A pleasant second outing with the Vinyl DetectiveBy NeurasthenicI found Carmel's previous book, "Written in Dead Wax" to be surprising fun so I gave this sequel a shot. The best parts are very similar to the earlier book -- the main character is a 'record detective' who is asked to take on an assignment with broader implications for the legacy and estate of a dead performer and finds himself, and his gang of friends, in the literal crosshairs of evildoers who prefer to let things lie.The mystery in this case involves the disappearance of the infant child of a fictional 1960s British singer called "Valerian." She died and her baby disappeared, and decades later the Vinyl Detective is on the case. In the world of the novel, most people assume the the baby was kidnapped and probably killed. However, as somebody who has read a book before, I know he's got to be still alive and will emerge over the course of the book. And, as there is only one character in the book of the right age to be this missing child, I solved the 'mystery' about 350 pages before the Vinyl Detective did. This is a work of genre fiction, so it's got to follow norms and shouldn't be dinged merely for being predictable. How the author gets to the conclusion matters more than the conclusion itself. And in that regard, the book is better. The tone is breezy and it's often amusing. Cartmel went to excessive lengths, I think, to include the core cast from the first book. Some of these conncections ("Stinky" being held at the addiction recovery center next door to the main characters' house) felt forced. And some of the foreshadowing was very heavy-handed. When a character volunteers early in the text that she had been good at archery in school, we know that she must later save the day by shooting an arrow. And of course she does.On balance fun, but not a great book.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. 2nd in the cozy mystery series - worth buyingBy JTHeymanI think this, the second Vinyl Detective novel, is even better than the first. The plot is more unified but it retains all of the cozy-mystery charm of the original. It's about a man whose livelihood is finding and selling rare vinyl records who (along with his circle of equally unique friends) gets mixed up in secrets people are willing to kill for. It moves just a little slowly in parts so I couldn't give it 5 stars, but it's a wonderful little cozy mystery which does what cozy mysteries are supposed to do: introduce you to fun characters and see them solve a mystery. While reading the first book "The Vinyl Detective: Written in Dead Wax" would help, it's not required to enjoy this one (although reading this book first will give away parts of the first one). I recommend it.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Love this seriesBy CustomerA great addition to this wonderful series. I didn't want this book to end because I will now have to wait for the next book. His first adventure consisted of the search for a rare record; his second the search for a lost child. Specifically the child of Valerian, lead singer of a great rock band of the 1960s, who hanged herself in mysterious circumstances after the boyrsquo;s abduction.Along the way, the Vinyl Detective finds himself marked for death, at the wrong end of a shotgun, and unknowingly dosed with LSD as a prelude to being burned alive. And then therersquo;s the grave robbinghellip; "Vinyl Detective is proving to be a very amenable companion to have on a treasure hunt. This is one vinyl nerd you won't mind spending time with " - Kirkus s"Great premise, great fun. Keep rsquo;em coming." Booklist"Cartmel treats music and records seriously, plays his strange characters for laughs, and provides a bit of danger and some unexpected twists in this affectionate nod to the vagaries of rock stardom." - Publishers Weekly"There is just something so appealing, quirky and well, relatable about the cast of characters" - MyBigHonkinBlogldquo;a great piece of detective fiction with characters that feel authentic. I'm glad the story has finally been completed properlyBy S. NelsonI'm glad the story has finally been completed properly. It was finished as a magazine, several years ago, but it wasn't quite what they'd wanted. This time the story is compete, with new artwork to fill it out.My only disappointment is the cover. If been hoping for the red cover art that's shown above- it matches the original magazine release. This is the third time the publishers have released one of these collections with different cover art than was advertised.Otherwise, it's what I expected.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Of course, this was my own particular choice and therefore very subjective. What’s one man’s junk etc. Unsurprisingly, Doctor Who was one of those shows, even though at that time it was taking a rather longer than expected sabbatical. Over the last twenty years there’s been no shortage of writers wanting to share their love of the world’s longest running science fiction series and on the following pages are a selection of some of them. It’s amazing to think that nearly sixty years has passed since we first entered that police box in a junk yard in Totters Lane and were whisked away on one of television’s greatest adventures. Adventures that are still unfolding today. If you want to read more then pop along to the website at televisionheaven.co.uk where, as well as Doctor Who you will find reviews on over a thousand shows, articles (some serious, some light hearted), biographies and a fair bit of television history.
