Philadelphia Commemorates 150th Anniversary of the Civil EVERYONE WELCOME! Living Water Baptist Church War with Parade Procession and Historic Re-enactors International Ministry his April 15 marks 150 years since President Lincoln called for volunteers to defend the nation’s capital, which began TPhiladelphia’s part in a four-year battle that would later be referred to as the Civil War. Easter Services To commemorate this historic event and raise public awareness of Philadelphia’s pivotal role in the Civil War, Mayor Michael A. Nutter will join approximately 500 military and civilian re-enactors including Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Sunday,April 24 • 10 a.m. Douglass, Octavius V. Catto (appearing courtesy of Historic Philadelphia), Union troops, infantry, artillery, and cavalry. The parade will also include period and modern bands and the Armed Services. The parade, sponsored by the Civil War History Consortium of Greater Philadelphia, will begin at the National BIBLE TALK EVERY THURSDAY 7 PM - 8:30 PM Constitution Center, Saturday, April 16 at 10:00 a.m. After a brief program at the Union League of Philadelphia, the parade will end at the intersection of Broad Street and Washington Avenue. The day’s events will end with a Civil War-themed 7501 Brookhaven Rd., Philadelphia, PA 19151 gala at the Union League. www.livingwaterbcim.org • 215-205-6905 “We wanted to create an event that would draw attention to Philadelphia’s Civil War history and appeal to a broad audi- ence. Military parades were a huge part of city life at that time and would have been a familiar sight to Civil War LIVING WATER COMMUNITY CENTER COMING SOON! Philadelphians,” explained John Meko, chair of the Consortium and director of the Foundations of the Union League. “This parade isn’t just about the pageantry—we’re paying tribute to all Philadelphians who gave their time and in many cases GRAND OPENING • Sat. June 25 • 10 AM - 2 PM their lives to preserve the Union and secure freedom for fellow Americans.”

The parade follows the route taken by the first troops who left the city in 1861 beginning at 525 Arch Street and ending at Broad & Washington. Military re-enactors will provide vignettes of life as a Civil War soldier, including drills and demonstrations of horseman- ship, scenes of camp life, demonstrations of horsemanship, weapons care, medical and surgical procedures, and related activities. Civilian re-enactors will portray domestic and leisure time activities. “When we planned this parade, we planned it to honor all Union Troops during the Civil War, not just those who left in April 1861,” commented Temple University professor Andy Waskie, the parade marshal and re-enactor known for his portrayal of General George Gordon Meade, victor of the Battle of Gettysburg and a Philadelphia native son. “We have invited all Union re-enactors, regardless of when their units formed. This includes the eleven regiments of U. S. Colored Troops who trained at Camp William Penn beginning in 1863 and whose story is only now receiving the attention it rightly deserves.” “We also want to honor the service of the civilian population,” Waskie continued. “Philadelphia’s role was crucial to the success of the Union cause in the Civil War, and this parade is an important way to call attention to both the drama and the complexity of that story.” Additional information, including the parade route and a calendar of area events from April – early July, can be found at http://www.civilwarphilly.net/parade.
