Six of the last seven meetings between the teams in the Pac-12 Championship, 3-2, CONTENDER’S BRACKET QUARTERFINAL with the Trojans taking a 4-3 lead in the championship series. #3 California def. #6 Arizona State, 3-1 UCLA took a 2-0 lead after claiming points at the No. 4 and No. 5 courts. The Bruins’ No. 4 pair of Lea Monkhouse and Savvy Simo battled to the wire in both sets CONTENDER’S BRACKET SEMIFINAL against USC’s Joy Dennis and Maja Kaiser, 23-21, 26-24. The Trojans responded #1 UCLA def. #3 California, 3-0 with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to even the dual score as the No. 2 pairs of Lily Justine and Sarah Sponcil of UCLA and Terese Cannon and Sammy Slater of USC were CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH headed into the third set tied at 1-1. UCLA went up 10-7 in that final frame, but USC #2 USC def. #1 UCLA, 3-2 responded with an 8-2 run to win the set, match, dual and title, 15-12. The day opened with the Bruins taking a decisive 3-0 decision over California ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM in the contender’s bracket final to get into the championship final. With the matches Grace Campbell/Iya Lindahl, CAL being played to decision all week, Carey/Sparks at No. 4 and Monkhouse/Simo at No. Samantha Plaster/Kate Baldwin, ASU 5 gave the Bruins a 2-0 lead. UCLA’s top pair of Megan and Nicole McNamara closed Izzy Carey/Lindsey Sparks, UCLA out with a commanding 21-9, 21-13 win to post the team’s third point and win.
