    Enriching Now with Then: Connecting Nursing Home Residents and Staff Through Oral History Mike Payne has a master’s degree in Gerontological Studies from Miami University and a B.A. in English Literature from The Ohio State University. Prior to working for Scripps, he served as a general assignment reporter for a rural daily newspaper and was a writer, photographer and editor in the communications division of the Ohio Department of Aging (ODA) for 11 years. Mike’s oral histories of older Ohioans appeared in ODA’s quarterly magazine, Ohio’s Heritage, between 1995 and 2000. He is the author of “A Brief History of Aging Services in America,” a training manual for the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (n4a) and his other gerontological interests include senior-service property-tax levies and nursing home reform. We were the products of war-weary parents who themselves had been children of the Depression era. But the end of the war signaled a period of economic growth and development that put the United States on track to be the world’s richest and most powerful nation. We grew up in a time of plenty and our parents continued to expand our families for almost two more decades. Thus we became the “baby boomers” – a term first seen in an article in the Washington Post in 1970 – and therefore we were named and classified. We had power from the get-go, in terms of sheer numbers, wealth, and educational achievement. We have been described as a swallowed pig moving through a boa constrictor, changing the shape and perspective of the host. Our generation was seen as living in a Norman Rockwell world. But that image was deceptive.
