Custer's next to the last StandBy TeamjjI've not seen a book where Custer lived and then became president. In cement his place in history, Custer and his scheming wife conspired to start a war with Spain over Cuba. Unfortunately, that last time the army had been updated was at the end of the Civil War. And, the Navy,,, what navy??? Great read as always from Mr. Conroy and I look forward to his next one. One of the things about his books I really like is that they END. None of this zillion more books to continue the story. Keep 'em coming, Mr. Conroy. Love your work.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Bad alternate historyBy No BS guyCertainly the weakest of the Robert Conroy books I read. Alternate history stories are "what ifs?", Some "what ifs?" could easily have happened. Others are just silly. In this story, "what if Custer's men brought up the Gatling guns at the battle of the Little Big Horn"? Reasonable question. Then it goes sideways. What if Custer survived then became a national hero and was elected President? What if he decided to go down in history as a great president by launching the Spanish American War two decades earlier? What if he then blundered into the war zone and was captured by the enemy? What if Martians then landed and had to fight Godzilla? OK, the last one was made up, but the whole premise of the book was really silly. Wanted to like this book. Couldn't!3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I love Conroy's workBy Greg HopperI love Conroy's work, but I suspect he was still editing or writing this when he sadly passed away. The ending feels rushed and a little too pat. The setup is grand as Custer BS's his way into the White House and then needs to get a war going to look good. The characters are all well drawn, especially the journalist and the nurse, and the action is first rate. And nary a mention of the quality of cigarettes during wartime, (yeah, I'm looking at you Harry Turtledove) it's a good ride, but I'm going to miss Conroy's stuff from here on out. NATIONALLY BEST-SELLING AUTHOR. A world where Custer survives Little Bighorn and becomes president goes seriously awry.Following his unlikely but decisive (and immensely popular) 1876 victory over Sitting Bull and the Sioux at the Little Big Horn, George Armstrong Custer is propelled into the White House in 1880.Two years later, he finds himself bored and seeks new worlds to conquer. He and his wife Libbie fixate on Spain’s decaying empire as his source for immortality. What President Custer doesn’t quite comprehend is that the U.S. military isn’t up to such a venture. When a group of Americans on a ship headed for Cuba is massacred, war becomes inevitable—and unless calmer, patriotic citizens and soldiers can find a way to avoid debacle, this war may be America's last stand! About the AuthorRobert Conroy is the author a run of hugely popular alternate history novels, including Himmler’s War and Rising Sun for Baen Books. His 1942, which is set within a Japanese conquest of Hawaii, won the prestigious Sidewise Award for alternate histories. Conroy has written for Military History magazine and has traveled extensively in Europe where he’s taken a special interest in battlefields, historical collections, and castles. After a first career in business, Conroy has turned his lifelong passion for writing and military history into an immensely satisfying new occupation. He is married, lives in southeastern Michigan, and, when not writing, teaches business and economic history at a local college.
