The Phonology of Aspiration in Icelandic: a Gesture-Based Approach THE PHONOLOGY OF ASPIRATION IN ICELANDIC: A GESTURE-BASED APPROACH A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Linda Heimisdóttir August 2015 c 2015 Linda Heimisdóttir ALL RIGHTS RESERVED THE PHONOLOGY OF ASPIRATION IN ICELANDIC: A GESTURE-BASED APPROACH Linda Heimisdóttir, Ph.D. Cornell University 2015 This dissertation examines aspirated consonants in Icelandic from several an- gles, including dialectal variation, language acquisition, and diachronic develop- ment. The main question addressed pertains to the articulatory organization of these consonants, more specifically how the relationship between laryngeal speech gestures and the oral gestures they are produced in tandem with can best be un- derstood and represented in phonological terms. We propose an analysis of glottal gestures as subordinate speech gestures tied to oral head gestures and show how the coordination between these two types of gestures is determined by phonolog- ical constraints. We pay special attention to preaspirated stops in Icelandic and discuss how children’s early acquisition of these stops compared to postaspirated stops sheds a light on patterns of articulatory coordination. Icelandic is ideal for examining the coordination of glottal gestures because it is rich in laryngeal contrasts. Its two main dialects, the Northern Dialect (ND) and the Southern Dialect (SD), differ primarily in the degree of aspiration on word-internal stop consonants. We present an analysis of these dialectal patterns, where variation in aspiration is explained in terms of the timing of glottal gestures relative to oral ones, we discuss the history of these differences from various angles, and propose sociolinguistic reasons for why they have occurred. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Linda Heimisdóttir was born in the town of Akureyri in northern Iceland in 1984 but moved to a suburb of the capital city, Reykjavík, at the age of two. At the age of sixteen she began junior college at Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík where she majored in classic languages. It was there where her interest in linguistics first awoke while attending a year-long introductory course in synchronic and diachronic linguistics. After graduating from junior college summa cum laude in 2004 she moved on to doing an undergraduate degree at the University of Iceland in Icelandic linguistics and literature, with a minor in Latin. Upon finishing her B.A. in 2008 she was offered the opportunity to move to Ithaca NY and teach a course in Old Norse at Cornell University for one year while attending classes at the Department of Linguistics as a non-degree student. She liked the department so much that she decided to stay at Cornell and apply for the Ph.D. program in linguistics, where she began her graduate studies in the fall of 2009. After completing her Ph.D. Linda will be moving to Portland OR to live with her husband and (hopefully) start her linguistics career. iii To Bishu, for his unconditional love and support iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS It is only fitting that I begin this section by acknowledging Draga Zec who has been my advisor since the end of my first year as a Ph.D. student at Cornell. I was completing my undergraduate degree at the University of Iceland when the position of an Old Norse instructor became available at Cornell, a position normally filled by an Icelandic graduate student as per the terms of the late Willard Fiske, the donator of the Fiske Icelandic Collection, the largest collection of Icelandic literature in North America. Guðrún, herself a graduate of Cornell University, reached out to me and encouraged me to apply for the position, and it was because of her support and faith in me that I took the plunge and set out for the adventure that my stay at Cornell has turned out to be. I have no words to express how grateful I am to Guðrún for setting me on this path. I would also like to thank another Cornell alumnus, Haraldur Bernharðsson, who taught me my very first linguistics course in junior college (and awoke my interest in the field!) and later became my v undergraduate thesis advisor. Besides doing a stellar job of advising me on my thesis during my last year of undergrad, Haraldur was an endless source of good advice regarding my upcoming stay in Ithaca and my new job there as an Old Norse instructor. While on the topic of Old Norse, I’d like to give a special thank you to the Old Norse reading group that I have been a part of ever since I first came to Cornell. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to read and learn about Old Norse every week from Tom, Oren, Patrick, Xan, Binna, and many other previous members. I will miss those gatherings. My years at Cornell have been the best years of my life. Here I have grown as a person, a linguist, a friend, and a partner. I met my husband Bishu during my very first week in Ithaca and a few months later we started our relationship. Bishu has always been my biggest cheerleader and I am looking forward to many more years with such a loving and supportive partner. Our friends from the international TA program at Cornell, Leifur, Milena, Manasi, and Sarabjeet, made my first year in Ithaca unforgettable. I have had the good fortune of getting to know several amazing people during my stay here, each of whom has contributed to my life in a meaningful way. Last but certainly not least of my Ithaca friends, Corey and Adam have understood me in a way nobody else can and for that I am grateful. I have been fortunate enough to not just have support locally in Ithaca but also from my friends and family back home in Iceland. Ever since I was a little girl, my parents have supported me in every decision I have made, whether it was personal or academic. Such a distribution is consistent with an analysis in which the contrast is one of [voice] and syllable-final stops are devoiced. It is also consistent with the view that in German the contrast is between stops that are [spread glottis] and those that are not. On such a view, the intervocalic voiced stops arise because of passive voicing of the non-[spread glottis] stops. The purpose of this paper is to present experimental results that support the view that German has underlying [spread glottis] stops, not [voice] stops. 1 Introduction In spite of the fact that voiced (obstruent) stops in German (and many other Germanic languages) are markedly different from voiced stops in languages like Spanish, Russian and Hungarian, all of these languages are usually claimed to have stops that contrast in voicing. For example, Wurzel (1970), Rubach (1990), Hall (1993) and Wiese (1996) assume that German has underlying voiced stops in their different accounts of Ger- man syllable-final devoicing in various rule-based frameworks. Similarly, Lombardi (1999) assumes that German has underlying voiced obstruents in her optimality-theoretic (OT) account of syllable-final laryngeal neutralisation and assimilation in obstruent clusters.

Cardiff University. 2015 SUMMARY It is a well-established fact that all human societies have coexisted with and are dependent upon animals and it is increasingly recognized that the study of human-animal relationships provides vital insights into past human societies. Still this is yet to be widely embraced in archaeology. This thesis has examined human-animal interdependencies to explore the social identities and structure of society in the Norse North Atlantic. Benefitting from recent research advances in animal studies and the ever increasing volume of archaeological reports from Norse period archaeological excavations the North Atlantic this thesis was able to develop previous scholarship and define directions for future research. The thesis explored the role of animals in human society in the North Atlantic to reveal the complex Norse societies that existed. It revealed through human interdependencies with animals that these societies were far from homogeneous and had their own distinct identities with the individual islands as well as across the North Atlantic. The thesis achieved this by examining several important discrete but interlinked themes. These themes were divided into four chapters that focused on the individual aspects. This included an examination of previous North Atlantic Viking Age scholarship, consideration of human construction and perception of landscape through archaeological excavations, investigation of the role of domestic animals in human social activities, and an exploration of the role of domesticated animals in beliefs.

Hill Harvard University Although Tibetan orthography distinguishes aspirated and unaspirated voiceless consonants, various authors have viewed this distinction as not phonemic. An examination of the unaspirated voiceless initials in the Old Tibetan Inscriptions, together with unaspirated voiceless consonants in several Tibetan dialects confirms that aspiration was either not phonemic in Old Tibetan, or only just emerging as a distinction due to loan words. The data examined also affords evidence for the nature of the phonetic word in Old Tibetan. Key words: Tibetan orthography, aspiration, Old Tibetan 1. Introduction The distribution between voiceless aspirated and voiceless unaspirated stops in Written Tibetan is nearly complementary. This fact has been marshalled in support of the reconstruction of only two stop series (voiced and voiceless) in Proto-Tibeto- Burman. However, in order for Tibetan data to support a two-way manner distinction in Proto-Tibeto-Burman it is necessary to demonstrate that the three-way distinction of voiced, voiceless aspirated, and voiceless unaspirated in Written Tibetan is derivable from an earlier two-way voicing distinction. Those environments in which voiceless aspirated and unaspirated stops are not complimentary must be thoroughly explained. The Tibetan script distinguishes the unaspirated consonant series k, c, t, p, ts from the aspirated consonant series kh, ch, th, ph, tsh. The combination of letters hr and lh are not to be regarded as representing aspiration but rather the voiceless counterparts to r and l respectively (Hahn 1973:434).

Comparisons of these studies to those done in the early 1990s indicated that not much had changed.

    Jan-Olof Svantesson & Anastasia Karlsson Lund University Preaspiration in Modern and Old Mongolian Background The problem of how to analyse the two contrasting manners of articulation for Mongolian stops and affricates has been debated since Mongolian phonetics first came to be studied. To date, there remains no consensus about the phonetic correlates of the two manners of articulation found in the literature. In phone- mic transcriptions, the two series have often been rendered with symbols for voiceless and voiced consonants. The Cyrillic Mongolian script also treats them in this way. Most Mongolists have used terms such as fortis ~ lenis, strong ~ weak, or tense ~ lax; see the review in our book, The Phonology of Mongolian (Svantesson et al. 2005: 220–221). In that book, we presented data showing that the difference is one of the presence vs. the absence of aspiration. Aspirated consonants are preaspirated in all positions except utterance-initially, while they are postaspirated word-in- itially. Here we will present more data to support this analysis. (An analysis of this kind was already proposed by the Finland-Swedish scholar John Ramstedt in his pioneering 1902 description of Halh Mongolian phonetics.) The stop and affricate phonemes are shown in (1). Minimal pairs show- ing that they contrast are given in Svantesson et al. (2005: 26–27). In phonemic transcription, we write aspirated stops and affricates as /pʰ/, /tʰ/, etc.; although the aspiration sign is written after the consonant, it is intended as a symbol for (pre- or post-) aspiration in general. In close phonetic transcription, we differen- tiate between pre- and postaspiration [ʰt, tʰ].

In our spontaneous speech data voiceless geminate stops are frequently preaspirated, which is an extremely rare phenomenon cross-linguistically. Preaspiration of voiceless stops has been associated in other languages with devoicing of voiced stops. We compare the acoustic appearance & duration of voiceless /VC:/ sequences (with & without preaspiration) with voiced /VC:/ sequences in our language. Results indicate that long voiced stops in Sienese Italian are often partially devoiced – a phenomenon that has not been reported previously for any variety of Italian. We suggest that preaspiration & devoicing are likely related, & attempt to provide an articulatory explanation as to why they occur. ‘abacus’ v. /babbo/ ‘dad’. Esposito, Sameer ud Dowla Khan, Alex Hurst [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Abstract Previous work on breathiness in Indic languages has focused primarily on the acoustic properties of breathy (also known as aspirated) oral stops in languages like Hindi ([ baːːːl] ‘hair’ vs. [ bʱʱʱaːːːl] ‘forehead’) or Bengali ([ bati] ‘bowl’ vs. [ bʱʱʱati] ‘kiln’). However, breathiness in some Indic languages also extends to nasals, as in Marathi ([ maːːːr] ‘beat’ vs. [ m̤̤̤a̤ ːːːr] ‘a caste’). It is not clear if languages such as Hindi and Bengali have breathy nasals in addition to breathy oral stops. This study addresses the following question: in Bengali and Hindi, are /N/ + /h/ sequences single breathy nasals ([N ̤̤̤]),̤ or are they clusters ([Nh])? To answer this question, simultaneous audio, aerodynamic, and electroglottographic recordings were made of Hindi, Bengali, and Marathi speakers. Within- and cross-language comparisons were made, and phonological evidence was examined. While some within-language comparisons gave inconclusive results for Hindi and Bengali, other comparisons with Marathi and within-language phonological evidence pointed to the lack of breathy nasals in Hindi and an uncertain status for breathy nasals in Bengali. 1 Introduction 1 The Indic languages are typologically unusual, possessing a four-way oral stop contrast that includes both voiceless and voiced aspirates. 2 This is exemplified in Table 1, with data from two Indic languages, Bengali and Hindi.     Chapter Ten The life cycle of preaspiration in the Gaelic languages Pavel Iosad University of Edinburgh This chapter represents (yet another) contribution to the vexed issue of the role of Old Norse in the history of Scottish Gaelic. The historical, archaeological, and cultural evidence for the interaction between Norse and Gaelic speakers in the period between the start of the Viking Age in the North Atlantic and the (re-)Gaelicization of Scotland, is incontrovertible; so is the presence of numerous traces of language contact, particularly in the lexicon and toponomasticon. As for structural influence, probably the most controversial has been the proposal that the preaspiration of medial stops in the ‘voiceless’ /p t k/ series – a pervasive feature of Gaelic – shows a special connection to the very similar phenomenon in (especially Insular) North Germanic. Scholars have attributed the connection to a Norse substrate that influenced Gaelic in the later medieval period, to Gaelic influence on North Germanic in a contact situation, and to membership in a northern European ‘linguistic landscape’ – and some have denied that the connection actually exists. In this chapter I argue that we can approach a resolution of the conun- drum if we take seriously the results achieved in theoretical historical phono- logy. In particular, the theory of the life cycle of phonological processes allows us to reconstruct a course for the development of Gaelic preaspiration that has important implications for the contact theory of preaspiration origins. This approach, which provides a conceptual foundation for the traditional dialectological association of innovation with central areas and archaisms with peripheries, provides a remarkably good fit with what we know about the diatopic variability of Gaelic preaspiration.
