Country of > Colonial Days Famous Courtship Of Miles Standish Is Recalled By John Clagett Proctor. The distressing news that has reached this country recently of the capturing by the Nazi forces of that quiet and peaceful country known as The Netherlands, but generally re- ferred to as Holland, and the fleeing of the royal family to England, brings to the writer’s mind a visit he made to this kingdom of canals and dykes a few years ago, when every- thing there was peaceful and tran- quil, and no one could have pre- dicted this horrible, monstrous war in Europe. The writer’s visit to Holland was made with a touring party, and the first city visited after crossing the German border at Zevenach was The Hague (taken from the word hedge), where among the many in- teresting sights was the Temple of Peace for which Andrew Carnegie gave $1,500,000, though the Ameri- cans had to pay 20 cents in United States money just to enter the The University of Leyden, attended grounds. by John Quincy Adams.
