Welcome Aboard

Things turn out the best for the people who make the best out of the way things turn out. ~ Titus Livius (known as Livy in English) | Roman historian ~

Welcome back everyone! We have missed your smiling faces and camaraderie!

We want to extend a FELT WELCOME to our new members who have joined DCW following Delta’s recent Retirement and Voluntary Departure Programs. Congratulations as well to our members who recently went from active to retired; we wish all of you the very best in this next chapter of your lives. We have begun our 2020 membership drive. Our automated renewal notices will be sent on September 1. Please see the MEMBERSHIP NEWS section on page 2 for details. We certainly hope all of you have somehow managed to make the best of these past eight months since we last gathered during our January 2020 luncheon, learning and talking about camellias – remember? Future gatherings, for now, are in our thoughts and we will make the best of them when we can gather again … Stayed tuned! In the meantime, we do have some wonderful news! We will have TWO online fundraising events this fall instead of our customary luncheons. Since we had to cancel our annual fundraiser in March due to COVID-19, we have kept our wine and silent auction items safe at our DCW office at the G.O. and at members’ homes. Using our GiveSmart mobile bidding provider, we will host the following online events:

Wine Event September 19 - 26, 2020

Grand Prize Raffle and Silent Auction October 12 - 22, 2020 We will allow participation by our entire membership with the stipulation that we cannot ship certain items. Items will be available for pickup by you or a friend at a centrally located pickup destination for anyone living in and around . Social distancing rules will apply, and masks must be worn. For details, please see the SPECIAL EVENTS section on pages 4-5. We would like to congratulate Gloria Walker who is retiring from her twelve years of volunteer service as our DCW Treasurer! Please see our tribute to Gloria on page 3 and congratulate her when you can. We would have liked to honor Gloria at our customary first luncheon in September, but this nasty pandemic has postponed our planned HURRAH for her. Cheers Gloria!

Stay safe and stay tuned as we try to adapt to this new situation of not having our normal gatherings! Bless those who have endured misfortune and sadness since we last met. Love to All! They will retain full access to our website, receive emails/newsletters and will receive two more reminders to renew. ✓ LAPSED GROUP: If dues are not paid by the end of the grace period, they will be moved to this category for two years and will not receive any emails or monthly newsletters from DCW. During this time lapsed, members will receive two reminders to renew. September 2020 ~ The BRIEFING SHEET Page 3 of 11

A Big Delta Clipped Wings Thank You ! Thank you, Gloria… …for your thirteen years of dedicated DCW Treasurer duties! We are so grateful for your highly organized record keeping and keeping us on our toes to submit all our receipts as required for a 501(c)(3) organization. Suzi Modisett reports: “Working with me at a DCW fundraiser checkout table years ago when I was Co-Treasurer, Gloria and I were talking about Donna Wood, who had decided to step down from her 25+ years as DCW Treasurer/ Co-Treasurer. Gloria calmly said, ‘I will volunteer to be Co-Treasurer with you.’ What a blessing it was for someone to step up to fill Donna’s shoes!” September 2020 ~ The BRIEFING SHEET Page 4 of 11

In addition to her DCW Treasurer duties, Gloria was a very dedicated volunteer for one of our previous charities, Ladies Day Fund, Inc. DCW member Carole Lovelace (Founder and President of Ladies Day, Inc.), says, “I admire Gloria so much for her caring devotion and service to others. Her concern brought the attention of DCW to consider and choose Ladies Day Fund as one of its charities to support. Always a valuable friend to LDF ... also, truly DCW’s gift to have someone as meticulous as Gloria, serve as Treasurer for so many years.” DCW member Paulette Johnson says, “In the late 60s Gloria worked in a high-rise building on Wall Street in ATT’s payroll and accounting department. From her office window she had a perfect view of the Statue of Liberty. Each day she would marvel at the cruise ships moving up and down the Hudson River … ‘Where was everyone going?’ One day when engaged in conversation with her supervisor about traveling, her supervisor suggested she apply as an airline stewardess, with the promise her job at ATT would be secured should it not work out. Well, the rest is history. , Ladies Day and Delta Clipped Wings have all benefited from her foresight to see the world. Her position as DCW Treasurer truly set the highest of standards. I am very glad to have met her along my journey and I am sure many of you have nothing but love for her as well.” Gloria, you get a “Feather in your Cap” for your volunteer service! 1150 Norfolk Dr. NW, Acworth, GA 30102 | [email protected] | FA class 01/06/1969 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As Gloria steps away from her treasurer duties, Sandy Chinn was appointed by Co-Presidents, Bettie Asip and Suzi Modisett, to act as interim Co-Treasurer with Sue Stone until our 2021 board elections.

DCW LIAISONS to CURE CHILDHOOD CANCER Kathy Larkin • [email protected] • (770) 333.8688 www.curechildhoodcancer.org Kathryn Wilson • [email protected] • (404) 502.3304

Each day, 43 families in the United States will hear the words “your child has cancer.” And while childhood cancer seems like an overwhelming problem, there are things we can do to help. CURE invests millions in life-saving research and your support – however big or small – will help to keep researchers moving forward until there is a cure for every child. September 2020 ~ The BRIEFING SHEET Page 6 of 11

CURE’s Impact Over the Last 10 Years Funded Provided Served $27,400,000 $1,677,296 113,876 in Research in Financial Assistance Meals in the Hospital

September’s CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH is a time to shine the light on the realities of childhood cancer, emphasize the importance of life-saving research, and join together to make a difference for children diagnosed. The situation is urgent – incidence rates are rising, and cancer remains the leading cause of death by disease for children. That’s why CURE invests millions in critical research that will lead to safer and more effective cures for kids. This year, the COVID-19 pandemic has put undue burdens on the parents of these children. They are faced with many restrictions at the hospital and additional expenses above and beyond what they were dealing with pre-COVID. If you would like to help these families, please consider purchasing a $25 gas card (QuikTrip, RaceTrac, BP, Shell) and/or a gift card from Kroger, Publix, Walmart, Target, etc. You may send the cards to Kathy Larkin, 2170 Vinings North Lane, Smyrna, GA 30080.

Together we can make sure that kids facing a cancer diagnosis can realize their dreams. Kathy and Kathryn Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see. ~ Mark Twain | American Writer ~

As we told you in an email in July, AHS has expanded their adoption program for veterans to include first responders and members of the National Association of Independent Truckers. Their updated program enables all animals to qualify for the program and the adoption process to be completed seamlessly. The adoption fee for animals 1 year of age and older will be 50% off and the adoption fee for animals younger than 1 year will be 10% off. To coincide with the change, they have updated the program name to the American Heroes Adoption Program. To learn more, go to https://atlantahumane.org/adopt/american-heroes.

Report by Christina Hill • AHS Director of Marketing and Communications AHS had a successful first month of our new American Heroes Adoption Program. We have had 11 adopters find their perfect match during the first month including River, a feline who is ready to go home in her carrier with her new family! Currently our adoption process is a mix of completely virtual and in-person appointments. We will continue to evaluate our processes to help more animals find loving homes during this time. In addition, we are continuing to provide free pet food and affordable veterinary care to pet owners impacted by COVID-19 and taking in animals from local shelters who need support. We are thankful to Delta Clipped Wings for their support of our adoption program to help animals find their perfect match! <<< RIVER’s new family

Celebrating 100 years of advocacy for the American soybean industry by Suzi Modisett, DCW Co-President The American Soybean Association honored my husband’s Fouts family on August 4th for their Indiana soybean pioneering efforts and the origin of the ASA at a 1920 event at Soyland Farm – across the road from our Hoosier Homestead farm. The unveiling of a new Indiana historic sign was cheered by 180

attendees at the “recreated” 1920 event. As in 1920, Purdue had planted a variety soybean plot for attendees to compare, this time with seeds from their seed vaults from each of the past 100 years. Govenor Eric Holcomb unveiled the sign and spoke at the event. Noah Fouts was Tom’s great-grandfather. CO-CHAIR • Janice Barfield Pause for a Moment [email protected]

“Pause for a moment” seems to have a deeper meaning right now as the world is forced to reconsider their lifestyle and thinking due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Certainly, it has affected our airline industry deeply as so many of our colleagues have had to make hard decisions about their careers. If only we could just “pause” and redo the past several months. Fortunately, many of us in Delta Clipped Wings have not had to make those hard decisions. Our hearts and prayers go out to those of you who had to make the very difficult decision to leave or to stay. And as much as we THINK we know the difficulty of those heart-rendering choices, we really can’t imagine. In thinking about all of this and trying to make some sense of normalcy out of chaos, I think it might help to remember what we learned during those many years of flying with the world’s greatest airline. First, it was always so important to have a GOOD BRIEFING before we even boarded the airplane to start our journey. We needed to know how many passengers to expect, any potential problems and, certainly, to recall our training skills. We were taught we could handle anything, and we did. Movies would be made about that and many people would find it hard to believe what we were called on to do. Then once we started our flight, it was necessary to STAY FOCUSED on what was at hand. More than once a life was saved, or a potential danger was redirected just because we noticed. Who doesn’t have a story of heroism made real by what happened on a routine flight that was “just a little turnaround” to the islands or an all-nighter across the pond that was usually so boring? But we knew … we knew, and we told each other because we had that wonderful “jumpseat therapy” where nothing was held back. Secrets came out and somehow, we found the courage we needed to do the impossible. I remember once thinking I could not work my rotation because I was grieving over the death of a loved one And then I saw a friend in the lounge who gave me a quick hug before I headed up for my flight. I was able to remain focused all day on my trip because of her hug. This brings me to what may be the most important lesson of all that many of us learned while flying. We always LOOKED OUT FOR EACH OTHER. Flight attendants have the reputation of being some of the friendliest people in September 2020 ~ The BRIEFING SHEET Page 9 of 11 the world; there’s a reason for that and it’s not because all of us were born with sparkling personalities or a 24/7 smile. We all come from different parts of the world and have our own ideas of things, but most of the time we always backed each other up … we were a team. It is hard to explain to an “outsider” what it feels like to be a flight attendant as there is an understanding, a bond even, with other airline people that is indescribable. All of this is to say, “Welcome to Delta Clipped Wings,” both new and old members. Right now, we may not know when we can get together; hopefully, it will be sooner rather than later, but we will continue to be here for each other. And for our newly retired folks, we celebrate and honor you and look forward to when we can give those congratulatory hugs. For those of you who are still flying, double hugs for you and great thanks for hanging in there … We are proud of all of you. Keep climbing, Delta pros, keep climbing!! Janice

www.deltaclippedwings.org 2020-21 MEMBERSHIP YEAR (Fiscal Year October 1, 2020 through September 30, 2021)

Delta Clipped Wings, Inc. (DCW) is a 501(c)(3) organization based in Atlanta, GA. Founded in 1957 by John Sutton, Superintendent of Passenger Service, and former stewardess, Jan Fairchild Jones, DCW has been charity-based since its inception. We are an amazing group of former and active Delta flight attendants who share a common bond through our memories and experiences while working in the In-Flight Service Department. This commonality provides a rich environment of friendship as we once again “work together” during our fundraising events in support of our charities: CURE Childhood Cancer; Atlanta Humane Society’s “American Heroes Adoption Program” and The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Membership dues support our annual operating expenses while our net fundraising proceeds are distributed wholly between our charities.

Members receive a monthly newsletter, THE BRIEFING SHEET, and have a choice to receive a biennially printed membership directory or to “opt out” and use our online directory.

We will not print/mail a 2020-21 “RED BOOK” directory. We now print the RED BOOK every two years to coincide with our biennial board elections. Member profiles may be found on our website at www.deltaclippedwings.org. Dues may be paid through the website or by check submitted with the application below. Dues paid after May 1st will be applied to the year following our fiscal year-end of September 30. The expiration date of October 31 in member profiles reflects a 30-day grace period. -- ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ (Print clearly) ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ cut ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ (Mail the bottom portion) ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ cut ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ ‐ (Print clearly) ‐ ‐ ‐ - - - - Dues: $25.00 DCW MEMBERSHIP FORM Check #: ______Date: ______FIRST: ______MAIDEN: ______LAST: ______ADDRESS: ______FLYING STATUS (A or R): ______CITY, STATE ZIP: ______SPOUSE: ______FA CLASS (mm/dd/yyyy): ______HOME PHONE: ______CELL PHONE: ______
