There wasn't much between Binocular and Rock On Ruby (Overturn well held in third) in the Christmas Hurdle at Kempton but the 2010 hero has since impressed in the Kingwell at Wincanton and he's the one capable of giving favourite-backers a fright if building on that first public outing since having a minor wind operation. Last year's Triumph winner Zarkandar still has a good deal of improvement to find judged on his Betfair Hurdle performance but the manner of that success suggested he'd come on appreciably for the outing and Paul Nicholls' unbeaten five-year-old certainly has the battling qualities to make his presence felt at championship level. Top Tip: HURRICANE FLY Watch out for: BINOCULAR.

  • Bulletin Book Extracts
Bulletin Book Extracts Continuity with the Dark Horses Annual … In my Dark Horses Guide I made out a case for Nichols Canyon, now the winner of seven of his 10 starts over hurdles. A genuine and classy performer for John Gosden on the Flat, with two Listed victories and a Group 3 placing to his name, he landed four Grade 1 races as a novice last season without getting the credit he deserved. This season he became the first horse to beat Faugheen, where the close proximity of Wicklow Brave in third suggests the favourite underperformed, before winning his sixth Grade 1 race when beating Identity Thief in the Ryanair Hurdle at Leopardstown over Christmas. Nichols Canyon ran the worst race of his career just under a month later when he trailed home 28 lengths third to Faugheen and Arctic Fire in the Irish Champion Hurdle, possibly feeling the effects of his tussle with Identity Thief in the heavy ground. Nichols Canyon’s greatest asset is his tenacity. He is not the sort of horse ever to win on the bridle, but he handles any ground and has strong winning form over two and a half miles – always an asset in the Champion Hurdle. Willie Mullins says the horse reminds him of Hurricane Fly – a great compliment - and there is a case for saying he has the best overall form in the race, even though the ratings suggest otherwise. Strong Opinions … I have no doubt that My Tent Or Yours is one of the most talented horses Nicky Henderson has ever trained.

Gold Cup Preview GOLD CUP PREVIEW Plenty of comparisons have already been made between Arkle and Best Mate, and they’re bound to become even more popular should the best staying chaser of the present day complete a hat-trick of Cheltenham Gold Cup victories in mid-March. Just for the record, the following paragraph from Chasers & Hurdlers 2002/3 may help to put into perspective just how good Arkle really was:- ‘In the 1965/6 season, Arkle ran four times before his third Cheltenham Gold Cup victory, starting off with a twenty-length win under 12-7 in the Gallaher Gold Cup at Sandown in November, setting a time record which still stands for the course and distance. Later that month, Arkle took his second successive Hennessy under 12-7, winning by fifteen lengths from Freddie who received 32 lb. Arkle made it three wins from three starts with victory by a distance in the King George VI Chase before again winning the Leopardstown Chase on his way to Cheltenham. Arkle conceded 42 lb to the second and third at Leopardstown; runner-up Height o’ Fashion, who went down by a neck, did most of her racing in Ireland but was worth a Timeform rating of 168+ whilst third-placed Splash, beaten a further fifteen lengths, had won the previous year’s Irish Grand National and earnt a Timeform rating of 157. Arkle gave them a 43 lb and 55 lb beating respectively and was 10/1-on when making it five out of five for the season when taking Best Mate jumps the second last in splendid isolation twelve month ago 1 Cheltenham Festival Issue the Gold Cup in a canter.

WEDNESDAY, 16 MARCH 2016 PRICE PAIR FARE WELL AT SLIPPER DRAW THE POWER AND Trainer Mick Price enjoyed vastly reversed fortunes at Tuesday’s barrier draw for the A$3.5 million G1 Golden Slipper THE GLORY from what he had experienced two weeks ago prior to the G1 Blue Diamond S., when his star juveniles Extreme Choice (Aus) (Not A Single Doubt {Aus}) and Flying Artie (Aus) (Artie Schiller) landed gates 13 and 17, respectively. Not that that stopped them from posting the quinella in the million-dollar contest. Price, however, can sleep much easier in the final days leading up to Saturday’s Golden Slipper after the colts drew barriers seven and five, respectively. Flying Artie shortened into a firm 5-1 second choice behind the 2-1 Extreme Choice after the draw, and Price told Racing.com Flying Artie’s favourable position could allow for a positive change in tactics following wide barriers his last two starts. “The only reason we have had to half strangle him [back] was because of bad gates--16 out of 16 and 15 out of 15 at Caulfield,” Price told the site.
