#1 Provence Pedal along quiet roads, deep into a landscape of dazzling colour

WRITTEN BY HARVEY DOWNARD, HEAD OF CYCLING

’ve been fortunate enough to visit Provence regularly over the last few years and each I time my affinity for the region grows stronger. There’s something about the landscape, the people and the warm Mediterranean weather that encourages a calmer, slower way of life upon you, which is exactly what I am looking for on holiday.

As a racing cyclist, I find myself climbing onto a road bike whenever I visit. Provence is one of France’s cycling heartlands with plenty of breathtaking routes, my favourites are Mont Ventoux PROVENCE IS CRISS-CROSSED and Gorges de la Nesque. WITH QUIET ROADS THAT I’ve never been able to WEAVE THROUGH VINEYARDS, put into words how great FRAGRANT LAVENDER FIELDS it feels to reach the top of AND PRETTY VILLAGES such iconic climbs, nor to describe the overwhelming, primal enjoyment of picking up speed on the descent. Suffice to say, I strongly recommend any cyclist experiences it for themselves.

It’s not just a region for lycra-clad types though. The predominantly rural nature means the region is criss-crossed by quiet roads that weave through verdant vineyards, past fragrant lavender fields and into pretty villages. These quiet roads and the ever-increasing number of cycle paths make it an ideal place for a more leisurely cycling tour.

Having visited eight times in the last four years, I think it speaks volumes that, along with many of our clients, I am already planning my return in 2020.

There is no shortage of things to see, with history and wine buffs keenly provided for. I enjoyed seeing the local camaraderie at the farmers market, and it was a pleasure to see all the locally grown vegetables on our plates in the evenings.

My favourite ride was the roundtrip between Montsoreau and Saumur along the excellently signposted Loire à Vélo route. A pretty easy route with a few short inclines, it includes riverside paths, passes old troglodyte dwellings and a stretch through hilltop vineyards. From a short ascent you are rewarded with stunning views of the Loire Valley below and Château de Saumur, which really encompasses the experience of cycling in this part of the world.

#3 Bordeaux The best of everything: a vibrant city, wonderful vineyards, and oysters on the beach

WRITTEN BY ANDY GRAY, BSPOKE DESTINATION MANAGER

here is always so much to learn about in this part of the world, with its rich culture and Thistory as well as the renowned wine and delicious dishes that perfectly complement each other. St-Émilion, Pomerol, Margaux and Sauternes are just a few of the globally known fine wines that hail from the region. The cycling routes vary between flat riverside paths and scenic coastal routes to the undulating hills through the vineyards. #5 Asturias Welcome to the heart of Spanish authenticity

WRITTEN BY HARVEY DOWNARD, HEAD OF CYCLING

nknown by many, this northern region in Spain steals all the charm of a traditional U coastal region without the crowds. Authentic fishing villages and humble tapas bars bring the otherwise green wilderness and dramatic coastline to life. We recommend learning a couple of basic Spanish phrases to win the hearts of the locals and earn yourself a welcoming grin.

Dubbed as Green Spain, AUTHENTIC FISHING VILLAGES Asturias lives up to its AND HUMBLE TAPAS BARS billing as a spectacularly BRING THE OTHERWISE GREEN verdant stretch of Spain’s WILDERNESS AND DRAMATIC northern coastline. The COASTLINE TO LIFE landscape has similarities with other Atlantic regions such as Brittany, Cornwall and Ireland, with rugged coastal cliffs and countless hidden coves. Similarities end abruptly when moving inland, as peaks rise high above the sea, the most impressive of which form the Picos de Europa range, one of the most photogenic mountain ranges in the world.

The cycling tends to follow the coast – normally from east to west – along the Camino de Santiago towards Santiago de Compostela. The coastal routes are easy going and take you through charming towns with abundant fresh seafood that are a delicious, if not a little decadent, mid-ride meal. Those looking for a more strenuous ride should turn inland to the spectacular mountain roads. Steep-sided river valleys and quiet, twisting roads take you between the rugged, medieval hamlets.

I loved the surprises along the way like cycling out of dense forests to be greeted with an ancient fortress or castle perched on a rock. Inland from Porto is the outstanding Douro Valley where dramatic hills are carved from the river, and fertile valleys produce world- famous red wine and Port. Pedal with ease across the verdant hills and stunning mountain terrain on an e-bike, saving your energy for the scenic views and wine tastings. I love taking a boat trip along the river, looking up at the hills carpeted with vines while drifting downstream.

Both the Atlantic Coast and the Douro Valley offer contrasting yet spectacular scenery as you cycle through the region. For me, a highlight of cycling in northern Portugal is being rewarded with either a cooling swim in the Atlantic or a well earned glass of red wine after a day in the saddle.

#9 Alentejo Pedal through peaceful Portugal

WRITTEN BY MARTON KOVACS, CYCLING EXPERT

ne of Portugal’s main draws has to be the weather. This year-round southern Oregion has mild winters and gorgeous summers. Cycling south towards Sagres from Lisbon, I loved the beautiful scenery. Fields bursting with sunflowers, groves of plump olives and spectacular views across the Atlantic and the craggy coastline.

I loved the laidback attitude of the locals in the whitewashed town of Vila Nova de Milfontes, with its pristine sand beaches and scenic walking routes. The town is surrounded by the Vincentina National Park, with abundant local flora and fauna and postcard-perfect views. After a day in the saddle, I was grateful for delicious fresh seafood caught by local fishermen in the popular restaurant, Tasca do Celso - plates piled high with prawns, squid, clams as well as stingray and locally made FIELDS BURSTING WITH sheep’s cheese. Perfect with a SUNFLOWERS, GROVES bottle of Alentejo wine. OF PLUMP OLIVES AND If you have time, I recommend SPECTACULAR VIEWS spending a couple of days in ACROSS THE ATLANTIC Lisbon. The Portuguese city has fabulous architecture including the enormous Jerónimos Monastery in Belém and the dominant São Jorge Castle with panoramic views over Lisbon’s rooftops. My favourite thing to do is potter around the city with my eyes peeled for colourful azulejos tiles that decorate churches, houses and even park seats, stopping for a custardy pastel de nata when I feel peckish.

#10 South Tyrol Great cycle paths through a naturally beautiful region

WRITTEN BY SACHA PETERS, HEAD OF MARKETING

he South Tyrol is without doubt my favourite part of Europe. I could rave about T the world-class scenery, food, hospitality and wine, but what really wins a place in my heart is that it is a cycling paradise. The geography of the region sees high alpine peaks latticed with deep valleys.

Each major valley in the region sees at least one cycle route running through it, with countless mountain passes branching off and up into the hills at regular intervals. The routes converge in the Adige Valley, where they join one of the world’s best developed cycle paths, linking charming towns like EACH MAJOR VALLEY Bolzano, Trento, Riva del Garda IN THE REGION SEES and Verona. Keen cyclists may like AT LEAST ONE CYCLE to even tackle some of the well- ROUTE RUNNING known routes of the Giro d’Italia. WRITTEN BY GEORGE ABRAHAM, CYCLING EXPERT

pain’s Basque Country runs parallel to the Atlantic, with back to back Snatural parks as you veer inland. Cycling through the region is exceptional with stunning coastline and countryside, but I found the renowned surfing and delicious cuisine also strong contenders for my attention. Arriving into Bilbao, I was impressed with the contemporary architecture, notably the emblematic Guggenheim Museum and Zubizuri Bridge that is like marmite to the locals. From this fascinating city, you can either head south to follow the Ebro river to the vineyards of La Rioja or go west along the coast to Ribadesella.

The leisurely coastal route through Basque Country, Cantabria and Asturias passes sweet coastal villages and towns, and I found the sea breeze a great natural cool down.
