THE ETIQUETTE OF GOLF

1 RULES GOVERNING ETIQUETTE

The establish course etiquette, conduct and advice on the game of golf. The rules should be observed by all members, guests and visitors. It is the duty of all players to acquaint themselves with the requirements and obligations.

It is expected that any member, who has won a prize, or their representative should attend all prize presentations when they are held after a competition. e.g. – Captains Day, Championship Day, Charity Weekend, Turkey Trots and any other competition the committee deem to be appropriate. Failure to attend may result in the prize being donated to the Captains Charity.

2 PRIORITY ON THE COURSE

In addition to the above, the following shall apply:

(a) The courtesy of the course shall be extended to the Captain and the Ladies’ Captain at all times. (b) Matches being played in official Club Competitions shall have priority over other matches.

3 STARTING TIMES

All start times are now governed by the members booking system (BRS). The BRS system will not apply during certain competitions and club matches – i.e. Club Championship and other competition deemed appropriate by the committee.

4 LADIES’ DAYS

On Tuesday of each week, the Ladies have priority on the course from 10.00 a.m. until clear. ( will be closed from 09.45 a.m. for other players.) On the occasions of the Ladies Spring and Autumn Meetings and The Club Championship day, the 1st is reserved in the morning and in the afternoon, until competitors are clear. Tees will also be reserved for special events as appropriate and will be detailed in the BRS tee booking system. Ladies also have 2 tee times from 09:36 a.m. off the 1st tee on a Sunday.

LOCAL RULES

Competition Scorecards

In the event of any competition score cards not being completed in accordance with the rules of golf, and any specific instructions from the Committee, (especially bearing in mind the Covid guidelines), the member or members may be disqualified. It is the responsibility of the player(s) to submit clear legible scorecards.

Out of Bounds (Rule 18)

(1) In or beyond any ditch, fence, hedge or line of white stakes defining the boundary of the course. (2) Beyond the white posts defining the practice ground when playing 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 9th holes. (3) On or over the footpath leading from the Green Keeper’s sheds to the professional’s shop on the 9th hole. (4) Beyond the inside line at ground level the safety netting retaining posts to the left hand side of 10th hole. (5) Beyond the white posts when playing the 8th and 12th hole. Note: A ball is out of bounds when all of it lies on or beyond such a line defining out of bounds.

Penalty Areas, including Lateral Areas (Rule 17)

(1) Penalty Areas are defined by yellow stakes or yellow lines. (2) Lateral Penalty Areas are defined by red stakes or red lines. (3) When both stakes and lines are used, the stakes identify the penalty area and the lines define the penalty area margin. (4) A ball is in a penalty area when it lies in or any part of it touches the penalty area, including any stake or line that defines the penalty area. (5) The part of a bridge that crosses a penalty area is in the penalty area.

Protection of Young Trees.

Trees which are staked or otherwise identified or protected (e.g. by wrapping) and if such a tree interferes with a player’s stance or the area of his intended swing, the ball MUST be lifted, without penalty, and dropped in accordance with the procedure prescribed in Rule 16 (Immovable Obstruction).

Ground Under Repair (GUR)

Relief is compulsory from all areas of the course marked GUR or so marked by white lines or signs.

Immovable Obstructions (Rule 16)

These include: (1) All artificially surfaced roads and paths on the course, including those covered with chips. All other paths and tracks are integral parts of the course. (2) White lined areas adjoining any immovable obstruction are part of the obstruction and not ground under repair. (3) Stone-filled drainage ditches or channels. (4) Sleepers, steps or wooden boards within bunkers.

Immovable Obstructions Close to Putting Green

Relief from interference by an immovable obstruction may be taken under Rule 16. In addition, if a ball lies through the general playing area (through the green) and an immovable obstruction on or within two club- lengths of the putting green and within two club-lengths of the ball intervenes on the line of play between the ball and the hole, the player MAY take relief as follows: (1) The ball may be lifted and dropped at the nearest point to where the ball lay that (a) is not nearer the hole, (b) avoids intervention and (c) is not in a penalty area or on a putting green. (2) The ball may be cleaned when lifted.

Aeration Holes & Drainage Slits

A ball that comes to rest in an aeration hole or drainage slits may be lifted without penalty and obtain relief as follows: (1) Through the Green - dropped as near to the point where the ball originally lay but not nearer the hole. (2) On the putting green - placed at the nearest spot that avoids the situation, not nearer the hole. (3) The ball may be cleaned when so lifted.

PENALTY FOR BREACH OF LOCAL RULE

Match play – Loss of hole; – two strokes.

Distance-Measuring Devices (Rule 4.3a).

Unless otherwise stated a player may only obtain distance information by use of a distance measuring device. If, during a stipulated round a player uses a distance measuring device to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect his/her shot (e.g. elevation changes, wind speed, etc.) the player is in breach of Rule 4-3.

MEN’S COMPETITION RULES

1 RULES OF GOLF

All competitions shall be played in accordance with the current edition of the ‘Rules of Golf, issued by the Royal and Ancient of St. Andrews, augmented by the current Local Rules and Course Regulations, which relate at the time of play. Special attention is drawn to Rule 6.1, governing conditions under which each competition is played.

2 ENTRY QUALIFICATION.

(a) In order to qualify for all competitions players must have a WHS Index.

(b) Cards to obtain a new Handicap Index only. Submit scorecards of 54 holes (3x 18 holes, 6x 9 holes or any combination of 9 and 18 holes) to the Handicap Committee.

3 ENTRY FEES Entry fees must be paid to the Professional before the competition is played.

4 PLAYING (COURSE) HANDICAP ALLOWANCE Maximum Playing (Course) Handicap allowance will be as shown under the rules governing the individual competitions.

5 EVENTS The following will apply when arranging Match Play Events.

(a) Members, who are unable to play in any of the rounds, or the final, should not enter.

(b) There is a responsibility on both sides to arrange matches. The first round should be arranged as soon as convenient to both sides. These arrangements should be made as early as possible after the results of the previous round are known.

(c) Matches must be played on time. Extensions will not be permitted for course closures unless the closures are for an extended period.

(d) In the event of the sides failing to agree a time, the Committee will apply Rule 33.

(e) Matches should be played (or given) on or before the closing date. In the event of the winning name not having been shown on the sheet, by 8 a.m. on the day following the closing date, both sides shall be disqualified. If a player qualifies to play in the final of two or more matches, they must be played by the closing date on the individual competition sheet; any exception would require approval by the Competitions and Handicaps Committee.

(g) Players must write their telephone number on the sheet immediately. Failure to insert your telephone number or contact details may result in disqualification.

MEN’S COMPETITION RULES

6 MEDAL OR STROKE PLAY EVENTS

All competitors MUST sign in at the Pro-Shop, gent’s locker room or members lounge or HowDidiDo before starting their round. All cards, including cards marked as ‘Nil Return’, must be returned at the end of each round with all hole scores recorded after ‘Nil Return’. Repeated failure to comply with this requirement could result in disqualification from future competitions. All competitors are solely responsible for their personal score input on the terminal’s [PSI] or the HowDidiDo app.

7 TEES

(a) All competitions, must be played from the competition tees. Competitions must start from the first , except that. with the agreement of all parties involved, rounds of the Captain’s Prize, Swindell’s Cup, Swindell’s Plate, Joe Sprott Trophy, Peckett Cup, Smith’s Trophy and Wilf Vincent Memorial Trophy may start from either the 1st or 10th tees. In the event of a tie, additional holes must start from the 1st tee irrespective of the tee from which the match started. (b) Members playing in Grimsby Golf Club Official Competitions must be given priority. (c) Exceptions to the above maybe permitted by prior arrangements with the Handicaps’ Committee.

8 HONOUR

The first named in the draw shall have the honour on the first teeing ground. In the absence of a draw, the honour shall be decided by lot. (Rule 10.1 Match Play, Rule 10.2 Stroke Play.)

9 TIES

HANDICAP MATCH PLAY COMPETITIONS

In the event of a tie, play off shall be over single holes, resulting in sudden death, starting at the first hole until a decision is reached.

SCRATCH MATCH PLAY COMPETITIONS

Play off shall be over single holes, resulting in sudden death, starting at the first hole until a decision is reached. Any agreed break in play must be resumed at the place where play was discontinued.

10 STARTING TIMES.

Competitions entry will be via the BRS online facility, or the Professionals shop, and are permitted 3 weeks before the competition date. Tee times not taken seven days prior to the competition may be booked for casual golf providing a similar game format to the competition is played.

11 IN THE EVENT OF A TIE IN COMPETITIONS.

Winners will be decided as per Congu rules on: (except in stated competitions)

12 DISPUTES – Match play Competitions

Swindell’s Cup - For those members who enter this singles knock-out and who are defeated in the provisional or first round, they have the option to compete in the Swindell’s plate. A list will be posted in the Clubhouse.

MATCHPLAY COMPETITION RULES 2021

The following process must be adhered to when arranging matches with opponents.

 Both teams or individuals are responsibility for contacting their opponents to agree date & time arrangements for the match.  Contact details of all participants must be added to the master draw sheet for each relevant competition in the gent’s locker room.

 Contact with opponents must be made as soon as possible and no later than seven (7) days prior to the Round cut-off date for the match.

 The winning individual/team must update the knockout sheet immediately the match is completed, delays may result in disqualification.

 The H&C Match play sub-committee must be informed seven (7) days before the cut-off date for the match if there is a problem playing a game. The H&C sub- committee will have the final say on adjudication on any issue.

COURSE REGULATIONS

1 PREFACE

These Regulations may be temporarily amended, or additions made, if unusual conditions arise. All changes will be published on BRS/notice boards and will apply only during the period of the unusual conditions.

2 COMPETITIONS TEES

Competition Tees must be used when playing recognised Club Competitions or official Club matches, Competition tees must not be used at other times, except by special permission via the club professional.

3 BUNKERS, GREENS AND DIVOTS

In order to maintain the course in the best possible playing condition, it is imperative that bunkers are properly raked, using the rakes provided, pitch marks on the greens are properly repaired and divots are replaced. Players are expected to comply with this requirement. If other players are seen to fail to comply, it should be brought to their attention. At all times rakes should be left in the bunkers on the rake supports. Rake supports in bunkers are classed as movable obstructions. Please proceed under rule 24-1.

4 PRACTISING

A player may practice on the Course, provided he does not interfere with other players and does not use more than two balls. In all matches the Rules of Golf concerning practising apply.

5 PRACTICE GROUND

(a) Only wooden clubs, or their equivalent, are permitted to be used on the raised areas. Tee pegs must always be used on these areas. (b) Practice with other clubs and fairway woods, should be from the areas in front of the raised tees. It is dangerous to practice in the middle of the practice ground and this should be avoided. (c) To avoid confusion, it is recommended that practice balls be marked for identification. (d) Members are requested to give priority to official junior coaching sessions. (e) Courtesy and consideration should be given to other users of the practice ground, especially those practising for specific competitions and also to allow teaching by the Professional.

6 PRACTICE PUTTING GREEN

This area is to be used for putting and for running chip shots and played from the side of the putting green. A special area in the practice ground and adjacent to the putting green has been set aside for practising pitching shots. Pitching is not allowed on the putting green.

7 WINTER RULES

When ‘placing’ is permitted notices will be exhibited. At such times a ball lying in the general area maybe moved, or, may be lifted, cleaned and placed (as per the local rule at the time), of where it originally lay, but not closer to the hole. After the ball has been so moved or placed, it is in play and shall not be re-lifted.

Penalty for breach of Local Rule. Match Play - Loss of hole. Stroke Play - 2 Strokes.

‘Closely mown’ is defined as any area of the course cut to fairway length or shorter and includes mown paths through the rough. It does not include rough, semi-rough and greens.

Winter rules may be modified to allow for the weather or the course conditions. Notices will be exhibited informing members of the changes.

8 GREEN - CLOSED TO PREVENT DAMAGE

When weather conditions are such that damage may be caused to the greens, they will be closed and temporary greens brought into use. Notices will be displayed.

A notice will be displayed to show when the practice putting green is not to be used.

TYPE Texas Scramble Medal, teams of four, enter in pairs (teams will be drawn). Open to all gentlemen and ladies with WHS Handicap Index.

STROKES Playing (Course) Handicap allowance 25%, 20%, 15% and 10% from the lowest to the highest handicap, all handicaps are to be added together.

TEES Gents to play from the white tees, ladies from the red tees.

CONDITIONS Members may enter in pairs via the entry sheet in the club foyer. Players must have 4 drives selected and indicated on the card. If a ball is selected in the rough then the other players must DROP the ball as close to the original position as possible. All other shots will be placed not nearer to the hole and within 6” of the original position of the selected ball. The player whose ball is selected having got to the green shall be the first player to putt.

Both trophies can be won by the same player however, 1st place vouchers for both events cannot be awarded to the same person. In the event of a tie, play off shall be over single holes, resulting in sudden death starting at the first hole until a decision is reached.

TYPE Awarded to the most improved junior over a playing season. CONDITIONS Junior must be aged 13 or more on the 1st January at the beginning of the playing season. Improvement is based on their starting and end Handicap(s) which will give the calculation on how much they have improved over the playing season.

MOST IMPROVED (UNDER 13S)

TYPE Awarded to the most improved junior over a playing season. CONDITIONS Junior must be aged under 13 on the 1st January at the beginning of the playing season. The prize is determined by Professional based on observation over the playing season.

RUTH CUNNINGHAM SHIELD

TYPE Individual 9 Hole Medal Play STROKES 95% Playing (Course) Handicap TEES Yellow NOTES Juniors without Playing (Course) Handicap are allowed to enter this event and will play from the red tees. The Professional will allocate them a Handicap Index based on ability.
