UP NEXT Following this weekend’s Pac-12 Championships, the Sun Devils will prepare for the biggest week of the season as they get set for the NCAA Championships on Mar. 19-21 in Minneapolis, Minnesota at US Bank Stadium – home of the Minnesota Vikings.

PAC-12 ALLOCATIONS Out of all Division I conferences, the Pac-12 has the second-fewest allocations (16) for the upcoming NCAA Championships in Minneapolis, making it one of the toughest roads to getting to the biggest stage in college wrestling. The Big Ten (79) holds the most out of any conference, followed by Big 12 (54), Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (44), Mid-American (41), ACC (35), Pac-12 (16) and Southern (14). In total, 330 wrestlers will make the trip to the NCAA’s with the final 40 spots being determined by the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee as at-large bids. Here is a look at allocations per weight class for the Pac- 12: 125 – 2, 133 – 1, 141 – 2, 149 – 1, 157 – 2, 165 – 2, 174 – 1, 184 – 1, 197 – 3, 285 – 1

SUN DEVILS IN THE RPI The NCAA recently released a new Rating Percentage Index (RPI) through Feb. 23 with seven Sun Devils find their name near the top of the list with the best college wrestlers in the country – Brandon Courtney (No. 9), Josh Maruca (No. 29), Jacori Teemer (No. 13), Josh Shields (No. 6), Anthony Valencia (No. 13), Kordell Norfleet (No. 12) and Tanner Hall (No. 3).

PAC-12 INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS In the final Pac-12 conference rankings, five Sun Devils hold the top spot at their respective weight classes – Brandon Courtney (125), Jacori Teemer (157), An- thony Valencia (174), Kordell Norfleet (197) and Tanner Hall (HWT). Josh Shields (165) comes in ranked second, Josh Kramer (133) fourth, Josh Maruca (149) fifth and Cory Crooks (141) sixth.

BACK HALF STEPS UP TO DEFEAT #8 UNC In the final match of the regular season, the Sun Devils bounced back from a loss to Lehigh two days earlier by handing No. 8 UNC their third loss of the season in Chapel Hill by a score of 22-9. The momentum shifted in a matchup at 157 lbs., with Jacori Teemer stepping up to knockoff another top-20 opponent and swing things back in the Devils direction, which ultimately jumpstarted ASU to win the final six matches. The win solidified ASU’s seventh top-25 victory and marked the program’s first 15 win season since 1989-90.

TEEMER NOTCHES SECOND PAC-12 WoW For the second time this season, redshirt freshman Jacori Teemer was named Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week for his breakout weekend against No. 11 Lehigh and No. 8 North Carolina. On Feb. 21, Teemer dropped No. 8 ranked Josh Humphreys of Lehigh with a late go-ahead reversal in the final 10 seconds of action to secure the freshman’s first top-10 win of his career. Two days later a similar result followed as Teemer picked up another reversal in the overtime period to defeat No. 16 Austin Headlee, 3-2. The second Pac-12 weekly honor makes Teemer the first Sun Devil wrestler in program history to be awarded the conference honor twice in one season.

NOTEWORTHY • With 3 individual champions in 2019, ASU has now recorded three or more individual Pac-12 titles in four straight years (2016-19), making it the first time that’s happened since 1995-1998 • ASU has the second most all-time team championships (18) and top-three finishes (34) by any member institution at the Pac-12 Championships • With a 15-2 dual record this season, the Sun Devils reached their first 15 win season in 31 years (1988-89). ASU also finished a perfect 5-0 in conference action for the first time since 2017-18. • Jacori Teemer was named Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week twice over the course of his first season as a Sun Devil, making him the first wrestler in program history to be awarded the honor two times in one season. • Five Sun Devils are ranked in the top-10 of their respective weight classes in the most recent Division I Coaches rank (Feb. 23) – Brandon Courtney (No. 8), Josh Shields (No. 6), Anthony Valencia (No. 9), Kordell Norfleet (No. 9) and Tanner Hall (No. 6). ASU is one of just four programs in all of Division I college wrestling with five or more top-10 ranked wrestlers. • The Sun Devils handed No. 1 ranked Penn State their first loss since 2015 and ended the Nittany Lions 60 match win-streak back on Nov. 22. ASU snapped the longest win-streak in college wrestling since Iowa won 69 straight from 2008-2011. • ASU took third place for the second time in three years at the Cliff Keen Invitational back in December, the program’s highest joint finish at CKLV in over 19 years. • Five Sun Devil wrestlers are members of Barrett’s Honors College at Arizona State, including two in the lineup – Tanner Hall and Cade Belshay who are joined by teammates Aaron Valenzuela, Ethan Pickren, and Zane Coleman. The seventh coach in ASU wrestling history, Zeke Jones was hired in April 2014 and had his contract renewed in October 2016.

Jones led his alma mater to its 18th Pac-10/12 championship (10th conference title including two Western Athletic Conference titles) and second consecutive conference championship in 2018 behind six individual champions in Ali Naser (133), Jason Tsirtsis (149), Josh Shields (157), Anthony Valencia (165), Zahid Valencia (174), and Kordell Norfleet (184). These six as well as Ryan Millhof and Tanner Hall represented ASU at NCAA’s where they earned their highest finish since 2011 (10th).

An Olympic silver medalist for the United States, Jones was the 1991 World Champion at 52kg, a four-time World Cup Champion, and coached the United States’ Olympians in the 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2012 Olympic Games.

A member of ASU’s 1988 NCAA Wrestling Championship team, Jones was a three- time All-American and Pac-10 Champion for the Sun Devils. A national runner-up at 118, Jones sits at No. 4 in ASU’s career record book in both overall victories (134) and dual victories (59). He also holds the school record for dual match victories in a season with 22 during the 1989-90 campaign.

As Olympic head coach, Jones’ athletes earned two gold medal and one bronze at the London games in 2012. His athletes in the 2004 Athens games, where he was the freestyle coach, earned a gold and two silvers.

In the four World Championships during Jones’ tenure, the USA placed third in 2011, fifth in 2013, and seventh in 2009. He also led the USA to five individual World Champion medals, including two-time world champion Jordan Burroughs.

The United States also competed in three Freestyle World Cups during the Jones era, placing third in 2012 and 2013, and sixth in 2010. During the Jones era, the USA won eight Junior World medals, five University World medals, and four Cadet World medals.

Jones came to USA Wrestling after coaching at the University of Pennsylvania from 2005-07, where he amassed a record of 33-17-1. Following the 2006 campaign that saw an NCAA champion, two All-Americans, two Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) champions, and a third- place finish at the EIWA Championships, Amateur Wrestling News named Jones the Rookie Head Coach of the Year.

Prior to coaching at Penn, he served on the coaching staffs at West Virginia, ASU, and Bloomsburg University. Jones coached teams that have finished in the NCAA Final Four twice, in the top-10 four times, and won six conference team championships. Individually, his wrestlers have won six NCAA titles, eight NCAA finalists, 36 individual conference champions, 29 All-Americans, 74 NCAA Qualifiers, and 11 wrestlers have competed in the NWCA All-Star Meet.

Originally from Ann Arbor, Mich., Jones is a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, member of the Arizona State University Hall of Fame, and the Michigan Wrestling Hall of Fame.

ASU President Michael Crow on Zeke Jones: “I said to Ray [Anderson], either we’re going to have a wrestling team that’s going to compete for national championships or we’re not going to have a wrestling team. So you need to find the best person in the world to be our coach. Zeke Jones is our coach: Multi-time world champion in wrestling, NCAA champion, ASU graduate, and at the time Ray hired him, sitting Olympic coach for the United States Olympic Team in wrestling, former coach at the University of Pennsylvania. That is the person, the personage, the kind of character that we are looking for.”

ASU Vice President for University Athletics/Athletics Director Ray Anderson on Zeke Jones: “It is important we retain our high-caliber coaching hires and, without a doubt, Coach Jones has made a huge impact in his three years at Arizona State. He consistently demands high academ- ic commitment and athletic dedication from our student-athletes and he and his staff worked tirelessly to recruit one of the top-rated recruiting classes in college wrestling history.”

TEEMER NOTCHES FIRST PIN IN WIN OVER THE BEAVERS Redshirt freshman Jacori Teemer (157) made his second start at Desert Financial Arena a memorable one, picking up his first career pin as a Sun Devil, while also recording ASU’s fastest pin (0:42) of the season to help push the Sun Devils to a 26-12 victory over Oregon State on Jan. 17. It was the team’s fourth come from behind victory of the season led by the back half of lineup, as three straight bonus-point wins by Teemer, Josh Shields (pin), and Anthony Valencia (tech fall) proved to be the difference maker in solidifying the Devils first 9-1 start since 1990.

ZAHID VALENCIA EARNS THIRD PAC-12 WoW HONOR Valencia helped lead the Sun Devils past Harvard, Campbell and No. 11 Iowa State on Jan. 11 at Chase Field, with four bonus-point wins, including one major decision over Gavin Hoffman (Ohio State), one pin against Michael Doggett (Harvard) and two more majors over No. 15 ranked Andrew Morgan (Campbell) and No. 14 Marcus Coleman (Iowa State). His four bonus wins was good enough to surpass 2011 National Champion Anthony Robles for the most career bo- nus-point victories (93) in program history. The Pac-12 honor was Valencia’s third time receiving the accolade as he also named in his freshman and sophomore seasons.

SUN DEVILS SWEEP DUALS ON THE DIAMOND The Sun Devils went 3-0 on the day, defeating Harvard, Campbell and No. 11 Iowa State in a historic outing as they hosted the first-ever college wrestling event at a major league baseball stadium (Chase Field). Dillon Ulrey (149), Anthony Valencia (174), Zahid Valencia (184) and Kordell Norfleet (197) all picked up six points in the match to put the team up comfortably and notch the first time in seven years that ASU had four wrestlers with a pin in a single match.
