2018-19 ANNUAL REPORT LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR/CEO AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD

This has been an exciting year at Discovery Lab and with it came many new opportunities and challenges.

From Animationland to Circus! Science Under the Big Top, we have been proud to bring some exciting and engaging exhibits to Discovery Lab—continuing to make every visit full of new and different experiences.

Guided by our mission, the museum connects everything we do to play. From delivering outreach programs to creating day camps to designing and building new exhibits, the museum strives to make meaningful play an important learning tool and connector for families.

This year, we also rose to the challenge of completing our initial capital campaign goal by raising over $45 million. With groundbreaking for the new site just on the horizon, Discovery Lab is thrilled to see what the future holds and looks forward to magnifying the museum’s impact at our new permanent site in the Gathering Place.

The following pages document our organizational persistence and what makes “play” so important to our mission. We are thankful and appreciative for all of our supporters who help make Discovery Lab accessible and engaging to the community.

Sincerely,

Raymond J. Vandiver, Ph.D. Jeremy Stanford Executive Director/CEO 2018-19 President TCM Board of Directors MISSION To inspire children, connect families, and build community through exploration, exhibits, programming, and play. In Summer 2021, Discovery Lab plans to open it’s doors at a new children’s museum/science center anchoring the southern end of A Gathering Place for Tulsa on Riverside Drive. The work has already begun to innovate and prototype unique, world-class experiences for the new 50,000 square foot museum.

Last year, Discovery Lab announced that the new museum will provide space, curriculum, and educators serving as the Tulsa Public Schools (TPS) STEM Center. Discovery Lab will provide hands-on STEM learning experiences for 24,000 TPS students, in pre-K through sixth grade.

The new museum and education center will also have the capacity to continue to provide services for other local and regional school districts as well. LOBECK TAYLOR FAMILY FOUNDATION ORIGINAL EXHIBIT DESIGN CHALLENGE

In 2015, Discovery Lab launched its “Exhibit Design Challenge” with the creation of the Challenge Labs incorporated as a portion of the Team Up! exhibition in the Main Hall of the museum. Through a grant from the Charles & Lynn Schusterman Foundation, the museum approached students in the Tulsa community to participate in the design, development, and prototyping of collaborative challenges. Through a generous grant from the Lobeck Taylor Family Foundation, the exhibit design challenge continues.

In April, after a period of four to eight weeks, the student groups present their design MORE THAN notebooks, presentations, and/or prototypes to board members and directors from Discovery Lab. In May, the winning design(s) is selected to be further prototyped and developed into full exhibits and is announced at an after-hours event at Discovery Lab. At the museum, the students and their families can meet other students who have 200 participated in the challenge. STUDENT PARTICIPANTS

Currently, 150-200 students in Bixby and Broken Arrow High Schools’ sophomore Principles of Engineering classes, and students in multiple grades in Jenks Public Schools participate in this challenge yearly and consistently produce unique ideas and prototypes for buildout by the museum. Juniors in the Math and Engineering program at Central High School will be joining the challenge during the 2019-2020 school year. SPECIAL ELECTRIC EVENTS LIME GALA
