Chinese Innovations in Mobile Telecommunications: Third Generation vs. ‘Guerrilla Handsets” Paper presented at the IGCC Conference: Chinese Approaches to National Innovation La Jolla, California, June 28-29, 2010 Abstract: This paper analyses two cases of innovation which have taken place recently in China. Although both cases are related to mobile telecommunications, they represent very different types of innovation: One is a government-led, top-down type, which has been much publicized by the Chinese media as a successful case of China’s “indigenous innovation,” while the other is a bottom-up, unofficial one, which is usually not considered as an “innovation” in the Chinese media but rather as a case of industrial piracy. In this paper, however, I will shed light on the innovative aspect of the latter, and compare its market results with the former. 1 Comparison and Recommendations for Low-Cost Digital Video Recorders in Early Intervention and Early Care and Development By Larry Edelman Permission is granted to share this document in whole, but not part. Please reference as: Edelman, L. (2011). Comparison and recommendations for low-cost digital video recorders. Published by author, Denver, Colorado. For information contact [email protected] Which low-cost digital video recorders are best for use in professional development, technical assistance, supervision, coaching, and service delivery activities? There are many good choices and new brands and models appear very frequently and current models are updated or discontinued all the time. The model that will be best for you depends on your purposes for using video and the features that you need or want. The chart below might help you get an idea of which features are most important to you. Features to Why These Features Might Matter Consider Format Decide if you want/need SD (standard definition) or HD (high definition). HD has a better image but also much larger file sizes. Video compression Find out what video format the camcorders record in and if that format suits your needs for your end product, editing, posting, and playing. Not all formats work equally well on PCs and Macs. And not all formats can be imported into the video editing software that you like to use; you may need to transcode file formats or choose a different editing application. The most common formats lately seem to include .MP4 and .mov, and lees often .avi. Record in different Some camcorders just have one setting. -

PRIMER on USING an MP3 RECORDER for DX-ING (C) Bjarne Mjelde
PRIMER ON USING AN MP3 RECORDER FOR DX-ING (c) Bjarne Mjelde Recording DX has come a long way since I started DX-ing in the early 70's. Tape recording was the only possible way in those days; I started off with a cassette player. Not until the late 90's did other media begin to gain ground, especially so the Minidisc-recorder. It is still popular with DX-ers, especially after having evolved into the Hi-MD format which permits quick upload to PC's. Recording directly to the PC is also common and programs for that purpose have been evaluated elsewhere on this site. But recording to a PC requires – a PC. Which is not always possible, or desired, for reasons like space, transport/weight, RFI etc. So what about those small gadgets we have seen evolve over the last few years, the MP3 players? Some of them actually have the option of analogue recording through a dedicated line input. The thought of using an MP3 player (or more correctly a player/recorder but I will use the term MP3 player in the following) has matured for some time, until I decided to buy one and see if it could work. Recording DX has one vital requirement: The recording device must have the ability to start recording on the fly. No menu-choices, no pre-titleing of file names, no auto-shutdown. And the device needs sufficient capacity for the DX session. Running out of space as DX gets hot is the typical example of a bad setting. -
Mobile Phones in Society
Mobile phone From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia "Cell Phone" redirects here. For the film, see Cell Phone (film). "Handphone" redirects here. For the film, see Handphone (film). Motorola L7 mobile phone A mobile phone, cell phone or hand phone is an electronic device used to make mobile telephone calls across a wide geographic area, served by many public cells, allowing the user to be mobile. By contrast, a cordless telephone is used only within the range of a single, private base station, for example within a home or an office. A mobile phone can make and receive telephone calls to and from the public telephone network which includes other mobiles and fixed-line phones across the world. It does this by connecting to a cellular network provided by a mobile network operator. In addition to telephony, modern mobile phones also support a wide variety of other services such as text messaging, MMS, email, Internet access, short-range wireless communications (infrared, Bluetooth), business applications, gaming and photography. Mobile phones that offer these more general computing capabilities are referred to as smartphones. The first hand-held mobile phone was demonstrated by Dr Martin Cooper of Motorola in 1973, using a handset weighing 2 kg.[1] In 1983, the DynaTAC 8000x was the first to be commercially available. In the twenty years from 1990 to 2010, worldwide mobile phone subscriptions grew from 12.4 million to over 4.6 billion, penetrating the developing economies and reaching the bottom of the economic pyramid.[2][3] Contents [hide]
