The excellent outcome Transport for London (TfL) secured from the 2010 Spending Review, which enabled Crossrail and the Tube upgrade to proceed and protected London’s extensive bus network, reflects both London’s position as the engine of the UK economy and TfL’s reputation for effective delivery. In March 2011, following the Spending Review, TfL published a Business Plan to 2014/15 setting out its plans to modernise London’s transport system, supporting the Mayor’s vision for London as a world-class city. This Business Plan update, for consideration as part of the Mayor’s Budget for 2012/13 - 2014/15, reflects TfL’s latest financial forecasts, and highlights progress made towards achieving the milestones set out in the published Business Plan together with any new developments. TfL remains on target to deliver against all its key milestones. By reaffirming TfL’s ongoing commitment to operational delivery and investment in London’s infrastructure, this update provides vital stability and continuity for customers, business groups and other stakeholders.

  • News Update for London's Museums
@LondonMusDev E-update for London’s Museums – 09 November 2020 The 4 week long national lockdown began on Thursday 05 November, meaning museums and galleries should now be closed in line with government guidance until at least Wednesday 02 December. It has been announced that some heritage locations can still be visited if they are outside – provided current social distancing rules are observed. You can find further information about that on the Gov.uk website. You can get an overview of all of the new national restrictions on the gov.uk website. We strongly advise that you continue to follow the news and government announcements, as they happen, over the coming days and weeks. Last week the government announced further extensions to the furlough scheme, to March 2021. The government will extend furlough payments at the original 80%, up to a maximum of £2,500 per employee. Employers will only need to cover pension and National Insurance contributions during the month of November, but can top up the remaining 20% of their staff salaries if they wish. To be eligible for this extension, employees must have been on the payroll by 30 October 2020, but they do not need to have been furloughed before that date. Workers who were made redundant in advance of the planned end of the furlough scheme on 31 October can be rehired under the current furlough extension. The relevant section is 2.4 in the policy paper which can be found here. The government has also announced that businesses required to close in England due to local or national restrictions will be eligible for Business Grants of up to £3,000 per month, dependent on their rateable value.

  • Lexicography and Linguistic Creativity*
http://lexikos.journals.ac.za Lexicography and Linguistic * Creativity Rosamund Moon, Department of English, University of Birmingham, Birmingham, United Kingdom ([email protected]) Abstract: Conventionally, dictionaries present information about institutionalized words, phrases, and senses of words; more creative formations and usages are generally ignored. Yet text and corpus data provide ample evidence of creativity in language, showing that it is part of ordi- nary linguistic behaviour and indeed often systematic. This article looks at four specific types of lexical creativity in English: figurative meaning, word formation, idioms, and spelling. Focusing on selected examples, it discusses corpus evidence and then treatment in (principally) three recent monolingual dictionaries for learners of English. It argues that, even taking into account the pedagogical function and limited scope of these diction- aries, more could be said about creative aspects of lexis, and the systematicity of creative usage. This would be of benefit and interest to dictionary users, and empower them. Keywords: AFFIXATION, CORPUS, CREATIVITY, DICTIONARY COVERAGE, ENGLISH, FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE, IDIOMS, LEXICOGRAPHY, NEOLOGISM, NORMATIVENESS, SPELLING, WORD FORMATION Opsomming: Leksikografie en taalkreatiwiteit.
