Playing with Safety: Dangerous Toys and the Role of America’s Civil Justice System December 2010 Playing with Safety: Dangerous Toys and the Role of America’s Civil Justice System 1 Table of Contents Introduction 3 Danger in Familiar Places 4 Lead 6 Toxic Substances 8 Magnets 10 Conclusion 13 Appendix: Resources for Consumers 14 Endnotes 15 Playing with Safety: Dangerous Toys and the Role of America’s Civil Justice System 2 Introduction Today’s toys are not your parents’ toys. Toys have grown in sophistication and technological advancement, but so have their dangers. In 1970, the most popular toy on the market was the then brand new Nerf Ball. Forty years later, the Nerf is still popular but has morphed into a “Blaster” – armed with a fl ip-up sight, red dot light beam, and shoulder stock with an extra ammo clip – and had to be recalled after the gun’s mechanism injured more than 45 children.1 While most parents have always had the common sense to watch for small objects that might choke a child or sharp pieces that might cause harm, today’s toys feature unseen hazards. Now, the danger comes from lead, cadmium, asbestos, and other carcinogens undetectable to the eye, or small, innocent-looking magnets that can rip a child apart from the inside. Since 1974, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued more than 850 recalls for toy products. In 2007, 45 million toys had to be recalled.2 Between 2004 and 2008, toy-related injuries increased 12 percent, and over the last 10 years, toy-related injuries have increased 54 percent.3 This increase in the number of injuries to children every year has coincided with a marked increase in imported toys.

  • Elizabeth Vargas
ELIZABETH VARGAS As an award-winning anchor and correspondent, Vargas has traveled the world covering breaking news stories, reporting in-depth investigations and conducting newsmaker interviews. She is the anchor of ABC’s television newsmagazine 20/20 and ABC News specials and she can also be seen on Good Morning America. She previously was an anchor for World News Tonight. During the historic Iraqi elections in December 2005, she anchored World News Tonight from Baghdad. She anchored for both World News Tonight and 20/20 from the U.S. Gulf Coast, covering Hurricane Katrina’s devastation. Vargas has also anchored ABC News coverage of live, breaking news stories including the deaths of President Ronald Reagan and John F. Kennedy, Jr. She won an Emmy in 2000 for Outstanding Instant Coverage of a News Story for anchoring live coverage of the Elian Gonzalez case. Vargas was credited by The New York Times in November 2004 as reinvigorating the newsmagazine format with her “intellectually brave” reporting of an examination of the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, a young man whose murder gained national attention as an anti-gay crime. In July 2003, she hosted “In the Shadow of Laci Peterson”, an ABC News special that examined the disappearances of several young women in northern California and why their stories failed to attract significant media attention. In November 2003, she anchored “Jesus, Mary and Da Vinci”, an hour investigating many theories raised in the best-selling novel The Da Vinci Code. In 2002, Vargas was the narrator of the four-part, award-winning ABC News documentary series “ICU”, which provided a unique look at life inside one of the nation’s elite pediatric cardiology intensive care units.

1St. Rose of Lima Church 312 Ridgedale Avenue East Hanover, New Jersey 07936 www.saintroseoflimachurch.org Third Sunday of Lent March 4, 2018 I’m thrilled to announce that we have twelve people preparing for the Sacraments of Initiation between Easter and Pentecost. Congratulations to: Robin who seeks the Sacraments of Baptism, Holy Eucharist and Confirmation. I presented her to the Bishop on Sunday, February 18th. Karen and Brian who seek to enter the Catholic Church through Profession of Faith, Holy Eucharist and Confirmation. Steven and Alyssa who will receive Holy Eucharist and Confirmation. Nick, Matt, Imma, Jenna, Nicholas, Lindsay, and Tianna who will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. Please keep the RCIA candidates in your prayers during these final days of preparation. Our 9th graders had a day of retreat last Saturday. They began at 9:00am and finished at 1:00pm when I celebrated a Teaching Mass for them. A big thank you to Lisa Paradiso, our Youth Minister, for organizing and running this day of reflection. Thanks also to Louis of Brick restaurant in Denville for providing and donating the food. We appreciate our catechists and volunteers and Antioch Team who gave of their time, generosity and joy. I look forward to the Knights of Columbus St. Patrick’s Dinner Dance next Saturday, March 10th. For information on this dance please see inside the bulletin. Several Sources operates a special family program to provide food, clothing, school supplies and emergency financial assistance to impoverished families. Many of these families began at one of the Several Sources maternity homes and often times the mom finds it impossible to make ends meet.
