By Jacqui Neber

For some kids, being a or a pumpkin just doesn’t cut it—but it’s hard to know which out-of-the-box ideas will be on-trend. Luckily, we have an expert to help you sort through the thousands of costumes available to your kids. Rubin Beige of Rubie’s Costume Company in Westbury breaks down his top 10 most popular picks for Halloween 2019.

1. Spider-Man What kid doesn’t love Spidey? Thanks to recent installments in the Spider-Man franchise like Spider-Man: Into the Spider- Verse, the beloved red-and-blue hero comes out on top this year.

Halloween Guide 2019 2 nymetroparentsnymetroparents.com.com 2. Pennywise It might seem contradictory, but this kid-luring clown comes in at number two—just like IT Chapter Two, which was released in September to rave reviews. Just don’t watch if your kids are scared of clowns!

3. Fortnite character Kids love Fortnite, and they’ll love dressing up as a character from this uber-popular videogame.

4. Alien A classic is a classic. Try incorporating unique colors, metallics, and textures into your little one’s alien costume to make him the coolest extraterrestrial in the galaxy.

Halloween Guide 2019 3 nymetroparents.com 5. Witch costume for girls Another classic! You can complete your child’s witch costume with a broomstick and big floppy hat.

Halloween Guide 2019 4 nymetroparentsnymetroparents.com.com 6. Dinosaur Here’s where you can really get creative. Costume shops have dinosaur ensembles that are similar to costumes of many other animals. But there are also suits that completely your kid as a blow-up dinosaur. Be cautious when sending them out to trick or treat like this (safety first!)—and they’ll get plenty of laughs!

Halloween Guide 2019 5 nymetroparents.com 7. Renaissance costume for girls You know what they say: Everything old becomes new again. In this case, these fashions will be really old, but your child can rock them just the same. She can be a , townsperson, queen, and more. Maybe send her out with a turkey leg a la Medieval Times to complete the look.

8. Baby Shark Doo doo doo doo da-do! Your child can be the most popular—and cutest—fish of the year in this costume. You can complete the look by being Mommy Shark, too.

Halloween Guide 2019 6 nymetroparents.com 9. Unicorn Little girls and boys will love transforming in magical, cuddly unicorns on Halloween night. Unicorn costumes are plush, colorful, and on trend, making this the perfect costume for a creative kid.

10. Harley Quinn costume for girls Margot Robbie made Harley Quinn the most beloved character in Suicide Squad, and Quinn’s look will be a go- to for girls who aren’t afraid to be bold. You can use safe, temporary hair dye to create her red and blue pigtails, and let your child sample your makeup for Quinn’s bright red lips and captivating eyes.

Halloween Guide 2019 7 nymetroparents.com Halloween Problems: Solved Local parents share smart solutions to the trick-or-treat troubles that seem to haunt us all in October.

By Christina Vercelletto

Scary Situation: It’s downpouring. Solution: Sing in the rain. And strut and dance and eat. Nobody ever plans on a soggy Halloween, but, hey, we don’t live in Arizona. So it pays to have a Plan B. “We live on a close-knit block, and I always made sure we had a back-up plan by volunteering my house just in case,” says Camille Iorio, a mom of two in Queens. “One year I was put to the test. But somehow that’s the year everyone remembers.” Iorio recalls ordering pizza, setting up an impromptu ice cream sundae bar, hiding candy around her home scavenger- hunt style, and putting on a costume fashion show set to popular dance tunes. Even if you didn’t plan ahead, you can still make the best of a puddle muddle. Put on your

HalloweenHalloween GuideGuide 20192019 8 nymetroparents.com nymetroparents.com most colorful rain gear, grab a big umbrella, and take a couple photos to prove your family’s spirits can’t be dampened. Then head to the nearest mall. You’d be surprised how many stores give out candy on Halloween. And many malls hold some type of holiday festivities, like a costume parade or contest.

Scary Situation: Bedtime bellyaches after a candy supper. Solution: In a word: soup. Your regular sit- down dinner has about as much chance of happening on Oct. 31 as your kids not eating any Laffy Taffy until they get home. A few years back, Christine Rossetti, a mom of two in Nassau, took that problem and turned it into a new Halloween tradition. “I make Halloween soup. I only do it once a year, and now the kids look forward to it.” Rossetti says she asked her kids to decide on what kind, and they settled on chicken, but chock full of pastina and mini meatballs. “It’s usually pretty chilly when we get back, so it’s an easy sell. Even my picky son slurps it up.” And it’s something that can simmer in a slow cooker while you’re at work.

Scary Situation: The costume he’s been talking about all month is sold out. Everywhere. Solution: Take a picture of the character and ask your child what he likes about it: the metallic lightning bolt? The sword? The wand? The hair? The cape? The shade of red? “Accessories are your friend,” insists Jennifer Kelley, mom of two girls in Manhattan. “Make a beeline for the nearest big craft or party store,

Halloween Guide 2019 9 nymetroparentsnymetroparents.com.com and let your kid load up on extras to create something that keeps the spirit of the original.” Her daughter, Bella, had her heart set on Katniss when The Hunger Games first came out—but so did everyone else. Kelley saved the day by adding a wig and a bow and arrow to a too- small black jumpsuit she had in her closet, and voila! Bella made a great huntress, if not Miss Everdeen, exactly.

Scary Situation: The costume your little darling is begging for is a bit…mature. Solution: Deep breaths and a dose of perspective. This is a problem that seems to pop up only with female children. And, perhaps unsurprisingly, it seems to stress out dads especially. “What happened to a princess?” asked Michael Falcone, dad of two in Westchester, when his 10-year-daughter, Olivia, trotted out in a short, tight witch get up. “I kind of overreacted. But it was a shock. Year after year, she was always something sweet and cute. Then it was a miniskirt and purple eyeliner.” Falcone tried to make Olivia change, but tears—and the lack of an alternate—caused him to relent. His advice to other dads of

Halloween Guide 2019 10 nymetroparentsnymetroparents.com.com daughters? “Ask to see her costume before 3pm on October 31! Seriously, though, I worried she’d want to wear miniskirts and makeup all the time. She didn’t. I read way more into it that she did.” Indeed, what we see as sexy, a tween girl likely only thinks looks cool. So try not to read too much into her choice. If you can’t let her pick go, then consider allowing it with the addition of tights, a tank top, or other modest underpinnings.

Scary Situation: Your sister-in-law shows you her toddler’s costume. It’s the one you told her you had your heart set on for your baby. Solution: Feel the love. Okay, at least try to. This happened to me. I know it sounds petty, but I was peeved. A baby’s first Halloween costume is a sacred thing. It makes grandmas swoon like nothing else, is in more photos than any costume to follow, and will be fodder years later for trivia questions by teens trying to prove you don’t know them at all. I wanted to be able to answer, “You were a peapod! There never was a more adorable piece of produce!” without having to add “except for cousin Kenny.” Then a friend pointed out it was obvious she loved me and my baby a ton, and this seemed like an attempt to bond. So I let it go, after briefly considering switching my bambino to a cuter vegetable, like a carrot or radish, for spite. (This was not a proud moment.)

Halloween Guide 2019 11 nymetroparentsnymetroparents.com.com So you have two choices in this scenario: either change your child’s costume to Piglet to complement the new Pooh, maintaining individuality. Or smile and see it as adoration. It also helps to imagine what you would do if you and a friend showed up at a party in the same dress. You’d surely laugh, not sulk. Then you could both get on with the business of having fun.

Scary Situation: Three’s a crowd. Solution: Whenever a group goes trick-or- treating, it’s virtually unavoidable that one kid gets left behind as the others seem deaf to his cries of, “Hey guys, wait up!” I know it’s like a knife to your heart to watch this, but give the benefit of the doubt. What with everyone hyped up on Pixie Stix, it’s quite possible it wasn’t an intentional snub. Stefanie Mullin, a mom of three in Rockland, agrees. “When his two pals took off around the corner without telling Tony, I hoped it wasn’t that they were trying to ditch him. So I suggested going around the block the other way. We soon met up with them, and they hadn’t even realized Tony wasn’t with them, they were so excited.” If you’re the only parent in charge of the group, you don’t have much choice but to try to keep up with them—and call one of their parents if you can’t. But if not, taking your kid on an alternate route, trying to be as positive about the situation as you can, teaches a valuable lesson. You can’t control what other people do, only how you react.

Halloween Guide 2019 12 nymetroparents.com Halloween Guide 2019 12 nymetroparents.com Preparing Kids with Special Needs for Halloween Despite the BOO!-filled nature of All Hallows Eve, your child can partake in the holiday.

By Meredith Hirt

Preparation is key! Introduce your child to the holiday with fun songs, books, or movies that have a Halloween theme. And refrain from trying new strategies to help your child cope with the sensations of the holiday, cautions Jana Diamond, M.S. Ed., board-certified behavior analyst; your child can become overwhelmed with new stimuli and new approaches for coping, so use concepts that have worked for your child in the past.

Ready your child for... Spiderwebs, ghouls, and shrieking : As decorations begin popping up around town and in school, use social stories that illustrate what children might see, Diamond says.

Halloween Guide 2019 13 nymetroparentsnymetroparents.com.com Superman, monsters, witches, oh my: Visit stores that have costumes on display, browse catalogs filled with Halloween characters, and play dress- up at home to help make children comfortable with the notion of seeing people in costume, Diamond advises. Explain to your child that costumes are made up of clothing and props, nothing magical or scary. Masks: Masks can be especially scary, as they transform even close family members into unrecognizable beings. “Find masks that your child is comfortable with and have her look in the mirror as she puts it in front of her face and yours,” Diamond says. Participating in an art project that entails making a mask can also help put kids at ease.

Consider costumes carefully. Children with autism often have sensory processing difficulties with one or all of their senses—sight, sound, touch, taste, or smell—which can make wearing a costume difficult. If your child is interested in dressing up, have your child wear the costume around the house prior to the holiday to grow accustomed to it. Steer clear of complicated ensembles and stick with a simple T-shirt with a theme, or a Halloween hat or other accessory. “Especially for a child with sensory needs, Halloween can be an extremely overstimulating event—and it will not go well if their main focus is being uncomfortable,” Diamond says. Face paint can be a wonderful tactile sensation for sensory seekers, but skip it as well as eye masks, helmets, and similar accessories for sensory avoiders.

Halloween Guide 2019 14 nymetroparents.com Map out a trick-or-treating plan. Is your child daunted by the prospect of going door-to-door? Role-play with family members to simulate trick-or-treating, Diamond suggests. If your child has good verbal abilities, Diamond says to discuss the language he may encounter, and if your child responds better to visual cues, create a picture map displaying the route you’ll take. Create an itinerary beforehand. “Some children respond best to schedules, so parents can map out a schedule of where they will be trick-or- treating and when they will be home,” Diamond says. And keep it short if you’re not sure how your child will respond. Choose the houses you are going to visit and tell your neighbors how to approach your child. Make sure there are not any spooky decorations or blinking lights that could upset your child. Explicitly discuss the difference between Halloween and the rest of the year, making sure your child understands that at other times is he is not to knock on strangers’ doors.

Trade in sugary treats. Though it centers around candy, you don’t have to let dietary restrictions rule out trick-or-treating. Create a game whereby kids can trade in their Halloween stash for non-edible prizes such as Pokemon cards, Diamond suggests.

Take notes. Mental ones, at least: Notice what upsets your child, which times she enjoyed herself the most, and how much she itched and squirmed in her costume. The more details you commit to memory (or to a note in your iPhone), the better experience your child will have next Halloween.

Halloween Guide 2019 15 nymetroparentsnymetroparents.com.com Celebrate your own way. If kids don’t want to go trick-or-treating, there are other ways to celebrate Halloween that fall within their comfort zone. Children can pass out candy to trick-or- treaters, Diamond suggests. From this safe remove they are still participating in the holiday and practicing some social skills along the way. Host a Halloween party with family and friends at home; children can help make Halloween cookies or special orange foods; if age-appropriate, children can watch Halloween TV shows or movies.

“If you know your children—and how to tailor the experience to their needs—then they can definitely manage it,” Diamond suggests. But also consider this: “Halloween is a tradition, but is it a tradition that the parents feel is a priority for their family?” There’s nothing wrong with deciding not to take part in the holiday if it’s not a priority and it causes a lot of anxiety for your child. However, parents should still work on exposing children to Halloween sights and sounds so they’re not shocked when they go out in October. “Halloween presents the perfect opportunity to work on skills,” she says. “It’s a teaching opportunity.” It’s not all about candy, after all.

Halloween Guide 2019 16 16 nymetroparentsnymetroparents.com.com Trick-or-Treaters with Allergies Don’t leave out kids with food allergies this Halloween—here’s what you can do!

The Teal Pumpkin Project was launched in 2014 by FARE, Food Allergy Research & Education, to help spread awareness about food allergies in the community. To join the cause, simply place a teal painted pumpkin at your front door this Halloween to indicate allergy-free non-food treats are available at your house. According to foodallergy.org, 1 in 13 children in the United States are affected by food allergies, many of which can be life threatening. Unfortunately, many popular Halloween candies contain common allergens such as nuts, dairy, and wheat; additionally, many mini-versions of treats do not carry ingredient labels, making Halloween extra risky for kids with allergies. By offering non- food treats, kids can dress up in costume and participate in trick-or-treating without risking harm.

Halloween Guide 2019 17 nymetroparentsnymetroparents.com.com Keep kids safe by using separate bowls for food and non-food treats to avoid accidental contamination. By taking the Teal Pumpkin Project pledge, you can help keep the spooky holiday fun and safe for everyone. Spread the word by posting pictures of your teal pumpkin using #tealpumpkinproject, and register your address at foodallergy.org, so families affected by food allergies know where to go on Halloween!

Halloween Guide 2019 18 18 nymetroparentsnymetroparents.com.com Safety Tricks (and Treats) for Halloween By Jacqui Neber

Halloween is one of kids’ favorite nights of the year, but it can also present some scary situations. Walking in the dark, wearing costumes, and receiving candy from strangers can make kids vulnerable to danger. Fortunately, there are ways to prepare your kids so Halloween is safe and stress-free for everyone.

Travel in Numbers When it comes to Halloween safety, there’s no substitute for parental supervision, says Chris Hughes, the chief of police at Northport Police Department in Suffolk County. Kids younger than 12 should not go trick-or-treating without an adult, adds Debra Holtzman, J.D., M.A., author of The Safe Baby, and a national child safety expert. “Always look left, right, and left again when crossing, and keep looking as you cross. Hold the hands of young children and accompany them to the door of every home they visit,” she says.

Halloween Guide 2019 19 nymetroparents.comnymetroparents.com Stay Local When kids are ready to go out on their own, they should not trick or treat in any unfamiliar part of town, Hughes says. Knowing where they are, how to get home safely, and who to go to for help— such as a neighbor or other trusted adult in the neighborhood—is crucial. They should only go up to houses with lights on, keep their cellphones fully charged, and never go inside any home, Holtzman advises.

Be Careful About Candy Make sure your child knows to never eat anything that is unwrapped or appears to be homemade, Hughes says. You should “discard any candy that is a choking hazard, or that your child is allergic to, or that is not in its original wrapper, or looks as though it has been opened,” Holtzman adds.

Choose Costumes Wisely “Children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year,” Holtzman says. Crossing the street carefully can help prevent car accidents— but costumes matter too. Kids should wear reflective tape on their costumes, and costumes should allow for 100-percent visibility. “Should something happen, you want to be able to see it coming,” Hughes says. Consider face-paint instead of masks, Holtzman suggests, because it ensures kids can see and it won’t restrict breathing. Costumes should also be flame-resistant, and short enough that kids won’t trip or fall.

Don’t Be Spooked Halloween is and should remain a fun and festive holiday—as long as a few safety rules are in place. In general, Hughes says, kids should stay aware of their surroundings and avoid engaging with strangers. This will help everyone have more fun— even parents, who won’t have to worry while their kids trick or treat.

HalloweenHalloween GuideGuide 20192019 20 20 nymetroparents.comnymetroparents.com How to Carve a Jack-O’-Lantern Planning to carve a pumpkin for Halloween but not sure where to start? Follow these easy carving tips from Michael Natiello, creative director of The Great Jack O’ Lantern Blaze in Westchester.

Pick the Perfect Pumpkin There are two ways to approach it. You either have a design in mind and you know what you want to do, such as a Celtic knot, and then you find the pumpkin that suits the design, or the pumpkin sort of speaks to you and says ‘This is what I want to be.’ For example, if a pumpkin looks like Frankenstein, carve it into Frankenstein. Head to your nearest pumpkin patch. • When choosing your pumpkin, look for one that is without bruises, is evenly colored, and isn’t moldy or rotten. Check the bottom for rot and tap gently to hear a firm, hollow sound. • The lighter the pumpkin’s skin, the softer the pumpkin will be, thus the easier to carve. However, lighter-skinned may not last as long post carving.

Halloween Guide 2019 21 nymetroparentsnymetroparents.com.com • Choose a pumpkin with a smooth, flat face, with shallow ridges and few of them. Never carry your pumpkin by the stem. • If it’s heavy, that’s a good sign. If it’s light, it has probably been sitting around a while, so it will be shriveled up or dried out. It’s like picking an apple—you want the freshest fruit.

Prepare Your Pumpkin One you get your orange gourd home: • Wash and dry the pumpkin. • Cut a hole in the bottom. • Scoop out the guts. • Scrape the inside flesh clean and smooth until it’s approximately 1-inch thick. • Transfer your pattern onto the chosen side or draw your pattern directly onto the pumpkin. • Make cutouts. • Light the pumpkin and fine tune as necessary. • Once complete, wash under cold water. • Cut a vent or chimney in the back top of the pumpkin. • Light and enjoy!

The “Cut Out” Method This is the traditional method of carving a pumpkin, whereby shapes are cut from the flesh, allowing light to shine through. • Think about your cut before you make it. • Start in the middle and work your way out (this helps keep the pumpkin structurally sound). • Leave large areas to cut out for last (same reason as above), and cut them into smaller pieces for easier removal. • Keep all cut edges parallel. • Hold your cutting tool perpendicular to the surface. • Cut with gentle, steady, sawing motions. • Point the cutting tool toward the pumpkin’s center. • Resist the urge to poke the cut out into the pumpkin. Instead, push it out toward you from the inside.

Halloween Guide 2019 22 nymetroparentsnymetroparents.com.com • On corners or if changing directions, remove the carving tool then reinsert it in the new direction. • When complete, put a candle in the pumpkin, turn out the lights, and fine tune as needed.

Carving with Kids Carving with your children for the first time? • Keep it simple. There’s nothing wrong with the triangle for eyes and simple circle for nose and kind of jaggedy mouth, like what you would think of as a traditional jack-o’-lantern. Don’t overcomplicate it. There is something really elegant and beautiful about just a simply carved, glowing jack-o’-lantern. • Make sure that your tools are safe—and supervise your children at all times during the carving. Tools should be sturdy, clean, and sharp. It is actually more dangerous to work with a dull knife or a dull blade.

Preserving Your Jack-O’-Lantern How long your pumpkin lasts will depend on weather and the elements, but here are a few tips to lengthen your gourd’s lifespan as much as possible: • It is a fruit. It is perishable. So, make sure it’s in a cool environment. Some people put it in their fridge or a cool, dark place. You don’t want it baking in the blazing sun, because it will rot and turn to mush. • After carving, clean up the pumpkin with soapy water or disinfect it with a mild bleach solution—that inhibits any mold or bacteria from growing. • You also can coat any openings with petroleum jelly or commercially available pumpkin preservatives. • Keep the pumpkin wrapped in plastic in a cool location when not in use.

Halloween Guide 2019 23 nymetroparentsnymetroparents.com.com I ignored your advice about the petroleum jelly. Can I save my jack-o’-lantern? To rehydrate a shriveled pumpkin, soak in a tub of water overnight. To prevent mold growth, soak in a solution of water with 10 percent bleach. Dry before putting back on display.

I accidentally kicked my child’s jack-o’-lantern when entering the house; what can I do? To fix broken areas, or to repair areas accidentally cut off during the carving process, use toothpicks, pins, or staples to reaffix. If needed, patch a broken with a scrap of pumpkin flesh.

How do I prevent my pumpkins from becoming a snack for wildlife? To deter animals from eating pumpkins, spray the pumpkins with commercially available hinders, garlic spray, or hot pepper, or sprinkle the area with human hair.
