Scobie on I'm Not There
I’M NOT THERE (1956-2007) Stephen Scobie Je est un autre—Arthur Rimbaud I’m Not There (2007) In this autumn season of 2007, I can see that I am going to be thinking a lot about the Bob Dylan song known as “I’m Not There (1956).” At least, that is the title given to it on most of its early, bootleg appearances. Now that it has finally been officially released, the sub-title date has been dropped—which is a pity (since it added an element of mystery to the song) but also understandable (since no good explanation of the date has ever been given). “I’m Not There” is perhaps the ultimate Dylan bootleg, and has always been a subject for cult idealization as the most obscure of Dylan’s “lost” songs: a major master- piece that almost no one knows, and which indeed seems to conspire actively against being known. Now, it has become the title of Todd Haynes’s movie I’m Not There, “inspired by the music and many lives of Bob Dylan”—“many” being the operative word. The film is already famous for casting six different actors to play aspects of Dylan at different points in his career. If this strategy is a gimmick, it is a successful one: the film is generating vast amounts of advance publicity, much of it based on the photographs of Cate Blanchett looking, uncannily and androgynously, like 1966 Bob. The film is not due for North American release until late November, though it has played in prestigious festivals like Toronto, New York, and Venice. -
And Dylan's Romanticism
“Isis” and Dylan’s Romanticism --John Hinchey I want to talk mainly about “Isis,” a song Dylan co-wrote with Off Broadway director Jacques Levy.1 “Isis” was the first of several songs that Dylan wrote with Levy during the summer of 1975, and this fruitful col- laboration yielded seven of the nine songs released at the end of that year on Desire. I’ve chosen “Isis” mainly because it’s an interesting and entertaining song in its own right, but also because it offers a useful vantage point for considering Dylan’s Romanticism, an abiding element in his artistic tem- perament that doesn’t get nearly as much attention as you’d think it would. Adventure, mystery, discovery, renewal, the vista of inexhaustible pos- sibility--these are the hallmarks of Romance. Its essence is an aspiration for a world without bounds, a vision of a life of unlimited possibility. “Forever Young” is a quintessentially Romantic idea, as is the popular conception of Heaven. Romanticism, you could say, is the impulse to find Heaven on Earth. It can sound ridiculous when you state it flat out this way, but al- 1 This is a slightly revised version of a paper presented at “A Series of Interpretations of Bob Dylan's Lyrical Works,” a conference hosted by the Dartmouth College English Department, August 11-13, 2006. Quotations of Dylan's lyrics are from the original official recordings, unless otherwise noted. When quoting lines extensively, I revert to the principle I used in Like a Complete Unknown (Ann Arbor: Stealing Home Press, 2002): “I’ve had to determine the ‘spaces between words’ for myself. -

Judas! from Inside A Prune Hello again folks and welcome to issue 7. Seasons come and seasons go, years pass, decades even; a millennium date change has even happened by and still the not-to-be- called-never-ending-tour, never ending tour rolls by. When this issue hits your door- mats Bob will be mid-European tour. We at Judas! central are off to see two shows in Sweden and participate in the Stockholm convention - and hope to see as many of you there as possible - before the UK tour starts, a set of dates made much more attractive by the later additions of Hammersmith and Brixton. Ah, what memories to be rekindled and hopefully new ones to savour too. Inside these pages we bring you another collection of articles that we trust you will enjoy. Again we have aimed for a balance between well known names and newcomers or relative newcomers. This is something we can only maintain if new writers keep coming forward. There’s a plea elsewhere in these pages for photographs, the same goes for new material. A few out there (you know who you are) have started articles, please keep at them, the more new writing blood in the Dylan fanzine world the better as far as I am concerned. Issue Eight will hopefully feature one or more of these, plus articles by established names. Manuel Vardavas’s bootleg column will be back again (presuming something worthy of discussion is released, that is) and it is quite likely we will be taking an in- depth look at SACD and bootleg DVDs from a ‘technology-and-its-impact-on-your- Dylan-entertainment’ standpoint. -

From Inside a Prune
Judas! from Inside A Prune Hello again and a very warm welcome to Judas! issue 14.We have a variety of treats lined up for you. John Hinchey has progressed on to that album to top all albums, Blood on the Tracks; Izzy Young, whose back pages we will continue to feature in later issues, has sent us a piece fresh from his pen; Padraig Hanratty provides us with another Wilbury Twist; Gerry Barrett at remarkably short notice read and reviewed Greil Marcus’s Like A Rolling Stone; Bob Dylan At The Crossroads and left me jealous at his ability to do so in such a cogent manner; while Martin Van Hees provides more meat and entertainment in his philosoph- ical reflection on ‘John Brown’than I have ever found in the song itself.Oh yes,and the first part of my article on Bob Dylan and traditional Scottish music is also featured. A recent Isis article detailing the history of Dylan fanzines very kindly and pleasingly described my previous effort,Homer, the slut as ‘a gem of a fanzine’.This led to some people asking me for back copies but, sadly, I do not have any of those. (Indeed I don’t even have a complete set myself, due to some of the master copies not being cared for properly. On being informed of this said enquirers then suggested reprinting parts of Homer, the slut in Judas! I was reluctant to do this for two reasons.Firstly,a great deal of the attraction of Homer, the slut was in its idiosyncratic nature and its reflection of what was happening in the Dylan world at that time.To pick out articles that could fit into Judas!’s remit and style will not give an accurate impression of the previous ‘zine. -
