Discussion – What do we do?

ACTIVITIES  Calculate a living wage for HPEC o Lobby local employers o Campaign  Microfinance (trenval-ish)  Focus on children in poverty  Create a face for poverty, engage a champion  Community gardens  Improved communication between partners, include awareness of each other  Define ‘community’  Anti-stigma re poverty  Create empowering opportunities

STRUCTURE  United Way infrastructure  Have a narrow focus (find out why people are living in poverty)  Form committees with individual/specific interest (ie, food security, housing, political committee, champion engagement committee etc.)  Create ‘focused’ committees/initiatives  Expand on current participants  Issue focused  Impact oriented  Measurable outcomes  Advocacy  A plan, not a dream  Identify & Mobilize champions (policitcal, business, industrial development, media, faith communities etc)  New structure  A poverty round table  Smaller initiatives for targeted populations  Move from networking to collaboration  Targets and timelines 

APPROACHES  How do we reach out  Find a champion  Create a passion for people and for change  Take an action research approach; creating change through research and action  Empowerment/enrichment

OTHER  Non traditional/flexible hours (meeting the needs of clients and families  Food for learning/school rep  Broadening demographic or partnerships  Advocacy needs new and more information
