    chamber music with a modernist edge. His Piano Sonata (1938) reflected his Leonard Bernstein ties to Copland, with links also to the music of Hindemith and Stravinsky, and his Sonata for Clarinet and Piano (1942) was similarly grounded in a neoclassical aesthetic. The composer Paul Bowles praised the clarinet sonata as having a "tender, sharp, singing quality," as being "alive, tough, integrated." It was a prescient assessment, which ultimately applied to Bernstein’s music in all genres. Bernstein’s professional breakthrough came with exceptional force and visibility, establishing him as a stunning new talent. In 1943, at age twenty-five, he made his debut with the New York Philharmonic, replacing Bruno Walter at the last minute and inspiring a front-page story in the New York Times. In rapid succession, Bernstein Leonard Bernstein photo © Susech Batah, Berlin (DG) produced a major series of compositions, some drawing on his own Jewish heritage, as in his Symphony No. 1, "Jeremiah," which had its first Leonard Bernstein—celebrated as one of the most influential musicians of the performance with the composer conducting the Pittsburgh Symphony in 20th century—ushered in an era of major cultural and technological transition. January 1944. "Lamentation," its final movement, features a mezzo-soprano He led the way in advocating an open attitude about what constituted "good" delivering Hebrew texts from the Book of Lamentations. Miss Lawrence, a native of the Mid-west, studied dance, voice and drama at Northwestern University, but was too impatient to work profession- ally to wait for her degree. Because she won a series of dance scholarships in Chicago, she became a solo dancer with the Chicago Opera ballet, also played feminine leads in a dozen summer musicals. Her first Broadway appearance was in “New Faces of 1952,” and she also played in the film version of this revue. She has had roles in “Me and Juliet,” “Plain and Fancy,” “Shangri-La,” and was Liat in the City Center production of “South Pacific.” Prior to entering “West Side Story,” she scored a personal hit in “Ziegfeld Follies,” and has also done her stint on TV. Wiley Hitchcock Institute for Studies in American Music Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn College of the City University of New York Volume XLVIII, Issue 1 Fall 2018 Genre and Stylistic Expectations in the Musical Theater of Leonard Bernstein Paul Laird, The University of Kansas As a composer, Leonard Bernstein never felt constrained by expectations of genre. One of the few American composers to make meaningful contributions both in concert music and the Broadway theater, he forged his own path in terms of what type of composition he should write. Of Bernstein’s three symphonies, each was programmatic and also unusual in form and conception. The first, “Jeremiah” (1942), told the story of the ancient Hebrew prophet’s warnings about Israelites turning away from God, capped by a finale with a solo mezzo-soprano mournfully singing Jeremiah’s Lamentations. Symphony No. 2, “The Age of Anxiety” (1949), inspired by W. H. Gottlieb The Yakima Symphony Orchestra’s year-long journey through The World and GUEST ARTIST SPONSOR – HomeStreet Bank of Shakespeare will come to an end on May 14th with “From Romeo and Juliet present to West Side Story,” the final offering on our Classical Series. The first half of the program will feature highlights from Hector Berlioz’s epic masterpiece Romeo and Juliet. The story of Berlioz’s fixation with and eventual marriage What a to Harriet Smithson is well documented and known to the world mostly Wonderful World through the composer’s Symphonie fantastique. However, it all started when the young composer went to see a production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Saturday, April 23, 2016 • 7:30pm Juliet starring Ms. Smithson. It was that performance that sparked Berlioz’s Capitol Theatre lifelong fascination with both the actress and the playwright. The symphony- Lawrence Golan, conductor cantata Romeo and Juliet is the outcome of that fascination. We will be Byron Stripling, trumpet and vocals performing three selections: “Romeo Alone & Festivities at the Capulets,” the A thrilling tribute to Louis Armstrong “Love Scene,” and, along with the Yakima Symphony Chorus, “Juliet’s Funeral and New Orleans Jazz Procession.” The second half of the program will focus on highlights from the modern adaptation of the Romeo and Juliet story by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen THE YAKIMA VALLEY CLASSICAL SERIES Sondheim.
