OphiolitecomplexofDemirKapijaͲGevgelija BlažoBoev*,IvanBoev FacultyofNaturalandTechnicalSciences,GoceDelēevUniversityŠtip,RepublicofMacedonia;*[email protected]  OphiolitecomplexofDemirKapijaͲGevgelijaisthelargestblockof theVardaroceaniclithosphere preservedandsituatedinthecentralsubzoneoftheVardarzone.ThecomplexhasaNWͲSEstrike dippingtowardsnorthwest.IntheterritoryoftheRepublicofMacedonia,itis50kmlongand25km wide.ThecomplexextendsfurthersouthintheterritoryofneighbouringGreecewhereitisknown asGevgelliseries.ThenorthwestpositionofthecomplexsituatedinMacedoniaiscoveredbyUpper Eocene–PliocenelayersoftheTikveshvalley.Towardssoutheastitiscovered,inpart,byPliocene– QuaternarylayersextendingfurthersouthtotheterritoryofNorthernGreece.Investigationscarried outsofaronthegeology,tectonicsandlithostratigraphyoftheophiolitecomplexdeterminedthe followinggeologicstructure:aformationofgabbrosandaccompanyingplutons;aveincomplex;a formationofmassivebasalts;aformationofspilitizedpillowbasalts;aspilite–keratophyrelevel;a basaltchertformation;aflyschformationandcarbonateformationofUpperTithonianage. The gabbroic formation is composed predominantly of fineͲgrained and mediumͲgrained clinopyroxene gabbros, rarely of olivine gabbros, pyroxene gabbros with olivine, troctolites and amphibolegabbrosandquiterareareserpentinizeddunitesandhornblendeperidotitesaswellas dykesofbasalts,gabbropegmatites,aplites,–porphyryandquartzdiorites.Thepresenceof various types of intrusive and vein type rocks are a result of magmatic differentiation and the processesofamphibolitization. Ultrabasics are present as tectonically forced masses along fault structures or occur along with troctolites. They are present as serpentinized dunites, amphibolized peridotites as well as websterites. They are made up of hornblende, serpentine, actinolite, olivine and accessory magnetite. Aveincomplexoccursinthecontactpartsofthegabbroicformationandtheformationofmassive basaltsasawelldeveloped200to300(maximum500)meterszonemadeupofbasalt–dolerite dykesandsegmentedgabbromasses.Themineralogicalcompositionissimilartothemassivebasalt andgabbroicmass. Massive basalts are found in the central and eastern portions of the ophiolite complex. They are presentasfineͲgrainedophioliteandintersertalcompositionwithoccasionaloccurrencesofentire recrystallization of the glass groundmass. They are altered rocks in which feldspars are heavily albitized. Basic plagioclases occur as relic (labradorite – bytownite). Femic minerals are augite, hornblende,secondarychlorite,epidote,magnetite,andapatite. Spilite–keratophyreleveloccursinthetopmostportionsoftheformationofbasalticpillowlavas.It ispresentasaconcentrationofdykesandoutpouringsofkeratophyremasses,quartzkeratophyres, rhyolitesandseldomandesiteswhichformkeratophyreleveltogetherwithspilitizedbasalts.These aciddifferentiatesoccuraspinktored,grey–greentogrey–whiterockswithmicroporphyriticto porphyriticstructurecomposedofalteredfeldspathicmasseswithrelicsofplagioclase(oligoclase– albite),K–feldspar,alsochlorite,quartz,epidote,seldomcrystalsofhornblende,chloritizedbiotite andcalcite. The upper parts of the ophiolitic complex are composed of chert formations, flysch formations coveredbythemassiveUpperTithonianreeflimestones.
