Legislative Report 11/4/2019 BALLOT ISSUES While the federal government does provide protections against foreign entities gaining control of critical infrastructure in Ohio and across the U.S., the Buckeye State should adopt a constitutional amendment to better protect its power plants, electric transmission lines, oil and gas pipelines and water treatment plants, Reps. Don Manning (R-New Middletown) and Jamie Callender (R-Concord) said Wednesday. Speaking to the House Energy and Natural Resources Committee during the panel's first hearing on HJR2, Manning said they have been "troubled by the growing trend of foreign entities acquiring or financing some of our country's most critical infrastructure," so they'd like to place the "Ohio Critical Infrastructure Protection Amendment" (OCIPA) on the November 2020 ballot. FirstEnergy Solutions (FES) says the state must quash the referendum campaign against HB6 (Callender-Wilkin) energy subsidies once and for all or risk losing its two nuclear power plants and their half billion dollars in annual gross domestic product (GDP). The company lodged a second request this week for expedited briefings in State ex rel. FES v. Ohioans Against Corporate Bailouts after its first attempt failed in early September. The Ohio Supreme Court answered Thursday by ordering the campaign and Secretary of State Frank LaRose to respond to FirstEnergy's "new exigencies" no later than Tuesday, Nov. 5. BUSINESS/CORPORATE Cleveland will be the home of the new Americas headquarters for the London Stock Exchange's ELITE initiative and the site of its "Global ELITE Day 2020" conference next year, according to a Monday announcement.

Vol. 1 Issue 1 Spring 2016 Published by the Ohio State Bar Association Animal Law Committee Animal Law News An elephant’s journey: How the laws and regulations affecting zoos have evolved leading to the modern zoo If we look back 60 years, which is the average lifespan of an African Elephant, we can witness the significant changes which have occurred in the approach to animal welfare at zoos. There are numerous regulations with which zoos must comply; however, more importantly, rigorous industry accreditation standards have been birthed, driving many zoos in a “race to the top” for excellence in animal care. Our country’s first approach to regulating zoos focused on the control of disease. From the late 1800s to the early 1900s, the Animal Quarantine Laws1 and the Lacey Act2 empowered the president and the Department of the Interior, respectively, to regulate the importation of animals that would threaten domestic animals or humans from disease or other harmful effects. • Bike Election Guide 2018 FINAL
VOTER INFORMATION November 6, 2018 General Election Day. Polls are open from 6:30AM until 7:30PM. How Bicyclists Guide to Voting is compiled: The Bike Miami Valley Regional Advocacy Committee has published the 3rd Voters Guide to provide a forum for candidates to discuss issues of walking, bicycling, and street or trail use. Bicycling is a legal form of transportation in Ohio and has the same rules and rights to the roads as any other vehicle. This Guide also highlights information that can help an everyday recreational bicyclists, a dedicated multi-modal user or a daily cycling commuter get insight to candidates’ political viewpoints, I BIKE, I WALK, opinions, and personal experiences with bicycling. Letters with four questions were sent to candidates in contested races within the Miami Valley area (counties that are I VOTE! represented in Bike Miami Valley’s regional membership base). Candidate responses have been printed to fit formatting. If a candidate did not respond, NO REPLY indicates the Election 2018 candidate either did not respond or did not meet the stated deadline. In each office, an asterisks (*) notes the incumbent candidates only in the first question, underneath how Bicyclists Guide to Voting many candidates a voter can select on the ballot. Bike Miami Valley does not endorse or support views of any candidate or political in Clark, Greene, Miami & party. Nor does Bike Miami Valley assume responsibility for the content of any Montgomery Counties candidate’s reply. takes that confusion and chaos would ensure that roads are repaired away. People aren’t fighting over the when needed, updated, and designed same space then.
