NORTHERN LIGHTS ADVENTURE IN ICELAND DAY 1, Early morning arrival to Iceland. Your private driver will be waiting for you at arrival hall.

He escorts you to private vehicle and takes for breakfast before next domestic flight North Iceland.

NORTHERN LIGHTS ADVENTURE IN ICELAND Leave Reykjavík behind and board a domestic flight heading north, your destination being the mystical Lake Mývatn nature reserve.

On arrival at Akureyri airport, meet your local guide who will take you through the area of Lake Myvatn. Visit their home and listen to their stories of how people live in this remote region. You’ll have a chance to taste bread baked with the geothermal heat from Geysers, smoked arctic char and lamb. Stepping off the beaten track visit a local farm smokehouse to learn about the art of cold smoked food and visit the steaming grounds in Bjarnarflag where the famous Geysir bread is baked. You will also explore the boiling mud pits of Hverir.

Included Farm to Table Lunch at Vogafjós restaurant. After Lunch visit Dimmuborgir Lava fields and explore this incredible maze of lava pillars. The last stop in the Mývatn area will be the Höfði region where lava fields meet the lake which is famous for being the land North of the Wall in the TV series Game of Thrones

NORTHERN LIGHTS ADVENTURE IN ICELAND Lake Mývatn Villa is situated on the shores of Lake Mývatn, a 40 minute drive from Akureyri, the largest town in northern Iceland. Built to replace a derelict farmhouse, this outstanding, architecturally designed home, nominated for the prestigious Mies Van der Rohe European award for architecture, captures an abundance of natural light and cross ventilation with its floor to ceiling windows and window “boxes”. Framing different aspects of the stunning scenery surrounding the home site is a recurring theme throughout the villa.

Aurora borealis are a natural phenomena. The bright dancing lights of the aurora are actually collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun that enter the earth's atmosphere.

Auroral displays appear in many colours although pale green and pink are the most common. Shades of red, yellow, green, blue, and violet have been reported. The lights appear in many forms from patches or scattered clouds of light to streamers, arcs, rippling curtains or shooting rays that light up the sky with an eerie glow.

NORTHERN LIGHTS ADVENTURE IN ICELAND DAY 2,

Today enjoy a Super Jeep adventure to Magnificent Waterfall Dettifoss. During this day you will not only visit these incredible but also learn of the rich local culture and traditions of the area.

You will drive east from Lake Mývatn and stop at three amazing waterfalls. These waterfalls from the East bank are only accessible by Super Jeeps. Dettifoss Waterfall is the most powerful waterfall in Europe, a 45m high and 100m wide waterfall with such power that standing next to it is an experience you will never forget.

A few minutes walk from Dettifoss where the water smoothly falls down the columnar basalt is waterfall.

On the edge of Jökulsá canyon is a spectacular waterfall called Hafragilsfoss. The rough landscape on the way and around the waterfalls is phenomenal and is a ´must see´!

NORTHERN LIGHTS ADVENTURE IN ICELAND At the end of the tour visit the Mývatn Nature baths where you can relax and unwind in the milky blue water. The water has a temperature of about 130°C when it arrives to the huge basin beside the lagoon itself forming an impressive, man-made hot spring.

Altogether the lagoon and the basin contains around 3.5 million litres of water with a temperature of 36 – 40°C. The characteristics of the water are unique in many ways.

It contains a large amount of minerals is alkaline and well suited for bathing.

NORTHERN LIGHTS ADVENTURE IN ICELAND DAY 3,

Today you will explore the unique Lofthellir cave, a permafrost Ice-Cave inside a lava tunnel. It has incredible ancient ice formations. The drive to the cave leads you through rugged tracks past the volcano Mt. Hverfjall and along Lúdentarborgir crater row. Once you reach the roots of Mt.Hvannfell there is a 30 min guided hike across the lava fields to the entrance of Lofthellir cave. On arrival you will be provided with a helmet, headlamp and studded boots for better grip inside the ice cave.

Travel slowly and safely into the cave in a single line guided by your cave guide who will help you to move through the cave. The entrance of the cave is the narrowest part (approx. 1,5m) and you will need to crawl through. However, with every step you take into the cave opens up.

There is ice and water on the floor of the cave and the temperature inside is around 0°C. The cave is protected and privately owned by local landowners, only a limited number of guests are allowed.

NORTHERN LIGHTS ADVENTURE IN ICELAND After cave visit head to a secret location and meet a Musher who will drive your sled dog team. You will be introduced to the dogs and given a short demonstration before trying it for yourself!

Experience the ultimate ancient arctic adventure of travelling through the Icelandic wilderness, hot drinks will be included during the tour.

NORTHERN LIGHTS ADVENTURE IN ICELAND DAY 4, Explore Húsavík is a wonderful small town sometimes referred to as the whale-watching capital of Iceland. It is a unique adventure at sea – watching the wonders of nature in the beautiful surroundings of Skjálfandi Bay, sheltered by the stunningountains of Vík. This is where our roots lie, where our ancestors used to live in peace and joy for centuries, living in total harmony with the unpredictable and untamed nature of the North Atlantic

Lunch at one of Husavík restaurants or walk around the town’s harbour and centre. After lunch we visit Husavík Öl a Newly founded local micro brewery for a taste of the latest local Husavik beer and an introduction by the brewer.

End your day at Geosea Bathes enable you to enjoy nature in a unique manner. Thanks to the underground heat, the seawater in the baths is warm and comfortable and the mineral-rich water will caress your skin. While the warm sea works its miracles, you can enjoy the view of the mountain range to the west, Skjálfandi Bay beneath the cliffs and the Arctic Circle itself on the horizon.

Before leaving North behind heard towards Aldeyarfoss Waterfall surrounded by olumnar basalt. The basalt column and perfect circular water form make Aldeyarfoss an incredible pace for photography. waterfall has geologically interesting surroundings. Tumbling through a narrow passage into a wide basin, with black basalt columns that provide a stark contrast against the thrashing white foaming water, making it one of Iceland’s photographic gems.

Aldeyjarfoss is one of most impressive waterfalls on the Skjálfandafljót River’s route from Iceland´s biggest glacier the Vatnajökull glacier.

During winter the hike from the parking can be 2-3 km each way all depending on road and snow condition. The hike is not demanding but there are small hills we go up on the way to Aldeyjarfoss. We provide snow shoes for the hike and we hike at our guest´s speed.

WINTER 2019/20 NORTH ICELAND After late lunch at one of local restaurants direct transfer to Akureyri airport where you will board a domestic flight back to Reykjavík. Upon arrival in Reykjavík your private driver will take you directly to privately owned Eldar Lodge.

Horses came to Iceland with the Viking Age Scandinavians between 860 and 935 AD. In 982 AD the Icelandic Alþingi (Parliament) passed laws prohibiting the importation of horses into Iceland, thus ending crossbreeding. The breed has now been bred pure in Iceland for more than 1,000 years.

The Icelandic horse is a "five-gaited" breed, known for its sure-footedness and ability to cross rough terrain. As well as the typical gaits of walk, trot, and canter/gallop, the breed is noted for its ability to perform two additional gaits.
