[1] The original title was Come Soft, but changed en route to becoming a hit of it. Bob Reisdorf, the owner of Dolphin Records, which in 1960 switched to Dolton Records, was responsible for changing the title. He thought that Come Softly could be very obvious and considered distorted, so he had changed it to Come Gently to Me. The title phrase never appears in the song's lyrics. Recording the song at home, the group sang it a cappella with the rhythmic flick of the keys to Troxel's car. The film was then sent to Los Angeles, where the sparse instrumental accompaniment was added, including an acoustic guitar played by Bonnie Guitar, herself a successful singer-songwriter (Dark Moon) and Reisdorf's in-house record producer. Released in 1959, the single reached #1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in April. Oh, God, I'm so sorry. Mercy released a version of the song on their 1969 album, Love Can Make You Happy[6] and The New Seekers, the version of which reached #95 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #20 on the British charts in 1972-73. [7] Brenton Wood titled his 1977 album, Come Softly, after the song. [8] A cover version performed by Roches is repeated several times on the soundtrack of the film Crossing Delancey. [9] Buck Dharma of Öyster's Blue Cult covered the song on his 1982 solo album, Level Out. [10] Popular Culture The song was featured in the film and soundtrack of Stand by Me. This song is used in the opening scene of the film Trailer of Dead Silence. [11] Included in the closing credits of the comic BBC2 Roger and Val have just gotten in. "Crossing Delancey" makes the mistake of creating characters who are interesting enough to make us care for them - and then denying them freedom of speech. The people in this movie have intelligence in their eyes, but their words are defined by the requirements of formula comedy. If this had been a European film, the same plot would have been populated with adults, and the results might have been magical. The film tells the story of Isabella (Amy Irving), a Jewish girl from New York, in her early 30s, who works for a literary bookstore. In her work she gets to meet lots of interesting people - mad poets, Bohemian book lovers, literary lions - and she considers herself to be part of the scene. She does not quite understand, or admit, that many of the shaggy intellectual giants she meets are attracted, not by her mind, but by her beauty. She has not fully accepted the fact that some men, on one level or another, are thinking of sex when they talk to a pretty girl, no matter how they may flatter her intelligence. As the movie opens, Isabella is offered a job as the personal secretary of a self-important European poet (Jeroen Krabbe). This is the last job she needs. It is instantly obvious to the audience that her duties will be more personal than secretarial. Meanwhile, Isabella's grandmother (Reizl Bozyk), known as "Bubbie," is concerned for her welfare. Why doesn't this nice young lady have a husband and a few babies? She engages the services of a matchmaker (Sylvia Miles), who produces a prime matrimonial candidate: Sam, the pickle man, who has inherited his father's pickle store on the Lower East Side.

    Joan Micklin Silver, Director of ‘Crossing Delancey,ʼ Dies at 85 She broke barriers for women, directing seven feature films, including “Hester Street” and “Between the Lines,” as well as TV movies. Joan Micklin Silver in the late 1970s while filming an adaptation of the Ann Beattie novel “Chilly Scenes of Winter.” She had a love-hate relationship with movie studios.United Artists, via Photofest Joan Micklin Silver, the filmmaker whose first feature, “Hester Street,” expanded the marketplace for American independent film and broke barriers for women in directing, died on Thursday at her home in Manhattan. She was 85. Her daughter Claudia Silver said the cause was vascular dementia. Ms. Silver wrote and directed “Hester Street” (1975), the story of a young Jewish immigrant couple from Russia on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the 1890s. It was a personal effort, a low-budget 34-day location shoot, that became a family project. Studios said the story was too narrowly and historically ethnic. For one thing, much of the film, in black and white, was in Yiddish with English subtitles. “Nobody wanted to release it,” Ms. Silver recalled in a visual history interview for the Directors Guild of America in 2005. “The only offer was to release it on 16 to the synagogue market,” she added, referring to 16-millimeter film. Ms. Silverʼs husband, Raphael D. Silver, a commercial real estate developer, stepped in to finance, produce and even distribute the film after selling it to some international markets while attending the Cannes Film Festival. “Hester Street” opened at the Plaza Theater in Manhattan in October 1975, then in theaters nationwide, and soon earned $5 million (about $25 million today), almost 14 times its $370,000 budget.

The mark of circumcision has served as the rhetorical ground upon which much negative stereotyping--especially anti-Judaic and/or anti-Semitic sentiment--has been fostered. The metaphor of circumcision, in seeming contrast, has designated an elect in both religious and secular modes of exegesis. She was 85. Silver died from vascular dementia Thursday at her home in New York, her daughter Claudia Silver told The Associated Press. She used a combination of talent, fortitude and luck to create 1975’s “Hester Street,” her fi rst feature, re- leased when she was 40 years old. “Joan Micklin Silver was one of the most coura- geous artists I ever knew,” Carol Kane, who was nominated for a best actress Academy Award for her role in “Hester Street,” said in a statement to the AP. “She knew she could prevail at a time when women were not being taken seriously as fi lm directors.” A black-and-white period piece partly in Yiddish about a family of Jewish immigrants attempting to assimilate in New York, the fi lm became an unlikely triumph after Silver fought to make it. Bergstrom, Chair This dissertation examines the relationship between the feminist movement and Hollywood during the 1970s, specifically as it impacted the hiring practices and creative output of women directors working in the film industry. Due to the activism of the feminist movement, in particular the feminist reform efforts of the Women’s Committees of Hollywood’s professional guilds—the Directors Guild, the Screen Actors Guild, and the Writers Guild—the number of women directors in 1970s Hollywood began to increase compared to previous decades. From the mid-1930s till the mid-1960s, only two women filmmakers had careers as directors in Hollywood: Dorothy Arzner and Ida Lupino. This research reveals that between 1966 and 1980 there were at least fifteen women making movies in the commercial film industry: Karen Arthur, Anne Bancroft, Joan Darling, Lee Grant, Barbara Loden, Elaine May, Barbara Peeters, Joan Rivers, ii Stephanie Rothman, Beverly Sebastian, Joan Micklin Silver, Joan Tewkesbury, Jane Wagner, Nancy Walker, and Claudia Weill.

    RELIGION AND FILM ‘The developing field of religion and film is very new and encourages a wide range of different interests and approaches, as Melanie Wright rightly acknowledges in this substantial contribution to film and religion studies. The whole area has not yet developed very far, is something of a hodge-podge, and to a certain degree we do not yet know what we are doing. By selecting a particular systematic approach to religion and film – which incorporates an analysis of narrative, style, content and reception – Wright makes a great step forward for the whole field. Her cultural studies approach to the topic proposes a clearly defined solution to the subject’s fragmentariness: a challenge that is long overdue.
