can be replaced with more vital Dover services which residents don’t have except on Tuesdays. Regent operator is Sam Regent on 01227 794 435. Most of the surrounding villages have KCC’s 544 to Canterbury Wed and Sat leaving Ripple 0940 and leaving Canterbury St Georges 1315. Ringwould and Kingsdown are not served. Why? Per- haps the community would agree to give up some 541 Deal services and have more Dover services instead. There are no 82 connections to Kingsdown after 6pm. Can this be changed?

From the editor Hi, everyone, I do hope you have all enjoyed your summer. I had quite an unexpected venture and ended up all on the spur of the moment on a Baltic Cruise visiting Denmark, Finland, Norway Sweden, Russia, Estonia and Poland. - a wonderful experience. Back to reality now and I am rushing to get Rural Roundup off to the printer. I do apologise, and I do hope you will forgive me, if you receive your copy a few days late this time. Another Bank Holiday hasn’t helped. As I mentioned in the last issue the Village Hall has had a make-over during the summer and looks all smart and clean at last. The Trustees are holding an ‘Open House’ with a little entertainment and refreshments on Sunday 20th October from 3.00. Do come along. Obviously Sunflowers are being grown again this year as I have seen several good specimens around the Villages. Please let me know if you have produced one over ten feet tall, as again this year, there will be a small prize for the tallest one grown. Doreen Clark

18 SECRETARY :- Kathy Erridge Tel: 01304 373 402 Meetings are held at 2.00pm on the second Monday of each month (except Aug) at Kingsdown Village Hall, Upper Street or Ringwould Village Hall, Dover Road.

Our July meeting was a great success despite our speaker having to cancel at the last minute. As an alternative various members spoke of their early working lives and these ranged from telephonists before automated switchboards, office workers at the start of the NHS, clerical assistant at Heathrow Airport over 60 years ago and other varied and amusing anecdotes. At the end of July our walking group enjoyed a glorious walk around Samphire Hoe followed by lunch at the White Cliffs Tourist Centre. Our recently formed Canasta group has proved very popular and we also have a theatre trip to the Marlowe planned for October. Our next meeting is on Monday 9th September at 2.00 pm in Ringwould Village Hall when Peter Ewart will talk to us about “Smuggling in Kent”. We are always pleased to welcome new members and visitors. Lisa Souter

Happy Birthday to all with Birthdays in September:- 1st - Margaret Allnutt, 6th - Georgina Maude, 7th - Margaret Gilling and 23rd - Jean Shore

What a lovely summer we have had. Alright, there has been the occasional hiccup with a little rain but it hasn't really spoilt any social events that have taken place especially during July. We had visitors from over the big pond and because the junior member of the family wanted a French stamp in his very new passport we took the ferry to . Not my first choice for going over the Channel but time was very limited. And what a surprise we got at the Town Hall. The planting in the gardens in front of the building was stunning. The thought and final layout of the garden was amazing and I came back to my very dry but fairly colourful garden with lots of ideas for next year. Back to this year, though, and by the time this goes to press, as they say, we will all be harvesting the fruits of all our labours. My runner beans are definitely better than last year and some will make their way to the freezer for the winter months. Carrots and beetroot have been so-so, but I am not complaining as I love pottering around in the garden looking a bit like Worzel Gummage!! Happy Gardening. Susan Martin - Chairman

It had been noticed by several residents of East Studdal that there had been an increase in quad bikes using the roads inappropriately, causing a danger to the rider and pedestrians. PCSO Ian Norton said that they are aware of the problems that some quad bikers were causing and any incidents could be reported to the Police by phoning ‘101’. He also said that there had been no serious crimes in Sutton Parish in the last year. 2. The fly tipping of rubbish has got worse in the rural lanes especially in the Willow Woods area. 3. The Parish Council gave a funding of £500 to Clever Clogs pre-school, Studdal. This was towards the cost of advertising the pre-school to increase clientele. £500 was also given to ’Spectrum’ (a children’s after school club) to purchase items that would help the youth of the Parish. Musical items and a new portable pool table were on their shopping list. These items would also be used by ‘Messy Church’ and ‘Jam and Jabba’ (youth group). 4. A letter from Anne Barnes, Commissioner, was read out to visitors which stated: That she is committed to community policing and that as part of her Police and Crime Plan has pledged to have a further 60 PCSOs and 20 more Police Officers for Kent. The Kent Police are currently recruiting PSCOs. Mobile Police Stations will also be travelling to the rural parts of Kent in the next few months which will provide reassur- ance to local communities. 5. It was mentioned that paying £40 per year to DDC for green garden waste bags was too high a price for some elderly and infirm parishioners. The Parish Council are to look into the matter. 6. A new Parish Council notice board was made by a local carpenter Bob Cox to replace the dilapidated board by Studdal Church Hall. ‘Thank you’, Bob. 7. A long search for the deeds for Studdal Playing Field, which relate back to the 1960s when Studdal scout group gave the land to the Parish Council, has unfortunately been unfruitful. The Playing Field will now go through the process of being registered with the Land Registry Office. The deeds are required to enable funding for a new play area to be obtained. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 3rd September at 7.30 in Studdal Church Hall. Found:…….. A small cream coloured cat was found on Sunday 4th July fatally injured in Homestead Lane, East Studdal. Please enquire on: 01304 375 142.

Oh what a lady! Where do you start? My friend.

Barbara and her husband Ray moved to Studdal 15 years ago after they retired, soon getting involved in village life. Barbara was president of Ashley with Studdal WI. Always a willing helper with Sutton fete on the cake and plant stalls, coffee mornings, flower arranging at the Church, giving classes and much more. She was a member of Gardening Club, winning many prizes. Her two great passions were flowers and her and Ray’s beautiful garden – not a weed in sight! Growing lovely flowers and vegetables, sharing surplus with others. With her great sense of humour and her ready smile, she’ll be sadly missed. Barbara Branton

Stephanie makes a difference Hello, my name is Stephanie and I have been chosen as the Junior Face of the Globe for the South East of . My Journey began when I was 7yrs old (now 9) and I was selected as the Rosebud Queen for the Deal, Walmer and Kingsdown Carnival. I so enjoyed my year and got the bug. When I had the opportunity to enter Face of the Globe, I was so excited and really wanted to enter. Part of the entry requirements was to raise money for Charity and I raised £1,600 and this was divided, 50% to the Kent Air Ambulance, 25% to the D.W.K.R.A. and 25% to the Rainbow Children's Foundation. I was so proud of the support I had. I was also so very proud to have won the crown and the sash as Junior Face of the Globe for the South East and now I have the opportunity to go to London and to Paris and Disneyland Paris, for the Grand Finals and compete against contestants from around the world. I cannot say how awesome this is, and if I do not win I would have had a fantastic journey to get there, and taken part in something so special, which will stay with me for the rest of my life. I still need to do fundraising as part of the journey and have several ideas in the planning. I am running a Charity Beautiful Pageant, where people may enter for £5 and then the photos will be judged and the winners will get a prize. This is open to all age groups, male and female, from babies to the elderly; everyone is a beautiful person someway. I will be posting other events as I do them. I am asking all my friends and family, and friends of the family to help me on my journey. Please contact Julia Meager if you would like to enter the contest, donate to the charity or sponsor me. It really means so much and I was so upset when I heard of the children who do not have the things I have and I realise how lucky I am, and by my raising money to help them, I feel that I am making a difference. Stephanie Rees 26 St Peter & St Paul, Sutton by Dover, Church Fete on 22nd June 2013

May I, through you paper, pass on my heartfelt thanks to all those who made St Peter & St Paul’s Church Fete, held at Sutton Community Centre, such a success. Rain, overcast sky and other events in the area competed with us, but many turned out to support us and for this I am most grateful. Fetes and other Parish events are primarily about providing opportunities for the Parish to come together and I hope we achieved this in some measure. Fetes are also about raising funds to ensure the beautiful Church at Sutton continues to be looked after, for all those who pass by, visit or worship there. The generosity of all those who came to the Fête, donated cakes, gifts and prizes and gave so freely of their time is very much appreciated. For many years, Barr’s have provided us with wonderful plants to sell; Wellards have given us coconuts & fruit, P & O a ferry ticket and Cornilo Riding have donated riding vouchers for the raffle. Deal Fire and Rescue Service also joined in and provided us with a chance to see a modern fire engine at first hand. Our thanks go to all of them for their kindness and generosity. Finally, I must thank all our wonderful team of volunteers, many of whom had more than one engagement that weekend. Without their support the Fete could not happen. So, on behalf of myself and the Fete Committee, may we thank you all for eveything you have done to support your Parish Church. John Boardman

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * My many friends take heed. Six weeks ago I had a nasty, avoidable fall in my garden. I was"attacking" the unwanted ivy in an inaccessible area. In future my walls will be ivy-clad until my trusty gardening friend removes the surplus. The damage I did to my right hand was out of all proportion to the simplicity of the deed. I would like to say "thank you" to my many friends in and out of the village. Their generous help meals- on- wheels and countless appointments in their cars, as well as the chats relating to putting the world to rights, have healed the bruises and my broken fingers and I am at last driving again. Should anyone have such an accident please telephone me - it is pay- back time now that I am whole again. My love and best wishes, June Tanner

I looked out to see that they were being mobbed by two magpies intent on raiding the blackbirds’ nest. Clapping my hands and shouting loudly made the magpies fly off and I returned to bed with a cup of tea and a book, only to hear the blackbirds’ warning calls again. The fox was in the garden under the viburnum bush where the nest was located. This was being valiantly defended by the male bird. Hearing me at the window the fox moved away but the blackbirds continued to shout. Suddenly the viburnum shook as if torn by gale force winds. The birds were in a frenzy, then the fox reappeared out of the shrub and jumped over the fence into the road. Later, I found a beautiful nest lying on the ground containing a few pathetic little feathers. Now that we have the green lockable caddies for food waste, the few litter bins around the village are the only easy pickings, so the foxes are forced to hunt for their food. This is producing other problems with increased digging in the lawn for worms and insects, my favourite parterre is broken in several places by the cubs leaping about on the top, the dog-proof garden fencing is being undermined and the smell can be overpowering. We have tried various granules and liquids without success and will shortly be installing an ultrasonic device but whether this will act as a deterrent we shall have to wait and see. Our house used to be called “Foxburrow” so we are not surprised to have foxes in the garden and in the past have enjoyed their antics but this year they have become real vandals. Does anyone have a solution to this problem? Mary Lord

30 Letter from Cornwall. Rural Riding. In my last piece I was wondering aloud. Now let’s wander for a change. The year is 1799; William Holland is installed in his parsonage and will continue to keep his diaries through the tumultuous years that follow from the French Revolution, the American War of Inde- pendence and the Napoleonic wars. Times in which great changes were wrought held his interest on a global scale no less than did the affairs of his parishes and parishioners. His is an engaging personality and his observations are nothing if not forceful! How did he see his contemporaries? “The Somersetshire people are of a large size and strong but in my opinion very slow and lazy and discontented and humoursome and very much given to eating and drinking.” He was no less opinionated when castigating a brother; “a man of no principle”. In 1800 the parson is in need of turf. The supplier is named Tricky. William calls him “as rascally faced fellow as I ever met with”. At the end of 1801 he declares: “Long live Great George our King. May French principles, Atheism and Irreligion vanish from the face of the earth, Amen”. He was looking at a Europe in which Great Britain was at war – and his tem- per was not improved by gout! So do we all view the world with such cynicism? As a lad I well remember the groans of my neighbours as summer approached and the annual influx of buckets and spades on our Dorset beach drew near. No nod to the economic benefits brought to the town! Many people benefited from the invasion and my own parents regularly hosted visitors in our `front rooms’ and who became lifelong friends. Yet I still to this day think of such incomers as `grockles’ and wince at the thought of their intrusion. Totally irrational! And how does Kent fare in the opinion stakes? You recall William Cobbett’s com- ment on the villainous people of Deal? Writing in 1823 in his `Rural Rides’ he found the town “full of filthy looking people” and he didn’t think much of the military presence in the place either! Any connection I wonder with the early days of east Kent and the settlement of the land east and south of the Medway by the Jutes? They were after all of Teutonic origin – which may explain something! Nowadays we (you) think of east Kent as the fiefdom of the Men (or Maids) of Kent. One pundit – the Reverend Samuel Pegge in 1735 – had this to say. “Some say that a Man of Kent is a term of high honour while a Kentish Man denotes but an ordinary person.” I am selective in my quotes but there you are – it’s all on the Internet! And what of Cornwall, I hear you cry? Well, we incomers are known as `emmets’. We feel no pain but await assimilation in due course! Tony Burt * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Caring about the Community - Do You? Do you know or even care that residents who live on the Balmoral side of the village and have walking difficulties are cut off from Upper Street and facilities on that side of the village. I have lived in Kingsdown for 34 years and have supported the Post Office, Butcher and Newsagent & the Village Hall activities. Three years ago I was involved in an accident resulting in a total hip replacement and can now no longer risk walking to the other side of the village. The Rise is far too dangerous with today's traffic, Arnold’s Alley is so danger- ous for walking due to roots of trees breaking up the footpath and the pot holes etc on St James’s a possible death trap. I raised this problem at the neighbourhood plan for Kingsdown meeting some weeks ago but haven’t seen any evidence of a response so far. Does anybody else feel the same and should the Parish Council be doing something about this? Pam Hough 31

32 Loose Fibres craft club. Date of the next meetings, Wednesday 11th & 25th Sept. 9:30am to 12:30pm At Ripple Village Hall

It's a busy time of the year, what with looking after children, tending the garden and going on holiday, so club members have had to fit in coming to the club when they can. Clare and I are both spin- ners and we have been out and about doing demonstrations and getting the word out about the club (we are always pleased to welcome new members). Three of our Loose Fibre folk are members of the Sophie lace makers’ group and they invited us to their fund raising event (for the Air Ambulance) to demonstrate our spinning and show some of the things we had made. We had a lovely day and met lots of craft minded people. We were also invited along to the Northbourne Fete and the Northbourne Garden Party. These two events were held outside and luckily we had good weather. It's a real pleasure to be outside on a lovely day, treadling away, and turning fleece into yarn. It's amazing how many people told us they have a spinning wheel, but never use it! We hope we inspired some of them to get going and create beautiful yarn. Poor old wheels just sitting there, gathering dust, what a shame! In October we will be off to find more inspiration at the Knitting & Stitching Show in London. Some of our members along with friends and family will be going by minibus to Alexandra Palace; we are all looking forward to a great day out. Rita

Here at Glendale we are looking for some volunteer Companions to spend some time visiting our residents who may not have friends or relatives nearby or in some cases at all. We need volunteers who would be happy to come along and chat with someone for an hour or so each week in order to improve our residents’ wellbeing. If you have any spare time and enjoy a chat and a cup of tea please call 01304 363 449 and speak to Lisa or Carole. Alternatively if you have any entertainment skills we would also be interested in hearing from you. 40
