MARK STRATTON Head Coach After an opening act that was nearly impossible to duplicate, Drury baseball coach Mark Stratton guided the Panthers to a second straight winning campaign in 2008, making it two-for-two since DU revived its baseball program after a 33-year absence. Stratton’s Panthers completed last spring with a 27-22 overall mark and just missed a second straight berth in the six-team field for the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament with a 15-14 league mark. That makes Stratton 60-46 overall (.566 winning percentage) in two seasons after building an NCAA Division II program from scratch and constructing one of the great start-up stories in the sport’s history. In 2007, his first season as the Panthers head baseball coach and Drury’s first intercollegiate season since 1974, Stratton led the Panthers to a33-24 overall record and a Great Lakes Valley Conference post-season tournament championship. The Panthers advanced to the NCAA Division II North Central Regional, where sixth-seeded Drury posted a 2-2 mark before being eliminated as one of the final 24 teams still playing in the country despite featuring a squad with just two seniors. Stratton is a 1977 graduate of Southwest Missouri State University who received his masters from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1981. He began his coaching career as an assistant to Don Provance at Glendale in 1982, and held that position until he replaced the retiring Provance in 1993. In 13 seasons as the Glendale High School Falcons’ head coach, Stratton’s teams amassed a record of 244-154 and won four district and three Ozark Conference titles. In all, he sent 30 Falcons on to college scholarships. Stratton also coached the Glendale Merchants squad from 1988-2002, compiling a 421-243 mark and winning a state championship in 1997. Stratton and wife Gay have been married for 34 years and have four children – sons Brian, Kevin and Chip and daughter Sara, who played four seasons for the vaunted Drury Lady Panthers’ women’s basketball program.

He was 223-94 at Hillcrest, which included seven Ozark Conference championships and four district titles, and 348-94 at Licking, where his Wildcats captured 13 district titles and two state championships. Hagler and Stratton formed a coaching bond by squaring off for 11 seasons when the latter was at Glendale High School before retiring from that post last fall to prepare for Drury’s first intercollegiate baseball team since the early 1970s. Hagler, who has worked with several prep who went on to the pro ranks - former Licking standout Tony Floyd and former Hillcrest star Jon Barratt, among others - said focusing entirely on pitching will not be a tremendous change to his approach over his prep career.

Nasby, who serves as head coach of the new Drury junior varsity baseball program as well, is a 2005 graduate of Missouri State University, where he obtained a Marketing degree and earned a baseball letter in all four seasons for coach Keith Guttin’s Bears. 2009 SEASON PREVIEW Panthers Gunning For Return To GLVC, NCAA Tourneys

When the Drury Panthers resurrected their baseball program in 2007 after more than three decades of inactivity, no one knew for sure what to expect. Two years later, and with finishes of 33-24 and 27-22, respectively, in the books, the expectations of coach Mark Stratton’s third-year Panthers are crystal clear – to compete for a Great Lakes Valley Conference championship, earn an NCAA Tournament appearance and see what happens from there. The Panthers, of course, got a taste of it in that inaugural ’07 season, when Stratton’s squad fashioned one of the most remarkable start-up efforts in college baseball history by winning the GLVC title – despite being picked for 14th (last) in the league’s preseason poll – and advancing to the D-II Great Lakes Regional in Akron, Ohio, where Drury continued to make noise by winning a pair of games as the No. 6 seed in a six-team regional. Many of those key performers back then were freshmen. Now, they are juniors who crave the opportunity to get back in the limelight after narrowly missing another GLVC tourney trip last year with their 27-22 overall finish that included seven one-run losses and a 15-14 mark in the league that left them the seventh-place team in a format where the league’s top six squads earn post-season invites. They will get the 2009 season started this weekend, visiting Alabama- Huntsville for a pair of double-headers on Saturday and Sunday to kick off the campaign. of returnees is headed by junior shortstop Joe Rohlfing, the Harrison Waters league’s Freshman of the Year in ’07 and a Third Team All-GLVC choice last season, when he .372 with 39 runs, 32 RBIs and 12 stolen bases, and junior first baseman Tyler Goss, who earned Second Team All-GLVC honors a year ago after batting .374 with seven homers and 29 runs batted in with a .659 , his blasts trailing only the nine by graduated all-league senior second baseman Justin Skinner for the team lead. That Rohlfing-Goss duo is expected to anchor the DU offensive attack again this season, along with sophomore catcher/outfielder R.J. Knese, one of the top freshmen in the league – and a Third Team All-GLVC selection – after batting .369 with 33 runs and 31 RBIs in his rookie campaign, and junior centerfielder Harrison Waters, who hit .324 with five homers and 29 driven in. Also returning is junior outfielder/designated hitter Jason Hall, who led the Panthers with his .393 average. Junior catcher Tyler Wright (.267, 17 RBIs) returns for his third season behind the dish, where he’ll split time with Knese, with added depth coming from sophomore transfer Courtney Spitz. Returnees expected to play a more expanded role this season are junior outfielder Dane Hughes (.333, 12 RBIs, 8 stolen bases) and sophomore third baseman Joel Potts (.313, 11 RBIs), with utility help coming from junior second baseman Bret Gallion, among others. Newcomers expected to make an impact to the daily lineup include junior outfielder Kendall Findley and freshman second baseman Maury Wilmes. The speedy Findley is a former Mansfield High School standout who spent the past two seasons at Jefferson College, while Wilmes was a prep star for St. Dominic High School, helping the St. Louis-area school to a 26-3 record and state championship at Meador Park last spring. Freshman Derek Harwell, a former Ozark High School standout, adds depth at designated hitter and at the corners. R.J. Knese While the everyday lineup features a solid mix of veterans and youthful newcomers, the pitching staff will rely heavily on a pair of 29 Drury Panther Baseball 2009

new faces at the top. Senior right-hander Zane Montgomery, who sat out last season after transferring to Drury from Southwest Baptist, and freshman lefty Chris Barratt are two of the arms expected to get the call for weekend GLVC battles this spring for the Panthers and pitching coach Byron Hagler. Montgomery was a First Team All-MIAA choice as a sophomore for SBU, when he went 12-2 with nine complete games, while Barratt shone for Springfield’s Hillcrest High School, finishing with a 24-6 career record, setting a school mark for career strikeouts (331) and posting a 0.76 ERA as a senior for the Hornets. That duo will join veterans Blake Wixson (2-0, 2.79 ERA), a junior right-hander, the lefty Waters (3-4, 4.37 ERA) and junior right-hander Chris Marston, who earned Third Team All-GLVC recognition after going 4-0 with a 4.31 ERA but is still recovering from off-season elbow surgery. Junior right-hander Carl Teghtmyer, a submariner who worked mostly in middle relief last season and compiled a 5.84 ERA, will get opportunities as a starter, while the Panthers are hoping junior right-hander Blair Ellington – a key performer two years ago in DU’s post-season run – can return to form after missing last season with a injury. Drury has additional help in the pen from junior right- handers Sam Pirtle, Steven Bloss (tied for team lead with five wins) and Beau Beattie as well as sophomore righty Evan Jones (1.84 ERA) and sophomore lefty Corey Peterson. Junior newcomer Aaron Quick will also figure into the mix, as could Tyler Goss redshirt freshman right-hander Josh Hall, who missed last season with a shoulder injury. Pirtle was 1-2 with a team-leading 1.67 ERA and seven saves in 24 appearances last season and is expected to share duties initially with Tim Payne, a 6-5 junior left-hander who transferred to Drury at the semester from Central Arkansas, but last played for Longview Community College, which he helped to a national runner-up finish in 2008. The Panthers have developed precious depth for this season with the addition of a junior varsity program in the fall, with several freshmen and junior college transfers now vying to play their way onto the active roster of 24 that will dress for road trips this spring for the Panthers. Drury once again will play one of the league’s PRESEASON POLL best non-conference schedules, with no fewer than 18 Team (First-place votes) Total Points games against teams ranked in Collegiate Baseball’s East preseason Top 40 dotting the ’09 slate. That includes Northern Kentucky (4) 34 road trips to Top 10 teams Southern Arkansas and Bellarmine (1) 30 Ouachita Baptist and a pair of games with preseason Saint Joseph’s (2) 27 No. 3 Central Missouri, including a mid-April rematch Indianapolis 23 of their contest last season at Hammons Field, home of Lewis 15 the Double-A . Kentucky Wesleyan 11 The Panthers are picked for second in the GLVC UW-Parkside 7 West preseason poll behind perennial favorite Southern Indiana, a D-II World Series participant in ’07. Northern West Kentucky is the favorite in the East, just ahead of Southern Indiana (5) 25 Bellarmine. Drury will play USI and Bellarmine on the Drury (1) 21 road this season, but will host NKU. 2008 Seniors: (l to r) Mike Tettamble, Justin Skinner, Ricky Meinhold and Blake Evans 2008 SEASON IN REVIEW Panthers Fall Just Short of Return Trip to GLVC Meet

Drury followed up its storybook 2007 inaugural season with nearly a repeat a year later, falling just short of qualifying for a chance to defend their Great Lakes Valley Conference championship by participating in the league’s post-season tournament. Coach Mark Stratton’s Panthers posted a final 27-22 overall mark that included a 15-14 record in GLVC play, good for third place in the GLVC West – but one spot shy of making the six-team field for the league’s postseason tournament. The Panthers made a charge at the end, putting together a seven-game winning streak and claiming 9 of 11 in one April stretch, before coming up short in a pivotal four-game set with West champion Southern Indiana, dropping three close games to the Screaming Eagles. Drury’s second season as an NCAA-II member was highlighted by the likes of an 8-5 triumph over perennial national power Central Missouri in the Panthers’ first-ever game at Hammons Field, a four-game sweep of West rival Rockhurst in Kansas City, a sweep of league foe Quincy at Meador Park and one eventful afternoon at Meador in which DU put up 29 runs on 24 hits in a 29-4 thrashing of Southwest Baptist. The season also meant the end of the line for four key seniors for the Panthers – second baseman/pitcher Justin Skinner, pitchers Ricky Meinhold and Blake Evans and first baseman Mike Tettamble. All four were integral parts of the start-up Drury program in ’07 that won the GLVC title and advanced to the NCAA-II Regional in Akron, Ohio, and all were pivotal in helping cement Drury Baseball as one of the top teams in the Midwest even at such an early stage of the program’s development.

As the first institution of higher education in south- western Missouri, Drury holds a unique place in the Springfield community. Beginning with its founding in 1873 by a group of Congregationalists, Drury has welcomed a diverse student body, offering unusual opportunity for its time to women and American Indians. MEADOR PARK AND THE DRURY BASEBALL FACILITIES

Without question, that mission was in part accom- plished by a late-season stamp of approval from the Missouri State High School Activities Association. Needing a place to host its state baseball champion- ships in a pinch with the University of Missouri’s field in Columbia in use for an NCAA Regional in June of 2007, MSHSAA turned its attention to Springfield and Meador Park. Despite a brief tussle with heavy rains, and thanks to the immaculate work of the Drury coaching staff/ grounds crew, the state championships went on with- out a hitch – so much so, that MSHSAA recently an- nounced a new four-year agreement to continue to play the state’s pinnacle prep events at Drury’s home ballpark. The dimensions of Meador remain the same – ap- proximately 350 feet down the lines, 365 feet in the he Drury baseball program has benefited power alleys and 380 to dead center – but the list greatly in their startup program from the help of improvements is numerous. Built in 1964, what was once the home of the On campus, Stratton and his staff – again with the help of several local donors – have turned what once was the Tindle Mills farm supply building on the southeast edge of campus into an indoor train- ing facility complete with a synthetic rubber floor in the 6,400-square foot training, weights and locker area, an artificial turf surface in the 7,500 square foot practice area, locker rooms and offices for both the baseball and DU softball programs, three batting cages, three pro pitching mounds and approximately $40,000 worth of weights and training equipment. Altogether, the facilities are viewed as a key com- ponent in the building of a winning tradition with of Drury baseball.

NCAA Division I Missouri State Bears has sat rela- tively dormant in the 21st century, but has undergone an extreme makeover in becoming the new park for the new DU baseball program. “Meador Park used to be the jewel for people to play on,” said Stratton, who played on the field as a Hillcrest High School Hornet in the early 1970s and coached there while at Glendale for nearly 20 years afterward. “We’re in the process of getting it back to that sta- tus, and we’ve already come a long way.” 39 Drury Panther Baseball 2009
