CLIFF KIRKPATRICK 406mtsports.com Football teams have watched video ever since tape spooled on two heads. Coaches adapted from the VCR to DVD over the years as technology changed. Now, veteran coaches such as Mike Van Diest use the Internet to nearly instantaneously scout opponents and prepare players for the coming opponent. However, they still call it watch- ing film out of habit. “Film study is great,” Van Diest said. “It’s part of the profession I enjoy, watching film. I love watch- ing film and the strategy of it.” Frontier Conference teams take the video shot of each game on Saturdays and download it to Hudl, a video sharing service, by Sunday so every team can gain ac- cess all season. From there, each team can study opponents and themselves. In the past, the video personnel traded tapes of common opponents out of courtesy. Sometimes rivals re- fused to share. “We don’t have to send things on buses, drive DVDs anymore or 16 mm film, like we did not that long ago,” Van Diest said. “It’s nice to have everything on Hudl and it’s right there.” The Saints not only study op- ponent video, they study their BMGPHOTOS.COM own games and practices.
