On Friday: 5-4-2 On Saturday: 3-8-1 THE RENSSELAER SERIES: The Saints and RPI have met 132 times since the initial game in the 1950-51 season, which is the second most games against any opponent for SLU (Clarkson and the Saints have played 195 times). SLU leads the series 75-51-6 and is 43-17-2 in Canton which includes a 2-0 home win last season. The Saints have won at least one game in each season since2007-08 and have won the last three on home ice. RPI’s last win in Canton was a 7-6 overtime decision in the 2008-09 season.
BROTHER ACTS: The arrival of Matt Carey gives the Saints a brother act in the lineup for the ninth straight season and bodes well for older brother Greg. Brothers George and Gunnar Hughes played together for the Saints in 2012-13 and 2011-12, Sean and Kyle Flanagan and Pat and Matt Raley were teammates in 2010-11, Derek and Jared Keller played together from 2007-08 to 2009-10, and Mark and Paul Wallmann played for the Saints from 2004-05 to 2006-07. Other brother acts who have played together for the Saints have included the Lappins...Pete and Tim from 1984-85 to 1988-89 and Mike and Chris in 1990-91 and 1991-92, the Harneys, Jake and Justin from 1996-00, the Muir twins, Mike and Sean from 1998-02, plus Eric and Martin Lacroix in the 1990s, Bill and Mike Gerrie and Dean and Dick Popiel in the 1980s. The good news for Greg Carey? In five of the brother pairings since 1987, one has been an All America...giving him a good chance to repeat. Pete Lappin was a two-time All America, Mike Lappin earned All America as a senior as did Justin Harney, Sean Flanagan and George Hughes. Pete and Tim Lappin are third on the all-time scoring list for brothers who have played together with 315 points (Pete 187, Tim 128). In terms of single-season scoring, Pete and Tim Lappin combined for 99 points in their senior year while Mike and Chris Lappin combined for 88 in their senior year. The Careys have accounted for 73 points in 24 games thus far this season.
SPECIAL TEAMS: The Saint power play is number one in the nation in terms of percentage at 31.0 percent, but the Saint penalty kill is on the other end of the spectrum at 73.5 percent. Greg Carey leads the nation in power play points (25) and assists (22) while Jeremy Wick is third nationally in power play goals with 10. The Saints shut out the Cornell power play on Friday, the first time they have not allowed a power play goal since a game at RIT on Nov. 23. BACK ATOP THE LIST: Greg Carey finished his junior season as the leading scorer, both in league and overall play, in the ECAC and 20 games into the current season, he is back at the top of both scoring lists. Heading into the weekend he is second in the nation in points per game, third in total points, first in assists per game and in assists. He also leads the nation in power play points and power play assists. His younger brother Matt is first in points per game among rookies, second in points with 29 and second in goals with 16. Greg is currently on a 19-game scoring streak with 12 goals and 26 assists in those 19 games. Greg Carey is ten points ahead of his last season’s pace when he had 16 goals and 18 assists for 34 points at the 24-game mark He finished the year leading the nation in goals with 28 and had 51 points in 38 games.
FIRST ONE: While Greg Carey now has 80 career goals, a game 2 empty netter against Maine was the first empty net goal of his col- legiate career...and matches the number of empty net goals scored in each of the last two seasons by the Saints. Kyle Essery scored one against Cornell last season and Gunnar Hughes had one in February of 2012 as the Saints scored just one ENG in each of those campaigns. They scored four in the 2010-11 campaign with Carey getting an assist on Aaron Bogosian’s empty netter against Sacred Heart. Carey scored his second of the year at Dartmouth and it was a strange one as the goaltender was on his way to the bench when Carey intercepted a pass and hit the empty net. After discussion, it was scored as an empty net goal with the goalie getting a minus in the plus/minus as the extra attacker had not actually stepped on the ice.
NHL CONNECTIONS: Former Saint Rich Peverley (Boston Bruins) and Brandon Bollig (Chicago Blackhawks) were the only Saints playing in the NHL last season with a number of players playing in the AHL, ECHL or other professional leagues. A host of former players hold significant positions in the NHL. Former goaltender Jacques Martin was the head coach of the Montreal Canadiens and is currently an assistant at Pittsburgh. Ex-defenseman Randy Sexton, former GM at Ottawa and Florida, is now with Pittsburgh in player development.. Bill Torrey, who has a long history of management success in the NHL, was in charge of the search for Martin’s replacement as GM in Florida, is the Panthers’ Alternate Governor and is a member of the NHL Hall of Fame. Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh GM Ray Shero is a former Saint captain. Murray Cawker is Director of Hockey Operations for the Florida Panthers, Paul Castron is Director of Amateur Scouting for the Columbus Blue Jackets, Eric LaCroix is Director of Hockey Operations for the Colora- do Avalanche, Mike Barnett is Director of US Scouting for the New York Rangers and is a former Pheonix Coyotes GM, Mike Mudd is president of the Worcester Sharks, Mark Leach is a scout for the Detroit Red Wings, and Mark Bonneau is a vice president with the Ottawa Senators. Teddy Dent is the coach of the Chicago’s top minor league club in Rockford. Former Saint player Jamie Baker, who had a 10-year NHL career, is the color commentator and SLU graduate Dan Rousanowsky is the play-by-play announcer for the San Jose Sharks. Mike Madill retired as a player last year and was named coach of the Las Vegas team in the ECHL. Peverley, now in Dallas, became the first Saint to have his name engraved on the Stlanley Cup as a playing member of the championship team when the Bruins won the cup in June. Bollig joined him (along with Dent) this past season when the Blackhawks won the cup.
PLAYER PROFILES 2 • Eric Sweetman • Fr. • Defenseman • 5-11 • 175 • Woodbine, MD • Youngstown (USHL): Eric scored seven goals and had 11 assists for 18 points from the blue line in 63 games for the Youngstown Phantoms. He was plus-three for the season and had five special teams goals, three on the power play and two shorthanded. In two seasons at Youngstown he scored 11 goals and had 19 as- sists in 123 games. He attended Ursuline High School and played lacrosse, helping his team to a state championship. He is the son of Mike and Linda Sweetman. 2013-14: Made his collegiate debut in game one against Maine and assisted on Patrick Doherty’s game winning goal for his first collegiate point. Scored his first collegiate goal on the power play in game two at Ferris State. He had his first career multi-point game with assists on two of the three goals at Harvard and added an assist at Dartmouth. He ran his scoring streak to three games with a helper against Colgate. He has scored at least one point in every weekend series since the Yale-Brown set. He assisted on both goals against Vermont for his second two-point night of the year. The team went 33-21-1 and allowed less than three goals per game in 2012-13. The son of Beny and Janet Masella, he attended Deerfield Academy and played hockey for the team which won the Deerfield Academy Cup. 2013-14: Made his collegiate debut in game one against Maine and had an assist. He earned All New England first team honors in both hockey and lacrosse while playing for the Holderness School in 2012 and also played soccer for Holderness. He is the son of John and Jessica Bayreuther. 2013-14: Gavin had a goal in each of the Maine games and assisted on the game winner in game one. He scored his third of the year and second power play goal at Brown as part of a three point weekend. He scored his sixth of the year on the power play at Colgate. He leads all rookie defensemen in scoring nationally with 20 points, is 12th overall among rookies in scoring and is sixth nationally among all defense- men overall. Rated as the top current collegiate player among North Americans in the NHL draft prospect list (115th) and as the top rookie offensive defenseman nationally by Overtheboards.com. 9 • Alex Hagen • So. • Forward • 5-11 • 185 • Bronxvville, NY • Surrey (BCHL): The first second generation Saint player since Andre Dalbec, who played in the 1984-85 and 1985-86 seasons, Alex is the son of former Saint forward Kevin Hagen ‘82 and his wife Car- oline. Kevin was a three-year regular for the Saints. Alex scored 43 points in 57 games for the Surrey Eagles in the British Columbia Hockey League prior to joining the Saints The MVP at Choate-Rosemary Hall in 2009, he had 20 goals and 23 assists for Surrey. 2012- 13: Made his collegiate debut at Western Michigan...he scored his first collegiate point with an assist at Northeastern...he was injured in the Colgate game returned to action against Vermont. He played in 34 of 38 as a rookie. 2013-14: Alex played in both Maine games and picked up his first assist of the season in game one. Set up the first Saint goal at Ferris State in the game one win. Scored his first collegiate goal in game two of the Northeastern series and had his first multi-point game with a goal and an assist. He scored his second goal of the season on a rebound at Harvard. 10 • Greg Carey • Sr. • Forward • 5-11 • 195 • Hamilton, ON • Burlington (OJHL) Greg Carey set the OJHL goal scoring record playing for the Burlington Cougars in junior hockey with 72 goals in 48 games. He also had 42 assists for 114 points and finished the year with a plus-59 plus/minus rating. He had 27 power play goals, four shorthanders and seven game winning goals. The son of Alan and Debra Carey, he was team captain for the Cougars and was a member of Team Canada East and the CCHL All Star Team. He is a graduate of St. Thomas More Secondary School. 2010-11: Carey had one of the out- standing rookie seasons in program history as he was the first Saint freshman to lead the team in scoring since Paul Castron in 1982 and had the second best freshman goal total with 23, the most for a rookie since Brandon Dietrich had 20 in 1998-99 and second only to Neale Langill’s 28 in 1951-52. Carey was named to the ECAC All Rookie Team, was the Saint team Rookie of the Year and earned ECAC Rookie of the Week honors six times. He had multiple point games 10 times and multiple goal games eight times. He scored his first collegiate goal as part of a hat trick against Western Michigan on Oct. 23 at Appleton Arena. He had a four-point night with two goals and two assists in a 6-0 win at Michigan Tech and had five goals and an assist in the playoffs. He scored 10 power play goals and had three game winning goals. He was fourth nationally in points per game bya rookie at 1.00 and was tied for second in rookie goal scoring nationally. 2011-12:Carey shared the scoring lead for the Saints as a sophomore and will head into his junior season with 77 points, the most since Brandon Dietrich put up 80 in his two seasons from 1998-2000. Carey led the team in goals and was second in assists and had five power play goals and three game winners. He also assisted on two game winning goals. He scored the winner at Princeton, against Yale in overtime at Yale and Quinnipiac at home. Of his 15 goals, 12 came from January on and he had four two-goal games. He was named ECAC Player of the Week Feb. 14 after scoring three goals and assisting on two others in a sweep of Quinnipac and Princeton. He ended the year on a eight-game scoring streak and had a five-game streak in December and January. He scored in 23 of 36 including nine of his last 10. 2012-13: The first junior to earn All America honors since Pete Lappin and Hank Lam- mens in 1997 and the first junior in program history to be a Hobey Baker Award finalist, Greg Carey led the nation in goals scored with 28 and in power play goals with 14. He joins a select group of players who have led the team in scoring in three straight seasons and will bid to become the first four-time scoring leader in program history. He was a first-team All ECAC selection after scoring 28 goals and 23 assists for 51 points including a league leading 30 points in 22 games on 18 goals and 12 assists. He scored six game winning goals. He heads into his senior season with 66 career goals, just five out of the top ten in program history. He was named ECAC and national Player of the Month for the month of February 2013. 2013-14: Had a five point weekend in the sweep of Maine, scoring two and assisting on two in Saturday’s 5-2 win. He also assisted on the first official goal of the season. Earned ECAC Player of the Week for the second time in his career. His empty net goal to end game two was the first of his career. Had two assists, his second multi-point game of the season in game two of the Northeastern series. Opened ECAC play with a five point weekend (2 goals, 3 assists). His six point weekend at Harvard and Dartmouth earned his second ECAC Player of the Week honor. He scored his 13th career game winner at Harvard which is third nationally among active players. His 80 career goals are tied for fourth on the all-time Saint list and lead all active NCAA players. His 168 career points are seventh on the SLU list. He has scored in 19 straight with goals in 12 of the 19. He was named ECAC Player of the Week after the North Dakota series and also earned ECAC Player of the Month honors and National Player of the Month honors after taking over the national scoring lead with a 21 point month in 10 games, eight of which were on the road. He had nine goals and 12 assists for the month. He had a six point weekend in the Clarkson series and is third nationally in scoring. He leads the nation in assists with 30 and leads in power play points and power play assists. He is among 11 ECAC Players who have been nominated for the 2014 Hobey Baker Award and is among 20 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award. He has had three consecutive two-assist games. He was a high honors graduate at Advanced Technology Academy and played for the Boston Junior Bruins on an Empire JHL championship team prior to his season with Camrose. The son of Brian and Lynn McMullan, he intends to major in economics and Spanish. He is the first player in program history from Las Vegas. 2012-13: Made his collegiate debut in game two of the Western Michigan series and played in 14 games as a rookie. 2013-14: Made his first appearance of the season in game two at RIT and scored his first collegiate goal. He had a 3.09 goals against average and a .896 save percentage overall with a 13-16-3 record. He had a 2.73 goals against average, .911 save percentage and 10-10-1 record in league play. He posted a 18-save shutout of RPI in a 2-0 win and made 33 saves in a 1-0 overtime win at Quinnipiac. He had a season high 46 saves in a 4-3 loss at Clarkson and had over 30 saves in 10 games.He was ECAC Goaltender of the Week for the Week of Feb. 15 after wins over Princeton and Quinnipiac. 2012-13: Matt started every game in goal as a junior, running his consecutive start streak to 49 consecutive games. He compiled a 2.79 goals against average with a .915 save percentage and set records for career saves, season appearances and career appearanc- es and career minutes played. He tied the career record for ties with 10. He had a pair of shutouts in an 18-16-4 season, blanking Maine 5-0 on 30 saves and Huntsville 4-0 with 21 stops. He had 43 saves in a game at Boston University and made 31 in a 2-1 win at nationally number one ranked Quinnipiac in Feburary. He earned ECAC Goaltender of the Week honors three times and was ECAC Goaltender of the Month for October. starting the season 3-1 with a 1.75 goals against average and a .952 save percentage. 2013- 14: Made career starts number 98 and 99 in the Maine series and ran his record against the Bears to 4-0 as he made 25 saves in a 3-1 win on Friday and 33 in a 5-2 victory Saturday. He earned ECAC Goaltender of the Week honors. He ran his consecutive starts streak to 53 in the Ferris State series and earned his first win over the Bulldogs with a strong effort on Friday night. His consecutive starts streak stopped at 54 when Tyler Parks started game two of the Northeastern series. He was a team captain, named to the Team East Canada Jr. All Star Game, the Team Canada Selects and was selected for the OPHL All Star game. He was team MVP after scoring 25 goals with 55 assists in 48 games and finishing the year with a plus-33 plus/minus rating.
