    Meet the bishop behind the updated Catholic Catechism www.americamagazine.org Archbishop Rino Fisichella, baptized Salvatore, is an Italian prelate who has served as the first president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting the New Evangelization since 2010 and president of the International Council for Catechesis since 2013. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him to the former post as part of the process leading into the Synod for the New Evangelization and the post-synodal exhortation Evangelii Gaudium of Pope Francis. Previously, he taught fundamental theology for 20 years at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He also served as an Auxiliary Bishop of Rome, Rector of the Pontifical Lateran University and in various curial positions. A specialist in the theology of Hans Urs von Balthasar, Archbishop Fisichella recently completed a revision of his 1993 Theological Commentary on the Catechism of the Catholic Church that Our Sunday Visitor is publishing in the United States this summer as part of an updated version of the Catechism itself. As editor of this commentary, he oversaw the contributions of 42 experts chosen from among bishops, theologians, pastors, catechists and other scholars. On April 12, I interviewed Archbishop Fisichella by email about this project. The following text of our conversation has been edited for style and length. Since Pope St. John Paul II first promulgated the Catechism of the Catholic Church in 1992, the Vatican has given us the Compendium to the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Youth Catechism (YOUCAT) as follow-ups. As per the Catechism’s directive, we also have a United States Catholic Catechism for Adults and other catechisms now synched to it.

    Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith Clarification on procured abortion Recently a number of letters have been sent to the Holy See, some of them from prominent figures in political and ecclesial life, explaining the confusion that has been created in various countries, especially in Latin America, following the manipulation and exploitation of an article by His Excellency Archbishop Rino Fisichella, President of the Pontifical Academy for Life, on the sad affair of the “Brazilian girl.” In this article, which appeared in “L’Osservatore Romano” on March 15, 2009, the doctrine of the Church was presented, while still keeping in mind the dramatic situation of the aforementioned girl, who - as could be demonstrated afterward - had been accompanied with all pastoral delicacy, in particular by the Archbishop of Olinda and Recife at the time, His Excellency Archbishop José Cardoso Sobrinho. In this regard, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith reiterates that the Church’s teaching on procured abortion has not changed, nor can it change. This teaching has been presented in numbers 2270-2273 in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, in these terms: «Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. Rino Fisichella Pope Benedict XVI, in his homily at the inaugural Mass of the recent Synod of Bishops, affirmed that the New Evangelization become part of the ordinary pastoral activity of the Church with the aim of awakening in every baptized person the awareness of being a bearer of the Gospel. For this to occur, there needs to be a serious and systematic Christian formation which unifies faith and everyday life. It is only in this unity that it is possible to state the reasons for faith and its contents. At the conclusion of the Synod, with characteristic foresight, Benedict XVI announced the transfer of competency over Catechesis from the Congregation for Clergy to the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization. The Motu Proprio “Fides per doctrinam”, published today, clarifies the thinking behind this move. What is clear is that this transfer is no mere formality, but must be understood in the context of the concrete pastoral action which Pope Benedict is setting out for the Church in the years and decades to come. Creating a more organic relationship between Catechesis and the New Evangelization serves above all to consolidate the innovative path of the different stages of the evangelizing mission of the Church set out by the Second Vatican Council. At the same time, it offers the project of the New Evangelization a highly qualified instrument with which to pursue its direction. Along with the profession of faith, the liturgy, and personal witness to Christ, Catechesis emerges as a necessary factor in sustaining faith and ensuring it has sufficient cultural depth.

    Clemente Emilio Riva (1922 – 1999) by Domenico Mariani1 (Translated by J.Anthony Dewhirst) Clemente Emilio Riva was born at dawn on the 5 June 1922 at Medolago (BG) — a village 4 kilometres from Sotto il Monte and 18 kilometres from Bergamo. His parents were Giuseppe and Angela Ferrari. He was the second born in a family of nine children. (His two sisters, Rina and Adelina, are still living). He was baptised the same evening in the parochial church of S. Maria Assunta by the parish priest Don Santo Bonomi, and he would be confirmed in this church, at the age of 14, by Bishop Adriano Bernareggi on 27 May 1936. The family was a poor one and lived by the work of their father, Giuseppe, who was a farmer and share-cropper, (he died at the age of 72 on 21 June 1960), and through the good domestic administration of their mother, (who died at the age of 64 on 5 March, 1961). Clemente would always vividly remember his parents with gratitude, admiration and affection. Young Riva went to the country elementary school and occasionally helped on the farm, but he soon showed a desire to become a priest. This vocation would become clearer when he heard that his cousin had entered the seminary. He was now twelve years old. So in June 1935, after a brief preparation with the curate Don Luigi Rizzoli, he presented himself at the diocesan seminary in order to take the entrance exam to the primary grammar school, which he failed. This is the reason, as well as financial difficulty, why the Riva family turned to the Rosminians who had a small seminary at Pusiano.
