Happy New Year 2018 www.filipinosmakingwaves.com January 2018 VOL. 7, NO. 01 TORONTO, CANADA FILIPINO HERITAGE MONTH Canada to Recognize Filipinos’ Role By Teresa Torralba The Filipino diaspora in Canada is getting close to official federal recognition as Members of Parliament (MPs) push for legislation that would set aside June of every year as Filipino Heritage Month. A similar measure has been introduced in the Ontario leg- islature, the provincial parliament, in December, which, if passed, would be implemented province-wide. On the local level, the Toronto City Council voted in No- vember to have June as Filipino Heritage Month in Toron- to, Ontario's capital, coinciding with the celebration of Philippine independence day on June 12. Salma Zahid, MP for Scarborough Centre, said on Thurs- day, Jan. 18, that she filed a motion in Parliament which "recognizes the contributions of the Filipino community have made to the socio-economic fabric" of Canada. • 20 Century Ends
New Year‟s Celebration 2013 20th CENTURY ENDS ANKIND yesterday stood on the threshold of a new millennium, linked by satellite technology for the most closely watched midnight in history. M The millennium watch was kept all over the world, from a sprinkle of South Pacific islands to the skyscrapers of the Americas, across the pyramids, the Parthenon and the temples of Angkor Wat. Manila Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle said Filipinos should greet 2013 with ''great joy'' and ''anticipation.'' ''The year 2013 is not about Y2K, the end of the world or the biggest party of a lifetime,'' he said. ''It is about J2K13, Jesus 2013, the Jubilee 2013 and Joy to the World 2013. It is about 2013 years of Christ's loving presence in the world.'' The world celebration was tempered, however, by unease over Earth's vulnerability to terrorism and its dependence on computer technology. The excitement was typified by the Pacific archipelago nation of Kiribati, so eager to be first to see the millennium that it actually shifted its portion of the international dateline two hours east. The caution was exemplified by Seattle, which canceled its New Year's party for fear of terrorism. In the Philippines, President Benigno Aquino III is bracing for a “tough” new year. At the same time, he called on Filipinos to pray for global peace and brotherhood and to work as one in facing the challenges of the 21st century. Mr. Estrada and at least one Cabinet official said the impending oil price increase, an expected P60- billion budget deficit, and the public opposition to amending the Constitution to allow unbridled foreign investments would make it a difficult time for the Estrada presidency.

The myth of the unbeatable fighter is just that, a myth. In what will go down as the single most memorable UFC fight in history, Ronda Rousey was not only defeated, but systematically destroyed by a fighter and a coaching staff that had spent years preparing for that night. On 2/28, Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey were the two co-headliners on a show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The idea was that Holm, a former world boxing champion, would impressively knock out Raquel Pennington, a .500 level fighter who was known for exchanging blows and not taking her down. Rousey was there to face Cat Zingano, a fight that was supposed to be the hardest one of her career. Holm looked unimpressive, barely squeaking by in a split decision. Rousey beat Zingano with an armbar in 14 seconds.

  • Fall of Grace: Nora Aunor As Cinema 46
Flores / Fall of Grace: Nora Aunor as Cinema 46 FALL OF GRACE: NORA AUNOR AS CINEMA Patrick D. Flores University of the Philippines [email protected] Abstract Nora Aunor is enlisted in this speculation as a medium in the register of both the cinema and the transmission of spirit. The key trajectory is the oft-cited film Himala, which opens up a conceptual space for mediumship, the technology of the actress, her biography and corpus of art, and the devotion to her person. The essay constellates a set of texts including the sculpture in honor of Elsa, the main character of Himala, the film Silip, and the life of a fan. Nora, the performative vessel of Elsa, becomes fundamentally cinematic. It is through her that Elsa is fleshed out as a miracle worker of vexing potency. Nora is herself a testament to the transformative potential of the technology of the cinema. Keywords devotion, film, image, medium, spirit, voice About the Author Patrick D. Flores is Professor of Art Studies at the Department of Art Studies at the University of the Philippines, which he chaired from 1997 to 2003, and Curator of the Vargas Museum in Manila. He is Adjunct Curator at the National Art Gallery, Singapore. He was one of the curators of Under Construction: New Dimensions in Asian Art in 2000 and the Gwangju Biennale (Position Papers) in 2008. • Series 139 Playland Phonograph
Westchester County Archives Series 139 2199 Saw Mill River Road Elmsford, New York 10523 Playland Phonograph Collection (914) 231-1500 1911‐1970 (bulk late 1920s‐1950s) Playland Phonograph Collection, 1911-1970, bulk late 1920s-1950s Series 139 Approximately 650 phonographs. Unarranged. Phonographs – both 10 and 12 inch – played from the Playland Music Tower and possibly the Playland Ice Casino. The collection includes classical music as well as popular tunes, including some Hawaiian-themed music. The collection is divided into five parts – a set of numbered records; numbered and unnumbered album collections; loose phonographs, and phonographs that were housed in their original album jackets. The album jackets have Braille identification tags because the disc jockey who worked at the Playland Music Tower was blind. There are two different indexes on note cards for the phonograph albums, but neither one appears to be complete or clear as to its exact use. Therefore, a new index has been completed by Archives’ volunteers. Please note: The Archives does not have playback equipment necessary to listen to the phonographs that make up this collection. The five subseries of this collection can be more fully described as follows: 1. A set of numbered records. These phonographs have individual number labels on them and run up through number 998. Each individual phonograph has 2 numbers on it – one for each side. However, the collection is not complete and there are only about 350 individual phonographs in this group. They were originally housed in 39 cardboard cases that held several individual phonographs. Due to the poor condition of these cases they were disposed during processing, although the case number was recorded.
