8 PURCHASING WHOLESALE TICKETS Wholesale tickets are purchased through a password-protected portal on the Ticketek website. To obtain a password, please contact [email protected].

1. Once you have received your password, visit http://premier.ticketek.com.au/TomRoberts

2. On the TICKETS tab select the customer’s desired date from the calendar.

3. Enter your password (obtained from the NGA) in the box provided to access the wholesale discount.

Tom Roberts Facts:

• Tom Roberts was born on 9 March 1856 in Dorchester, Dorset, England.

• In 1869 he immigrated to Melbourne with his widowed mother, brother and sister when he was thirteen years old, shortly after the death of his father.

• He worked for photographers while studying fine art in Melbourne and in 1881-85 he attended London’s Royal Academy Schools and travelled through Spain, Italy and France.

• Tom Roberts was one of the founders of Australian , sometimes known as the .

• Roberts is most famous for his large and deliberately nationalistic pre-Federation subject pictures including Shearing the rams (1888-90), The Golden Fleece (1894), A break away! (1891) and the bushranging subject Bailed up (1895).

• Tom Roberts’ largest work, known as The Big Picture is his historic Federation commission, Opening of the First Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia by H.R.H The Duke of Cornwall and York, May 9, 1901, 1901-03 has 265 recognisable portraits within it, including his friend Frederick McCubbin.

• The Big Picture was so large that it was painted on three separate pieces of canvas, stitched together. This is the first time the painting is being moved since it was installed at Parliament House in 1988.

• The seminal ‘9 by 5 Impression Exhibition’ of 1889 was Tom Roberts’s idea. The title referred to the size of the works exhibited, many were painted on cigar box lids measuring nine by five inches (23 x 12.5 cm).

• Roberts was given the nickname ‘Bulldog’ by his brother and it was used by his close friends and colleagues throughout his life.

• Robert’s tended to work thematically and to plan a series of pictures on the same subject or mood.

• 133 works in the exhibition; including 53 portraits and 53 landscapes, and also his famous national narratives, still-lifes, nudes and figures in landscape; covering all the media which he worked in; paintings, pastels, drawing, prints and sculpture.

• Shearing the rams attracted more press coverage at the time than any other Australian painting.

• A coach driver called ‘Silent’ Bob Bates who modelled for Roberts in Bailed up, had been held up by the Captain Thunderbolt in the 1860s.

• Arthur Boyd: ‘All Australian paintings are in some way a homage to Tom Roberts’

: ‘[Roberts] was … the first to discover and paint the beauty of our gum trees and the refined flesh-like colour of their saplings in the forest.’

• 9 March 1856 born in Dorchester, England

• 1869 emigrated from England to Melbourne

• 1871 started formal training at East Collingwood Artisans’ School of Design

• 1871–74 worked as a photographer’s assistant in Melbourne and started evening classes at the National Gallery’s School in 1874

• 1877– 79 studied of Painting under Eugene von Guérard

• 1881–85 studied at Royal Academy Schools, London

• 1885 returned to Australia

• 1885–87 established artist camps at Box Hill, Melbourne, with friends Frederick McCubbin and Louis Abrahams and later at Mentone and Beaumauris where he met Arthur Streeton.

• 1889 exhibited sixty-two works in the ‘9 by 5 Impression Exhibition’, Melbourne

• 1896 married Elizabeth ‘Lillie’ Williamson, his only child Caleb Roberts was born in 1898.

• 1901 attended the opening of the first Federal Parliament at the Exhibition Building, Melbourne. Commissioned to paint the event, which he called The Big Picture as a gift for the Royal Family

• 1915–16 worked as an orderly at the 3rd London General Hospital during the First World War

• 1928 his wife Lillie Roberts dies

• 1928 married Jean Boyes

• 1931 dies and is buried in Tasmania

Will tickets be available on the day? Yes. Tickets will be sold at the Gallery during the exhibition for any dates that have tickets available.

Will the exhibition travel to galleries in Sydney or Melbourne? The Tom Roberts exhibition will show at the NGA in Canberra only.
