It is a great pleasure for me to invite you all to take part in our next European Championships, which will be held in beautiful Ankara (capitol of Turkey) from 28 th October to 3 rd November 2012. Turkish Kickboxing Federation, leaded by Mr. Salim Kayici, is one of the most active organizations in WAKO, which have developed enormously in the past few years both in quality and in figures. They have more than 100.000 members in their organization and many of their fighters won prestigious medals in our Continental and World Championships in the different styles. That’s a reality nobody can deny and it states the good structure, the good organization of the Turkish Kickboxing Federation since there cannot be success without true merit. But there are other good reasons to go to Turkey: the fact that the continental championships in Ankara is a must for all those competitors in Low Kick wishing to qualify for the World Combat Games in St. Petersburg (Russia) in October 2013. To win in the selected weight classes will grant medalists the certainty of participation and I am sure that will also grant our next Championships a special aura and will create great performances from our fighters.
The second good reason, of course, is to know a country, Turkey, which is a perfect synthesis of East and West cultures. Everybody will have the chance to appreciate the two aspects of Turkey’s everyday life: a mixture of old traditions and modern society, together with a particular disposition and warmness towards guests. I am sure that the Turkish Kickboxing Federation will make a very good job in promoting our European Championships and everybody will make a fantastic experience to bring back home. Hoping to see you all in Ankara very soon, best regards.

WELCOME TO THE 2012 ANKARA, WAKO EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS!
It is such a privilege to welcome all of you to our wonderful homeland of Turkey. We are very honored to be able to host the 2012 WAKO European Championships for Light Contact, Low Kick, and K1 Rules.
I first want to thank our World Association of Kickboxing Organizations President and my friend, Dr. Ennio Falsoni for allowing our Federation and our Country the honor of hosting these Championships. We have worked very hard to put together a successful Championship for each of you.
This WAKO European Championship will also serve as the “Qualification Tournament” for the World Combat Games to be held in St. Petersburg, Russia in 2013.
We hope that you will have time to take in some of the many sights and historical places in our country while you are here. You will find Turkey to be full of all the modernism of the world and yet see that in some places it still holds on to its older traditions. Turkey is a place where East meets West, and is known as the bridge between two continents (Europe and Asia); you will find elements of both here. I hope that these Championships will be a place that continues to unite us all in this great sport of kickboxing!
May you experience the truest aspects of Turkish Hospitality as you stay here for these Championships! I wish you all the very best and the most success!

ANKARA
As you rise above the banks of the Enguri Su climbing the rather steep incline, you finally arrive in the city of Ankara the capital and the second largest population in Turkey. Despite the modernization that has occurred over the past fe w decades, it is still dotted with reminders of its past history. Today, Ankara is fil led with a bustling nightlife , consulates, government and state houses, military bases, and universities just like any major metropolitan area. There are so many structures that remind you where Ankara had its place in ancient and past history. Byzantine, Hellenistic, Hittite, Ottoman , Phrygian, and Roman castles as well as other ruins and structures from these civilizations still adorn the surrounding landscape. So you can be sure that Ankara has held a very prominent place in past history. Here is a listi ng of some of the more popular visitor’s delights in Ankara .
Ankara , Turkey's capital city , is important to diplomats and bureaucrats, and has a few significant sights for visitors. Today this city at an altitude of 938 meters (3077 feet) is a sprawling metropolis of five million people.
Before the Turkish War of Independence brought Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his generals to Ankara as a wartime command post, Ankara was a small town with a Roman citadel on a high hill and a brisk trade in Angora wool , the long, fine hair of the Angora goat.
After Atatürk proclaimed Ankara to be the capital of the Turkish Republic’s new capital, it began to grow. After WWII, a constant influx of villagers from the countryside in search of a better life brought Ankara explosive growth. The city now sprawls through valleys and across hills in every direction, but on your visit you need only be concerned with a few specific areas.
Ankara's interesting sights such as the citadel, Museum of Anatolian Civilizations , Anıtkabir (Atatürk Mausoleum) and Roman ruins will give you a small taste of s ome of Turkey’s vast sites. Beyond this city is some of the most amazing sights you will see both old and new! We encourage you to take some time and explore our wonderful country!

Read More :The Lonely Planet TRANSPORTATION: Esenboğa International Airport
This airport has been in operation since 1955. It is located 28 km (17 mi) northeast of Ankara, the capital city of Turkey. On 17 June 2009, Esenboğa International Airport was awarded the best airport in Europe by ACI Europe (Airport Council International) in Manchester.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION:
METRO/SUBWAY
Ankara has two subway (underground) train lines so far:
The Ankara Metro M1 Line runs northwest southeast between the central Kızılay Square and the northeastern suburb of Batıkent.
The Ankaray A1 Line runs east west between A TĐ, the main bus terminal in the west and Dikimevi in the east.
Payment is by paper fare tickets with magnetic stripes. The tickets are valid on both the Metro and Ankaray lines. You buy the tickets in the metro stations. These are also useable on the Buses.
Insert the ticket in the machine at the turnstile, wait until it pops out again, take your ticket and pass through the turnstile. Your ticket is not checked at the end of your trip.
It's a bit confusing to have only one line named Metro , when in fact both lines are part of the same "metro" system, but so it is.

**The Ulus Metro station is the closest stop to the Ankara Arena Tournament Sports Center.
Dolmu Dolmu is a special service found only in Turkey. This is a collective taxi, which follows specific routes. It may be a car or a minibus. Each passenger pays according to the distance traveled and can get off at specific or requested stops. In order to get off, the passenger need only say, " inecek var " meaning “someone to get off here” and the dolmu will stop. The municipality fixes the relatively cheap fares. This is a very practical means of transportation and can be cheaper than a taxi. You pay the fee to the driver (2 TL per person).
Bus (Otobüs) Buses are cheap, however especially at peak times they are very crowded and they're not comfortable. There are two types of buses in Ankara servicing the whole the city. The municipality runs One and these are called Belediye Otobüsü. These buses are either red or blue and dark blue striped. Since electronic tickets are required for traveling with these buses the tickets should be bought in advance. They are sold in minimum usage of five in the Metro Station. The second type of bus is privately run Halk Otobüsü, which are green or blue. Tickets are not welcome on these buses and only cash is accepted. However the price is the same (2 TL one way).
Taxi (Taksi) Taxis are numerous in all Turkish cities and are recognizable by their yellow color and word taksi on top of the car. All taxis have the letter T in their license plates. The fare shown on the meter reads according to distance traveled. The ride will start at 2.5 TL, and the rate is 2.1 TL per kilometer. Here are a few useful sayings that might come in handy: Stop here burada durun; Left sol, Right sağ; Turn on the meter taksimetreyi çalı tırın; Wait please lütfen bekleyin; Wait here burada bekleyin.

Atatürk Mausoleum (Anıtkabir)
Address: Anittepe, Ankara, Turkey, TR This fine memorial complex built in 1944 commemorates the Turkish founder, Ataturk. Known locally as the Anitkabir, the Ataturk Mausoleum is a stark yet grand and imposing attraction, located atop a series of steps and featuring a huge mosaic courtyard, together with an exceptionally beautiful gold leaf clad interior. The Changing of the Guard ceremony is well worth a look, as is the recent War of Independence Museum, which encircles the courtyard at its lower level. A gift shop is also onsite.
Open: Tuesday to Sunday 09:00 to 17:00 Admission: free
Ankara Citadel (Hisar Ankara Kalesi)
Located atop a hill in the heart of Ankara, the Ankara Citadel, or castle, serves as one of the most recognizable symbol's of Turkey's capital. Visiting the citadel is more than just seeing the impressive structure, with its 14-16 m (46-53 ft) high walls. A journey inside the citadel also provides you with a look at what ancient Turkey might have looked like.
The structures within and around the castle serve as some of the oldest authentic examples of traditional Turkish architecture. Although no one know for sure exactly how old the citadel is, its foundations were thought to have been laid by Galatians nearly 3,000 years ago. Inside the citadel, many of the old houses have been restored and converted into restaurants, creating the atmosphere of an ancient Anatolian village. The local people still live as if in a traditional Turkish town. As you wander along the narrow winding streets, you'll often see women beating and sorting through skeins of wool.
Address: Ulus, Ankara, Turkey, TR Open: daily - 24 hours Admission: free Museum of the War of Independence (Kurtulu Sava ı Müzesi)
This museum has a collection of military photographs and documents, housed in Turkey's first parliament (the Republican Grand National Assembly held early sessions here). The latter was the assembly's second headquarters, and features exhibits on the republic's beginnings.

Talat Pasa Boulevard, Ankara, Turkey
Around the walls are photographs of Atatürk's funeral. The collection is superb, with displays covering henna ceremonies, Anatolian jewelry, rug making, Seljuk ceramics, early-15th-century doors and (opposite the anxious-looking mannequins in the circumcision display) coffee. Also of interest are the calligraphy and manuscript collections of Besim Atalay, who translated the Quran into Kurdish.

The mosque as it stands today shows the architectural characteristics of late 17th century and 18th century mosques. The ceiling is made of ornamental wood, and floral and plant motifs can be found throughout.
Temple of Augustus and Rome (Tarihi Roma Kalıntıları)
Address: Ulus, Ankara, Turkey, TR
Although closed to the public due to its state of disrepair, the Temple of Augustus and Rome, built in 10 AD by the Galatians, retains the best- preserved copy of the Deeds of Deified Augustus (Res Gestae Divi Augusti), which detail the Roman Empire. The Romans revamped the temple in the 2nd century although nearly 2,000 years of weather and seismic activity have taken their toll on this rather ancient attraction. Plans to restore the temple are underway.
Open: Daily Admission: view from exterior only.
Roman Baths (Roma Hamamı)
The sprawling ruins of these 3rd-century baths are 400m north of Ulus Meydanı. The layout of the baths is clearly visible; look for the standard Roman apoditerium (dressing room), frigidarium (cold room), tepidarium (warm room) and caldarium (hot room). A Byzantine tomb and Phrygian remains have also been found here. More excavations are in the pipelines.
