Asia Society 725 Park Avenue at 70th Street New York City This program is 2 hours with no intermission New Sufi Sounds of Pakistan Performers Arooj Afab lead vocals Bhrigu Sahni acoustic guitar Jorn Bielfeldt percussion Arif Lohar lead vocals/chimta Qamar Abbas dholak Waqas Ali guitar Allah Ditta alghoza Shehzad Azim Ul Hassan dhol Shahid Kamal keyboard Nadeem Ul Hassan percussion/vocals Fozia vocals AROOJ AFTAB Arooj Aftab is a rising Pakistani-American vocalist who interprets mystcal Sufi poems and contemporizes the semi-classical musical traditions of Pakistan and India. Her music is reflective of thumri, a secular South Asian musical style colored by intricate ornamentation and romantic lyrics of love, loss, and longing. Arooj Aftab restyles the traditional music of her heritage for a sound that is minimalistic, contemplative, and delicate—a sound that she calls ―indigenous soul.‖ Accompanying her on guitar is Boston-based Bhrigu Sahni, a frequent collaborator, originally from India, and Jorn Bielfeldt on percussion. Arooj Aftab: vocals Bhrigu Sahni: guitar Jorn Bielfeldt: percussion Semi Classical Music This genre, classified in Pakistan and North India as light classical vocal music. Thumri and ghazal forms are at the core of the genre. Its primary theme is romantic — persuasive wooing, painful jealousy aroused by a philandering lover, pangs of separation, the ache of remembered pleasures, sweet anticipation of reunion, joyful union. Rooted in a sophisticated civilization that drew no line between eroticism and spirituality, this genre asserts a strong feminine identity in folk poetry laden with unabashed sensuality. -

IFFI 2007–Non-Feature Films Abhijit Ghosh-Dastidar The International Film Festival at Goa (November 07) offered beautiful, humane portraits in the non-features section of Indian Panorama. Buddhadeb Das Gupta's ''Naushad Ali—The Melody Continues" (Hindi, colour, 39 mins) is a tribute to Naushad Ali, the legendary music composer from Bombay's film world, and the film landscape of the times. The film commences with Dilip Kumar, the actor, visiting Naushad Ali, admitted in Bombay hospital. Naushad passed away in May 06. An 'alap' song, composed by Naushad and sung by Bade Ghulam Ali, from ''Moghal-e-Azam'', is at the debut of the sound track. The voice over states that Naushad was closely linked to Lucknow, where he was born in December 1919. The camera travels along the lanes and streets of Lucknow, with Moghal monuments in the background. Naushad's father was a munshi in court. Naushad had spent his childhood at his grandmother's house. His uncle, Allam, had a harmonium shop, and soon Naushad found a job in a musical instruments shop. He started watching films from the age of eight at the Royal Cinema hall. He was fascinated by the off screen musicians of silent films. Clips from musical silent films roll by. Babbar Khan coached Naushed on the harmonium. Naushad shifted to Bombay in 1937. He spent nights below a staircase. He joined DN Madhok's film production company, and made music for films like ''Mala'' and ''Prem Nagar'', for which he was paid Rs 300 only for each film. He composed classical music to fit the songs of Shamshad Begum in "Baiju Bawra''. -

The day started with a warm welcome by Prof. Ravi Sinha, Dean (Alumni & Corporate Relations). Prof. Devang Khakhar, Director of IIT Bombay gave the visiting alumni an overview of the Institute and its growth over the years. In his address, Prof. Khakhar informed how the Institute is growing in stature. “Today, IIT Bombay is the leading academic Institution in the field of research and development. IIT Bombay alumni have made significant contributions towards the growth of the Institute. Our aspiration is to see IIT Bombay among the top ranks of technical universities in the world.
