The Feast of the Assumption

The Assumption of Mary recognizes the unique position of her being a superlative human person, who was taken body and soul to heaven. In some way, Mary’s Assumption makes her a “hero” figure for us, her fellow human beings, because she was a participant in her Son’s Resurrection and an anticipation of the

resurrection of other Christ followers.

This year on the Feast of the Assumption the general dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation in the Diocese of Rockville Centre will end for all who are in good health. How apropos that the dispensation ends on this feast.

At the Marriage Feast of Cana, when the hosts risked the embarrassment of a shortage of wine, Mary approached the “hospitality workers” and said to them of her Son, “Do as He tells you.” This advice was timeless for it can be applied to all Catholics in every day and age: love God, love your neighbor, love yourself; be people of compassion and forgiveness. Of course, this requires us to be in imitation of Mary when, at the Annunciation, her “yes” was the beginning of allowing God into her life. Let us join with Mary’s “yes”, as we give ourselves the opportunity, as she did, to be perfected through our union with Christ.

Mary, we ask you to help us to find peace within ourselves through your Son, Jesus. Through your intercession, may we be inspired to greater trust and hope in our ability to live our lives, as you did yours, and to bring Christ to the world. ST. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary to be a dogma of faith: “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.”

Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. As a solemnity, it holds a higher rank and therefore replaces the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time on the liturgical calendar.

In his Angelus message of August 15, 2018, Pope Francis tells us that “The wondrous reality of the Assumption of Mary reveals and confirms the unity of the human person and reminds us that we are called to serve and glorify God with our whole being, soul and body.”
