Uncovering the Anti-Queer Sentiment in the Dianetic Perspective At present, there is a groundswell of public sensational interest in the subject of Scientology; and, in fact, in the time since I began this research paper, a nine-episode documentary series has premiered and reached finale on A&E titled “Scientology and the Aftermath”— a personal project hosted by sitcom celebrity, ex-Scientologist, and author of Troublemaker: Surviving Hollywood and Scientology, Leah Remini.1 I could not begin to enumerate the myriad exposés/memoirs of ex-Scientologists that have been published in recent years nor could I emphasize enough the rampant conspiracy theories that are at the disposal of any curious mind on what many have termed “the cult” of Scientology.

I concluded finally that he needed a hand,” stated Scientology founding father L. Ron Hubbard. That helping hand became a clenching fist around the throat of many a devout member, which director Alex Gibney reveals in his investigation behind the curtain of Scientology. Having read “Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief” by Lawrence Wright, Gibney signed up to create a film for HBO on the mysterious religion, addressing the numerous allegations of human rights abuses for which it was under attack. With Gibney’s track record of probing power abuse in its many forms, the disputable practices of Hubbard and his enigmatic successor David Miscavige made for prime material. A number of credible ex-members are interviewed, including filmmaker Paul Haggis and John Travolta’s former representative Spanky Taylor, and their journeys up “The Bridge” of Scientology and subsequent rejection of the organization that had promised them spiritual freedom - along with with a hefty financial and personal price tag- serve as the film’s focal point.

TRANSLATION ENG>ITA SCIENTOLOGY DEFECTORS: A TIMELINE FROM ALLEGATIONS OF ABUSE TO LACK OF SUPPORT FOR LGBT RIGHTS, A LOOK INTO WHY 10 FORMER SCIENTOLOGISTS DECIDED TO LEAVE THE CHURCH The Church of Scientology might be one of the most secretive organizations in the country, but there's one thing it can't seem to keep quiet: defections. Since its creation in 1953, a string of celebrities and higher-ups have left the church. For years, those who defected largely kept quiet about what they'd seen on the inside – but increasingly, that's changed. In 2009, a St. Petersburg Times series revealed a host of former high-level executives who shared their stories. Then, in 2015, an HBO documentary called Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief – based on a 2013 book by journalist and screenwriter Lawrence Wright – told the stories of many of these defectors. Just months after that film was released, sitcom star and former Scientologist Leah Remini wrote a book about her 30 years in the church, and this year, followed it up with her A&E show Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath, in which she tells her story and interviews fellow defectors. Now, it seems, Scientology's greatest blessings – its celebrity followers and devoted lifers – have become their biggest liability. But how far back do the defections go? Here, 10 people whose lives revolved around Scientology –then made the conscious decision to leave. TRANSLATION ITA>ENG CHE COS’È LA CHIESA DI SCIENTOLOGY INTERNAZIONALE? • SCIENTOLOGY: from Science Fiction to Space-Age Religion
STATEMENT DS-170 SCIENTOLOGY: From Science Fiction to Space-Age Religion by John Weldon Summary The Church of Scientology is a controversial new religion developed by L. Ron Hubbard as an extension of his earlier psychological theories of Dianetics. Drawing on ideas from Buddhist and Hindu religious philosophy, science fiction, and Western concepts in psychology and science, L. Ron Hubbard produced a religion that sees all human beings as immortal spirits (thetans) who have forgotten their identity and become deceived by the very universe they mentally emanated in order to amuse themselves. Scientology claims it can free the thetan to realize his or her true nature and powers through certain controversial procedures that allegedly heal the mind and free the spirit. Although the church claims its beliefs are not incompatible with Christian faith, an evaluation of what Scientology teaches in the areas of God, man, the creation, salvation, and death proves this is not so. Scientology is a powerful new religion whose teachings are inconsistent with the beliefs of orthodox Christian faith. Ours is an age of religious cacophony, as was the Roman Empire of Christ's time. From agnosticism to Hegelianism, from devil-worship to scientific rationalism, from theosophical cults to philosophies of process: virtually any world view conceivable is offered to modern man in the pluralistic marketplace of ideas. Our age is indeed in ideological and societal agony, grasping at anything and everything that can conceivably offer the ecstasy of a cosmic relationship or of a comprehensive Weltanschauung [world view]. — John Warwick Montgomery.1 One of the most intriguing and controversial items found in today's religious marketplace is The Church of Scientology.
