Madrid Close In
PREVIEW ISSUE FOUR – 24TH APRIL 2012 MADRID CLOSE IN REAL TAKE THE SPOILS IN THE EL CLASICO AND CLOSE IN ON THE SILVERWARE After a poor week for both sides in Europe, Real and Barca were desperate to grab a win against their biggest rivals on a dramatic, rain-lashed Saturday night at the Nou Camp. It was Real that grabbed the vital win and probably clinched the La Liga title. Los Merengues went ahead through German midfielders Sami Khedira and were comfortable for long periods, but Barca’s Chilean substitute Alexis Sánchez equalised with just 20 minutes remaining. Cristiano Ronaldo’s clinical strike just three minutes later settled the game with Madrid now seven points clear, with only four games remaining. Madrid coach José Mourinho named an very attacking team and his side began the better. Ronaldo’s early header from a corner brought a superb flying save from goalkeeper Víctor Valdés. His opposite number Iker Casillas was then quickly off his line when full-back Dani Alves dispossessed Sergio Ramos. The game was being played at a fearsome pace and French striker Karim Benzema brought the best out of Valdés again. Barca thought they had gone front when Alves had the ball in the net after a Cristian Tello run, but the youngster had been flagged offside. INSIDE THIS WEEK’S WFW Real’s brave start was rewarded when Pepe’s header from another corner was half- - RESULTS ROUND-UP ON ALL MAJOR stopped by Valdes and Khedira tackled an COMPETITIONS FROM AROUND THE hesitant Carles Puyol to push the ball into the WORLD net to put Madrid ahead. -
The Preferences of Sporting Cp Supporters: an Analysis Based on Promoted Youth Players
! ! THE PREFERENCES OF SPORTING CP SUPPORTERS: AN ANALYSIS BASED ON PROMOTED YOUTH PLAYERS Hugo Filipe Antunes de Abreu Master Dissertation In Marketing Supervisor: Dr. Paulo Rita, Professor of Marketing, ISCTE-IUL Business School Co-supervisor: Dr. Bradley Wilson, Senior Lecturer, School of Media and Communication, RMIT University, Australia April 2013 ! The preferences of Sporting CP Supporters: An analysis based on Promoted Youth Players ! ! ! ! ! “It’s not that I am not interested in playing for an English club, it’s more that I believe the best place for me to progress is at Sporting, where they give a lot of opportunities to young players. Maybe some players lose their heads when they go to big clubs because they think they are a big deal, I’m not sure.” - Eric Dier, 20 January 2011, www.dailymail.co.uk ! ! ! ! ! ! ""! ! The preferences of Sporting CP Supporters: An analysis based on Promoted Youth Players Thanks First of all I would like to thank to my supervisors: Dr Paulo Rita from ISCTE Business School (Portugal) and Dr Bradley Wilson from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (Australia) for all advices they gave me and for all time they invested to make this dissertation the best as possible. Their contribution was fundamental for the quality of this dissertation. There were also two crucial people who helped me with statistical software: Maria Inês Marques, who explained me some statistical procedures on SPSS, and Fernando Afonso, who taught me how to manage SPSS AMOS. I want to thank to all 1054 people who answered to my survey. Without them this study cannot be performed. -

FC Barcelona V Sevilla FC MATCH PRESS KIT Louis II, Monaco Friday, 25 August 2006 - 20:45 CET Final
FC Barcelona v Sevilla FC MATCH PRESS KIT Louis II, Monaco Friday, 25 August 2006 - 20:45 CET Final The 2006 UEFA Super Cup is very much a Primera División affair although some of the world's greatest names will be on show at the Stade Louis II when FC Barcelona take on Sevilla FC. The traditional European season curtain-raiser will be an all-Spanish occasion for the first time and it is also Monaco's maiden experience of a one-off duel between two clubs from the same country. Glory in May • Barcelona enter as Europe's premier team after a 2-1 victory against Arsenal FC in the UEFA Champions League final in Paris on 17 May, while Sevilla participate as UEFA Cup holders having triumphed 4-0 in Eindhoven against Middlesbrough FC a week before. • Both sides will start the defence of their European titles next month, while beginning their 2006/07 league programmes on the Monday after Monaco. Barcelona will travel to RC Celta de Vigo and Sevilla are at home against Levante UD. Previous meetings • The teams have met once before under UEFA auspices, in the 1995/96 UEFA Cup third round. The first leg in Seville finished 1-1 on 21 November, with Gheorghe Hagi cancelling out Davor Šuker's goal for the hosts just before half-time. Barcelona then won the 5 December return 3-1. All the goals came in the last 28 minutes, with José Mari Bakero, Gheorghe Popescu and Roger García on target for Barça and Gabriel Moya Sanz earning a consolation for Sevilla, who had José Miguel Prieto sent off. -
Statistical Assessment of Soccer Players
Statistical Assessment of Soccer Players by Mohammad-Amin Nabavi A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Science in Mathematics and Statistics Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2019 Mohammad-Amin Nabavi ABSTRACT This thesis examines the use of neural network modelling and ordinal logistic regression on a single season of data (2015-16) to score or rank soccer players. These scores and ranks are then compared with ones from FIFA EASports that are based on a much more extensive data set that includes more variables as well as historical data. Using repeated measures one-way ANOVA and subsequent multiple comparison testing, we conclude that a neural network model with ten nodes in one hidden layer is able to generate scores statistically similar to FIFA EASports, while ordinal logistic regression cannot. We confirm this result be also examining the ranks obtained by both the neural network model and the ordinal logistic regression model. Spearman rank correlations are also examined and confirm that a neural network with 10 nodes in one hidden layer also generates ranks statistically similar to FIFA EASports. We also demonstrate the use of association rule mining on one team’s data from the 2015-16 season to identify players and combinations thereof that are associated with winning (or not winning) a match. Analyses are based on data from the Italian Serie A League 2015-2016 season. ii Acknowledgements These past couple of years have proven to be the hardest period of my life so far. -
