WAYS OF BECOMING INVOLVED Preparation for Harpenden in Bloom is a year long process, starting in September with schools, pubs, churches, businesses and residents planning their gardens, floral displays, environmental projects and logo entries, this culminates in July with the judging of competitions and the prize giving ceremony. Planting of the flowerbeds in the High Street will take place on the Summer Planting Day, 3rd June 2007 commencing at 9.30am, meeting at the War Memorial on Church Green. Volunteers are invited to join in the planting on the day. Sponsorship of flowerbeds and hanging baskets in the Town is also an important part of the initiative, bringing life to the Town Centre, its Greens, Southdown and Batford. Once sponsored, Mr Hope, Winner of the flowerbeds and baskets are maintained by Harpenden Town Best Allotment Plot Council’s contractors, John O’Connor (Grounds Maintenance Ltd), who also give voluntary help with the Harpenden In Bloom initiative. S P O T L I G H T O N Harpenden Youth Town Council

Harpenden Youth Town Council is celebrating its 10th birthday in 2008! 2007 saw a very successful year for fund raising for our chosen charity, Harpenden Mencap. We raised a total of £372 at the Harpenden Carnival, Christmas Carnival and Summer Sounds ’07. Whilst fund raising at the Christmas Carnival, we took the opportunity to ask young people who live in Harpenden a variety of questions. These included; did they like living in Harpenden; did they feel safe; how easy was it to access fitness facilities and what they would like seen done to improve facilities in Rothamsted Park for young people. The results were very interesting with lots of young people saying how they liked living in Harpenden and that it they felt it was a friendly and safe town. However, on the downside, there was not a lot for them to do, there were not enough shops for young people and that traffic was a problem. It was a very useful exercise for the Youth Town Council to talk to their contemporaries and we will definitely be looking at some of these issues in the future. We have a variety of projects on the go at the moment, including promoting of use of reusable bags within the town and improving the access to fitness facilities for young people within Harpenden. We are currently planning Summer Sounds ’08 which will be on Saturday 12th July in Rothamsted Park. This is the third Summer Sounds concert, a free music event annually organised by young people, for young people, which in the past has included bands like Kiss My Brass and The Dregs. Last year 1,200 young people from St. Albans and Harpenden had a great day out in Clarence Park and we are looking to make Summer Sounds ’08 even more successful. We are looking for artists e.g. bands, solo artists and DJs who are interesting in performing at this event. Please contact us at the e-mail address below if you are interested. In May there will also be a youth music gig as part of the “Verulam Underground” series of events. This will take place in Harpenden Public Halls on Saturday 3rd May with doors opening at 6.00pm and bands playing from 7.00pm. Contact Harpenden Public Halls on Tel: 01582 762880 for further information. If you have an issue that affects you as a young person in Harpenden we would like to hear from you. You don’t have to become a member of the Youth Town Council to attend a meeting and we are interested in hearing what young people have to say. If you are interested in seeing what the Youth Town Council does then please contact Emma Payne on Tel: 07975 754862 or e-mail [email protected] Forum A4 Newsletter (124):Layout 1 12/2/08 13:32 Page 9 HARPENDEN TOWN COUNCIL C L O S E R T O T H E C O M M U N I T Y 2 0 0 8 - 2 0 0 9 RESIDENT QUESTIONNAIRE AND FREE PRIZE DRAW
