Annual Report SAC 2018 4 Foreword by Chris Watts Consul General of Switzerland to Dubai

Dear members of the Swiss Aerospace Cluster, For the UAE specifically, the contribution of the aviation sector to Dear Aerospace enthusiasts the country’s GDP in 2018 reached 15%, after having witnessed an in- vestment of $272.2 billion in aspects such as improvements to airport Since the establishment of the ‘Swiss Aviation and Aerospace Clus- infrastructure and a fleet of commercial aircraft. ter Middle East’ (SAAC-ME) two years ago, the Cluster Middle East has been very active in identifying potential opportunities for Swiss The continuous efforts and support of the Aerospace Cluster Middle companies, while strengthening and creating the awareness of Swiss East are giving Swiss Aerospace companies the unique opportunity to Excellence in Aviation and Aerospace across the Middle East. take an active part in one of the fastest growing aerospace regions in the world. The time is now! The aviation and aerospace industry remains one of the most strate- gic and important sectors of the non-oil economy for the future of Best regards, not only the UAE, but of the wider GCC Region. The last year alone has witnessed the participation of the SAAC–MW at many initiatives such as the Dubai Airport Show, the Dubai Airshow, the Dubai Hel- ishow, and the Middle East’s only dedicated Business Aviation Show (MEBAA). The important and impressive stance of these shows alone Chris Watts has been nothing but a clear indicator of the growth that the aviation sector as whole has been experiencing across the GCC region.

We continue to witness the mega developments occurring around the GCC in the aviation sector, such as the opening of the new ter- minal at the Muscat International Airport in Oman, or the impressive investments into the ‘Dubai South’ project, which hosts not only the Aviation District and the Flight Training Academy, but also the world’s biggest airport – Al Maktoum International Airport. On the other hand, the Dubai International Airport (DXB) alone wel- comed its billionth (Mia. in German) passenger in its history last year!

9 Annual Report SAC 2018 Financial Report SAC 2018 by Dr. Andreas Wittmer

The operational year in 2018 concludes with a profit of 2'654.25 CHF. The profit comes from increasing membership revenue and because of the financial contribution which the Office for Economy and Labor of the Canton Zurich contributed in 2018 for specific projects or the general organization of the Cluster. Furthermore, the Bodensee Aer- ospace Meeting was completed with a small positive financial result. We are proud to have a solid member basis and were able to acquire 22 new members in 2018. This leads to stable membership fees and the financial and administrative security for the organization of the Cluster.

According to the fiscal budget, the Cluster Office was led cost- ef- fectively by the Center for Aviation Competence (CFAC-HSG) and therefore contributed to the positive result. The costs of the Cluster are predictable and therefore under good control. Risks are more likely on the income side where changes of the number of members and the need for further financial support by the state of Zurich for specific projects can have positive or negative effects next year.

17 Annual Report SAC 2018 Aerospace Medicine By Prof. Dr. Marcel Egli

Astronauts suffer from intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration due to mechanical unloading caused by microgravity. Interestingly, this IVD erosion is similar to the well-known age-related IVD degeneration that causes lower back pain in elderly people on Earth.

The slow scientific advances during the last 30 years in introducing po- tent cures and prevention strategies against this particular lower back pain are due mainly to lacking human disc material and limitations of existing disease models. The Space Biology Group of the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU) has thus introduced an accelerated disease model based on mechanical unloading. With this model, the highly needed degenerated IVDs are made available for the researcher. The results gathered by the use of the IVD reac- tor will provide valuable knowledge for physiotherapy, rehabilitation, and preventive medicine. Also, it will be interesting for space medi- cine concerning the health of astronauts when sending them out for long-duration space missions like the one to Mars.

The project is based on a collaboration between CSEM Alpnach and the Space Biology Group, Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU)

In 2018 unmanned aviation remained a significant topic in the media, but also research and development in Switzerland. The EU H2020 and SESAR undertakings have released various calls for research into the innovative application of drones for safe transport.

Significant efforts have been undertaken on this topic in 2018 with studies, such as on ‘Remote-controlled flying machines' (Zivile Droh- Display of Mobile Remote Pilot Station Remote Pilot Station for BVLOS Drone nen – Herausforderungen und Perspektiven) by the Foundation for for VLOS Drone Operation Developer Operation stöhn scienthetic view and by ZHAW. Annual Report SAC 2018 24 Swiss Airport Suppliers By Carl Ziegler and Andreas Hüppi

2018 was quite an intense year regarding the many activities, where the Swiss Airport Suppliers were involved. In February 2018 the opened its doors again to a broad international audience. With a rising number of exhibitors around the aerospace industry the show was able also to attract Swiss companies from the airport supplier sector. Our members presented their products under the roof of the official SWISS Pavilion with Europoles and Batt as a prominent example. Several delegations from around the world visited our Swiss exhibitors with their innovative products. High-ranking visit from H.H. Analog to 2017, the Swiss Airport Suppliers, with the valuable support of the Swiss Business Hub GCC was again present in the Middle East at the Airport Show Dubai 2018. Many members joined the show and benefited from the established contacts between the Swiss Aerospace Cluster and the local authorities. It was again a great honor to follow the invitation of our Consul General Mr. Chris Watts to attend the Swiss Evening at his residence.

Moreover, our member IST Edelstahl has announced that they finished the development of their brand-new air-conditioning unit during 2018. Their newest product in the line-up is currently being tested. The sys- tem is based on a new very innovative in-house developed technology. First results show that it will outclass conventional air conditioning units on the market by a much higher and faster cooling capacity.
