Father Andrew Heiman Pastor Father Matt Siegman Parochial Vicar The Twenty Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday, August 30, 2020 In a recent time of prayer, I came across an excerpt from a homily by St. John PASTOR’S Chrysotom about repentance. The overall homily spoke about repentance and how CORNER repentance leads a person to heaven. One part of the homily offered five helpful ways to grow in repentance which I would like to share with you. The first helpful way to greater repentance that St. Chrysostom offers is the condemnation of sins. He instructs us to condemn the sins each of us has committed. By condemning our sins will excuse us in from of the Lord. This is reflected in the scripture passage of which states, “Tell your sins, and you will be acquitted,” and the Psalm that says: “I said ‘I will bear witness against myself before the Lord,” and you forgave the guilt of my sin.” St. Chrysostom instructs us to “Stir up your own conscience to be your accuser – so that when you come before the judgement-seat of the Lord no-one will rise up to accuse you.” Another way to grow in repentance St. John states is “to forget the harm done to us by our enemies, to master our anger, and to forgive sins.” By seeking to forgive others, our own sins against the Lord will be forgiven. for the Lord instructs us, “If you forgive others their failings, your Heavenly Father will forgive you yours.” Prayer and almsgiving are the third and fourth ways to grow in repentance. St. Chrysostom explains that prayer which is fervent, sincere, focused, and flowing from the depths of our heart, opens us to God’s grace and mercy. Almsgiving, those loving sacrifices we offer, brings repentance, for the Apostle Peter states, “Above all hold unfailing your love for one another, since love covers a multitude of sins.” St. John says that “almsgiving has great power.” The final way for repentance to grow is to act with humility. This helpful way, St. John says, is effective in depriving sin of its substance. Jesus offered the parable of the Publican, who had no good deeds to speak of. In place of good deeds he offered humility, praying “Lord, have mercy on me a sinner,” and the huge burden of his sins fell away.

Let us heed the wisdom of St. and apply these ways of repentance to heal our wounds. We should not be idle, but every day advance in growth of repentance through condemnation of sin, forgiving the sins of others, prayer, almsgiving, and humility. These ways are the path to Heaven and deeper communion with the Trinity. For St. John says, “repentance will bring us to the glory of Christ’s kingdom, and receive its eternal joys through the grace, mercy and kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ.” In the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Fr. Andrew Heiman

Page 5 Glory & Praise UPDATE AUGUST 30, 2020

To those who so generously gave to support Blessed Sacrament’s Glory & Praise initiative, we are truly grateful. We closed our church on January 6th this year, with demolition and construction commencing that same day. Since the work was completed on April 9th - three weeks ahead of schedule - we have been amazed and awestruck at the transformation.

We now enjoy a glorious new space with beautiful pendant lights that brightly illuminate our worship, a majestic coffered ceiling, and new black tile flooring that defines and draws the eye to our altar. It’s hard to remember the way it all looked before! Now we await the arrival of our beautiful refurbished organ. Although work on it was delayed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we expect its installation to be completed by the end of September.

When we enter the church now, each of us is struck by the transformation. But can you imagine how those who had a hand in the design and construction must feel? Our project was headed up by several Blessed Sacrament parishioners - Matt Schindler of WDM Architects; Dennis Kerschen, president of The Law Company; and Dan Alcala, recently retired Project Manager from The Law Company.

Today, we’d like to share Dennis's thoughts on the project.

Q & A with Dennis Kerschen, President, The Law Company, Inc.

Q: Please share your history/story with Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. A: We came to Blessed Sacrament in October of 2014. We had been parishioners at the Church of the Magdalen, however one of our children was struggling in school and we needed to find an environment and structure that would help him with his learning. Father Jirak and Dan Dester assured us that Blessed Sacrament and the staff in the Resource room would be able to help our son. They certainly did that as our son will enter Kapaun Mt. Carmel this fall.

Q: Describe how this project was different from other projects since you are so personally connected to Blessed Sacrament. A: The renovation of the church is different from most of our projects because of the personal connection we have to the church as both parishioners and as stewards. It is very rare to be part of a project like this where you can be part of increasing the beauty your spiritual home.

Q: What did you like most about this project? A: One of the things I really enjoyed in working on this project was the opportunity to work closely with Matt Schindler with WDM, Father Drew, and the parish staff. Having a group of us that are parishioners working together to bring this project to fruition was very rewarding and the willingness of all the team to collaborate on ways to improve the project made this a very special project. Q: What did you find most challenging about this project? A: There were many challenging aspects of this project. First was the fact we were working nearly 40 feet in the air. Also challenging was the fact that we performed a significant amount of the work with Law Company employees. We performed the demolition, all the wood trim work, and the removal and replacement of the pews with our personnel. Last, the schedule was a challenge as the project was planned to be completed in late May. However our team, through exceptional planning and effort, was able to complete the project in time for the . Q: Who would you like to recognize? A: We had an exceptional team that was able to successfully THE CHURCH OF THE complete this project: Dan Alcala - Project Manager and also a parishioner; Mike Schule - Project LESSED Superintendent; Daniel Sanchez - Carpenter Foreman; Nathan Rausch - Carpenter Foreman; and. SACRAMENT Shawn Grisamore – Director of Preconstruction Services. Thank you Dennis, for your fabulous work. I personally would like to offer my gratitude to you for your stewardship in providing your time and talent on this project. You truly are a faithful servant of the Lord." Father Drew

To surrender to Christ is a deep spiritual trust in which everything is given to our Lord and resisting the lie that we are self-sufficient. Surrendering is an act of abandonment that places into the heart of Jesus our past, present, and future. It is a spiritual trust in the truth that God is Good and wants to direct you to the fullness of His goodness. We just need to give up all control and let our Lord direct us.

To make a first step toward this, please join Father Drew for this 3 hour “Surrender Novena” Retreat. To learn more or register for a session, please contact the parish office at 316-682-4557 or email [email protected]

News from Blessed Sacrament Catholic School, our parish’s largest ministry. August 2020 In late July, the Diocese rolled out the Re-entry plan, Forward with Hope. This plan is intended to meet the ever changing and uncertain learning environment. We will continue to be guided by our desire to keep our families safe, to minister to the spiritual and mental health of our community and to provide an excellent Catholic education.

The following measures will be put into place for the safety of students and staff:

Health contract - Parents will sign an agreement to such matters as taking morning temperature, reporting exposure, symptoms, etc.; Temperature check – all students will have temperature check before entering building. Handwashing/sanitizing; Masks; Calling in sick children – parents will be required to share symptoms. Positive tests must be reported; Report travel anywhere on the quarantine list

St. Project- Blessed Sacrament families, Arnold, principal, is calling on your help to make this a great year! We wish we had an unlimited budget to get everything you wanted! Joel is hoping we will have several families take us up on this fun opportunity for stewardship in action to create, construct or donate items needed.
