Eiff Are Very ‘Happy’ to Close the 2013 Festival with World Premiere Of EIFF ARE VERY ‘HAPPY’ TO CLOSE THE 2013 FESTIVAL WITH WORLD PREMIERE OF ‘NOT ANOTHER HAPPY ENDING’ PLUS EIFF ANNOUNCE A RETROSPECTIVE OF HOLLYWOOD DIRECTOR RICHARD FLEISCHER Edinburgh – 16th April 2013 – Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF) is proud to announce NOT ANOTHER HAPPY ENDING starring Karen Gillan and Stanley Weber (alongside Amy Manson, Iain de Caestecker, Kate Dickie, Freya Mavor, Gary Lewis and Henry Ian Cusick), as the Closing Night film of the 67th edition of the Festival. The red carpet will be rolled out at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre on 30th June when the stars and filmmakers attend the World Premiere of this indie romantic comedy set in Glasgow. Chris Fujiwara, EIFF Artistic Director, said: “Speaking as somebody who, before coming to Scotland, knew Scotland partly through its portrayal in films, I'm really excited to find in NOT ANOTHER HAPPY ENDING a fresh, interesting, and almost idyllic take on the cultural vibrancy of Scottish city life. The film also shows how well the time-honoured genre of romantic comedy can work in the contemporary Scottish context. The film will add just the right note of celebration with which to close our festival this year.” NOT ANOTHER HAPPY ENDING is directed by John McKay (Crush, We’ll Take Manhattan), is produced by Claire Mundell (Crying With Laughter, Weekend) of Synchronicity Films, co-produced by Wendy Griffin (Wasted) and written by David Solomons (The Great Ghost Rescue, Five Children and It). When struggling, maverick publisher Tomas Duval discovers his only successful author Jane Lockhart is blocked he knows he has to unblock her or he’s finished - with her newfound success, she’s become too damn happy and she can’t write when she’s happy. Festival-goers will be able to enjoy stars of the silver screen such as Charlton Heston in futuristic SOYLENT GREEN (1973), Richard Attenborough and John Hurt in 10 RILLINGTON PLACE (1971), Tony Curtis and Henry Fonda in THE BOSTON STRANGLER (1968), Stephen Boyd and Rachel Welch in FANTASTIC VOYAGE (1966), Joan Collins as THE GIRL IN THE RED VELVET SWING (1955) and edgy film noir with THE NARROW MARGIN (1952). Over a career that spanned six decades and ranged from film noir to science fiction, American director Richard Fleischer (1916-2006) was responsible for some of the most distinctive and most enduring Hollywood classics. His versatility, while enabling him to achieve commercial longevity, may also be a reason why Fleischer has been consistently underrated by critics and historians. Yet his films are in the best tradition of mainstream cinema with their deft interweaving of thrilling action and psychological complexity. This retrospective reveals the full range of Fleischer’s work. Antony Robert Earnshaw Sheffield Hallam University MA English by Research September 2017 1 Abstract This thesis assesses changing British attitudes to the dramatisation of crimes committed by domestic serial killers and highlights the dearth of films made in this country on this subject. It discusses the notion of taboos and, using empirical and historical research, illustrates how filmmakers’ attempts to initiate productions have been vetoed by social, cultural and political sensitivities. Comparisons are drawn between the prevalence of such product in the United States and its uncommonness in Britain, emphasising the issues around the importing of similar foreign material for exhibition on British cinema screens and the importance of geographic distance to notions of appropriateness. The influence of the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is evaluated. This includes a focus on how a central BBFC policy – the so- called 30-year rule of refusing to classify dramatisations of ‘recent’ cases of factual crime – was scrapped and replaced with a case-by-case consideration that allowed for the accommodation of a specific film championing a message of tolerance.

A ski-jump hairdo, a zillion impersonations, making his bum "talk" - Ace Ventura showcases Jim Carrey's near-rapturous gifts for physical comedy long before he became encumbered by notions of serious acting. An Actor's Revenge (Kon Ichikawa, 1963) Prolific Japanese director Ichikawa scored a bulls-eye with this beautifully stylized potboiler that took its cues from traditional Kabuki theatre. It's all ballasted by a terrific double performance from Kazuo Hasegawa both as the female-impersonator who has sworn vengeance for the death of his parents, and the raucous thief who helps him. The Addiction (Abel Ferrara, 1995) Ferrara's comic-horror vision of modern urban vampires is an underrated masterpiece, full- throatedly bizarre and offensive. The vampire takes blood from the innocent mortal and creates another vampire, condemned to an eternity of addiction and despair. Ferrara's mob movie The Funeral, released at the same time, had a similar vision of violence and humiliation.

We of the dinosaur generation— meaning we received our education via blackboards and Coronet films—were to encounter a learning environment at Valparaiso University that promotes new insights for engineering and sci- ence students. It’s called the Vis Lab, short for Scientific Visualization Laboratory, and it is open to the public twice a week for tours and demonstrations. You might at first think when entering the little room in Gellerson Hall that you’ve walked into a state-of-the-art theatre. The “star” of the Vis Lab is the Vis Box, which pro- jects high resolution 3-D images upon a screen. But instead of theatre seating, the student (or visitor) stands on a plat- form directly in front of the screen, and, With a pair of polarized goggles, a student or visitor can visually explore the structure of microbes. donning a pair of polarized goggles, enters the world of Virtual Reality.
